  1. Institution: UCSD Program: Economics PhD Decision: Waitlisted Funding: N/A Notification Date: 3/23/15 Notified Through: Email Posted on GC: No Comments:
  2. UCSD seems to be out on GC, but nothing for me yet. Anyone else still waiting?
  3. You can rent a decent place for ~ $600. There are a lot of places to eat out, if you eat out every day, it'll be expensive, but if you cook, it's affordable. I don't know how much funding you have at Brown but none of the grad students I met complained about that. Are you visiting?
  4. Most do. I might be wrong but my boyfriend said almost all students in last year's cohort passed (he's an undergrad taking grad class with grad students).
  5. I don't know about the other 2 schools, but I did quite a bit of research on Brown, and my boyfriend goes to Brown. They have many great Development professors. The class size is around 13 students each year, very friendly and not terribly competitive. Providence is a great place to live in too. I'd probably go to Brown.
  6. Thanks for the placement records ExclamationMarx! I'm not so well-versed in placement analysis, but it seems to me based on this that NYU placement is better than Columbia. Hmm something to think about. I'm also worried about training/ faculty advising in general. I know both schools have stars in Development Economics, but I doubt they have much time for students. Does anyone know how supportive the professors are, especially for first-year students?
  7. Hi there! So I have been really lucky to be admitted by both Columbia and NYU, and now I'm not sure how to choose between two good programs that I don't know much about. I'm really interested in Development Economics right now, though I think I want to explore Applied Microeconomics and Industrial Organization in the next few years. I talked to my professor, who commented that Columbia has SIPA which might be great for collaboration, but NYU is very strong in its own right and shouldn't be dismissed. Funding from both schools are similar for me, though NYU does not require me to TA/RA at all. How serious should I take this in consideration? I'll go visit both, but I want to start thinking about choosing the right school for myself. Can anyone comment on these two schools in terms of: - strong faculty in each school - placement: NYU doesn't have its placement records online I believe - department culture: how supportive are professors to first year students, how easy it is to start doing research or to work as an RA, is the atmosphere friendly competition or cutthroat, etc (I come from a school with a relatively small grad program and have been taking grad classes here, so I'm curious about how different it might be in a larger program) I would appreciate any input, thanks in advance! :)
  8. I applied to Brown too and haven't heard back from them. When did you get this email?

  10. Nothing new on Cornell's ApplyWeb for me either :(
  11. You're right, I was looking at the Master results. My bad. Hopefully they comeout soon!
  12. Last year NYU came out mid March, and those comments on NHL? I say they are fake.
  13. A few more Berkeley posts came out today on GC. I don't know what to make of it; has anyone actually heard from Berkeley?
  14. I'm still waiting for official results from 9 schools, but truthfully at this point I'm just really curious about Berkeley. Really hoping that they are not done sending out admittances yet; there are a few on Grad Cafe this weekend and I've heard nothing :(
  15. Just saw a post on grad cafe, is berkeley out as well?

  17. Another slow day for me. I really wish schools would just send out all results at once like Yale. Official rejections are painful butI won't think about them as much as the implicit ones.
  18. When did those Chicago offers start coming out? I'm starting to feel nervous!
  19. Institution: Northwestern Program: PhD economics Decision: rejected Funding: Notification date: 25 feb 2015 Notified through: email Posted on GC: Yes Comments: First thing to wake up to? Not cool.
  20. Teddyb & phd hopeful: I know a few years ago, someone from a top 15 US undergrad university with a profile that is competitive for Top 20, according to his professors, did not get in place he applied to, and he applied to over 20 schools ranging from top tier to safeties. He spent a year in a Master program and did part time RA, and got in 2 Top 20 schools the next year. His professors had no idea what happened during his first try; application process is messy and unpredictable. So my point is, there's probably little use to overanalyze what could have been done better. Stay positive, and keep on fighting!
  21. Does anyone know if Minnesota releases results in waves, or if all admits come out the same day?
  22. I saw it. Gave me a tiny bit of hope, though I really need that funding.
  23. Previous year records on Gradcafe show that decisions were rolled out over a few days, so I'm crossing my fingers still. I keep checking the website too, and nothing has changed. It is quite stressful :(.
