  1. Thanks for the advice guys. Do you think it would be necessary for me to look into MA programs in order to place decently? Do you have any information about that?
  2. I have posted a couple times during slow days on the forum but never got any interest, thought I would try one more time. Hello everyone, I'm hoping to get some insight on how I can improve my profile for PhD admissions next cycle and what range of schools would be realistic for me, I'm currently thinking 25-45 with several applications both over and under added in. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. I'm not one to really talk too much about myself so if you need any more information please just ask and I will provide it! PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 50 USNWR Undergrad, Unranked Econ Program Undergrad GPA: 3.76 GRE: Haven't taken it yet Math Courses: Calc I/II/III(CR, CR, B+), Discrete Math (A), Linear Algebra(B+), Real Analysis (A-) Econ Courses: Intro to Macro/Micro (A/A), Intermediate Macro/Micro (A/A), Econ Stats (B+), Econometrics (A), Game Theory (A), Environmental Econ (A-), Mathematical Topics in Economics (A), History of Finance (A), Honors Thesis (A) Other Courses: A few finance classes Letters of Recommendation: 1 from Yale Econ PhD on my thesis committee. One from U Chicago PhD, my thesis adviser. One from WVU PhD, knows me well and have taken a few classes with her. Research Experience: Honors thesis and one year RA at the Antitrust Division. Teaching Experience: TA for Intro to Macro Research Interests: Applied Micro, IO, Experimental, Behavioral SOP: Haven't written it yet, assume i will tailor it for each school Concerns: Few math classes with mediocre grades Other: Do you have any suggestions on how I can improve my profile? My current plan is to take DIffeqs and Probability Theory at a local university, and hopefully perform well in them, between now and when I apply. All my math grades were basically squeezed into my last semester of college after learning of the rigorous math training needed to succeed in a PhD program. In retrospect I should have taken them at a slower pace post-bacc, but what is done is done. I don't know what sort of extra info I should give so if you have any questions that can help you give more informed advice let me know. Applying to: Not sure. Between ranks 25-45? Also looking for information on MA programs in North America. THANKS!
  3. I posted once before but did not get any interest in my post. Since there has been a decent amount of activity on the forum today I figured I would give it one more shot. 4. Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I do not know if that option is feasible, as I live halfway across the United States from where my letter writers are. Does anyone have any other suggestions perhaps? I really appreciate the advice.
  5. Hello. Looking for a bit of advice about taking supplemental math. Unfortunately I got into the game pretty late (like many others) and was only able to start taking the math I would need for admissions during my last year of college. Getting back into the "language" of mathematics was fun for me, but also a very quick change of pace. As of now, I have completed the calc sequence, linear algebra, and real analysis. While I am satisfied that I was able to take what seems like the most "essential" courses for admissions, I would like to take a few more classes, both to increase the quantity of math courses on my resume, and to (presumably) show that some of my mediocre performance in the math classes I have already taken (you can find my profile here http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/153360-profile-evaluation-next-cycle.html) was more due to the quick return to maths after a long break and squeezing three classes into a single semester. While I would love to take some maths at a local university they present some problems. A. The university I can get in state tuition to (University of MD) holds NO night math classes (I work a full time job from 9-6 M-F). B. The other universities around me (DC schools) are just too expensive to take a class ~$3.6k per class. I would like to know what you believe would be a better option. To take some night maths at a CC or to take some online math through one of the programs offered from a few nice universities (I have seen online programs for Stanford and U Illinois I believe). The classes I am looking to take are DiffEQ, probability theory, and maybe 1 more elective. I know that DiffEQ is offered through CC and Prob Theory is offered online through U Illinois. Does anyone have any input on this situation? Is it even worthwhile to do this in the eyes of admin officers, or will CC classes and Online Courses be so heavily discounted that I would be a waste of my time? Thanks!
  6. I was also thinking about MA programs if anyone could comment on that?
