  1. I'm actually in neither, I'm in a terminal master's programs that has a long list of recent placements into excellent programs, including UW Madison and Duke actually. Others are Cornell, Brown, Indiana, Purdue, Vanderbilt, etc., in total 34 different programs were listed, most of which I believe were in the top 50 and many were in the top 30 or better. Thank you though, that's very reassuring. Given my lack of focus/ discipline as an undergrad, I'm adamant that I can at least come close to doing that well now I really know that this is what I want.
  2. Hi, I'm a recent graduate of a T50 (T20 public) university, majored in economics, minored in statistics. After a year of working and reflecting on what I want to do, I've decided to go back and pursue a masters with the goal of entering a PhD program in the fall of 2017. I'll be entering an MA program with a good history of placements into T50 PhD programs. Below are my undergrad stats, along with the courses I'll be taking as a masters student. Type of Undergrad: T20 Public University (Big Ten) Undergrad GPA: 3.57 Type of Grad: MA Economics, Eventual goal is PhD Grad GPA: Not entered yet GRE: 162V 167Q 4.0 AW Math Courses: Calc I (B+) Calc 2(B+) Calc 3(B) Differential Equations (B) Linear Algebra (B) Stats 1 (A) Stats 2(B+) Mathematical Statistics (B) Econometrics (A-) Applied Statistics (B-), Will be taking Real analysis next year Econ Courses (grad-level): Will take: Advanced Micro and Macro, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Time Series Analysis, International Monetary Policy, Real Analysis, Applied Econometric Methods, Summer Research Thesis, possibly another math course Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Micro (A), Macro(A), Int Micro (A-) Int Macro (A-), Industrial Org (A), International Econ (A-), Public Sector Econ (B), Utility Theory (B) Letters of Recommendation: Will ideally be from graduate instructors/thesis advisor/etc. Research Experience: Will be working as a research assistant during MA program Teaching Experience: Will be working as a teaching assistant during MA program Research Interests: Industrial Org, Econometrics, International Economics Concerns: Low math grades My worries are largely centered around my performance in mathematics as an undergraduate. I've confident, however, that I can and will put in the necessary effort to improve my performance as a masters student to prepare me for a PhD program. If, as a masters student, I were able to earn all A's/A-'s, where would I stand in terms of PhD potential? I'm trying to get a good feel for that as I move forward.
  3. Hi, I've recently earned my bachelor's degree in economics, and I'm interested in continuing on for an advanced degree. At this point in time, I'm looking at both terminal masters and phd programs. Here are my stats: Undergrad GPA: 3.57 (top 15 public university), major in economics (3.64 major GPA), minor in applied statistics GRE: 162 V, 167 Q I've taken calc I-III, differential equations, linear algebra, and calculus based statistics, as well as several other less math-intensive stats courses. However, I'm rather concerned with my chances at PhD programs since I earned either B's or B+'s in all of the math listed above. Another concern I'm lacking in research experience, outside of a couple term papers/projects that my recs can speak to. Here are the programs I'm looking at applying to/ have already applied to: PhD programs: University of Oregon, University of Houston, Syracuse University, University of Illinois-Chicago, Iowa State University MA Programs: UIUC, Wisconsin-Madison, University of Cincinnati Would you consider these programs to be within reach? I'd find any and all input to be very valuable.
