  1. I write from Italy. I work for Pirelli Real Estate and had an experience as entrepreneur in the construction sector. I got the first positive answer from USC and Columbia, and I am now waiting responses from NYU master program in real estate. After the master, I would like to start a career as developer on my own. I am looking for an advice based on your experience, since I have some trouble to choose among them. First of all, the city. I think L.A. is a completely different experience that NY. At the same time, as far as I read, real estate is a sector where relationships and network are very important, and it happens that you work in the same place where you have studied. Is NY city the only and best place where to go for real estate? Or also the market in California is very vibrant? think that all (or most) real estate operations in NY are finance/debt related, while In California there could be more development opportunities. At the same time, I would like to know if there are real differences among these programs. Since masters in real estate are not well advertised as MBA programs, statistics and information are not so complete, and I am not able to compare and distinguish between USC, NYU and Columbia programs. Is there a real difference among the 3 programs? Since I am interested in development, should I prefer Columbia or USC over NYU, more finance based? More generally, do you have some advice? thanks a lot in advance l
  2. Hi! i used to read this forum a lot while taking tests, today i came back for some suggestions and idea... well, i have been admitted to MS in Economics at NYU, september 2005 intake, obtained a deferral to 2006, but now i am reconsidering to apply for the NYU Master in Real Estate or Constuction Management....i have some experience both as entrepreneur in construction and real estate industry. I am not interested in mba, and i think the NYU ms in realestate in quite excellent!
  3. Hi all! in my admission letter they just say I have to send my deposit through a check or internationl money transfer. BUT the do not say anything about the bank-code or university account.... how should i send the money then? whit a pigeon?
  4. still deciding, really i don't know thnks a lot to all TM people, this is really a tremendous place
  5. my mother Just called me and read the letter no fellowship no idea how i am happy! the point is: now i have a job, some serious project, and i remember i can postpone my admission for 1 year...
  6. yes, u may ask! but since i dont want to be incorrect, i suggest u to check my post in the "just finished my gre" forum. but i think final Q = 740 but V was lower than first time i took the test
  7. thank u! since i think u are going to be in Palo Alto around end of August, plz convince them, i'll be there at most in 10 hours....
  8. No bothering at all. First, i dont give the GRE such a role in the application process: all my friends studying in top american schools says it's only a sort of threshold, u dont need to get 800 (and many stories on this forum tell about people rejected with 1600) but u need not to get a very low score. Moreover, they doubt some read the Verbal score. I decided to pursue postgraduate study last september, when my jub hunting didn't give any positive result. In october i ordered the books and started to do all the stuff for the application process (and on this perspective this forum in truly the best source) I gave my gre twice, since during the first test i was on excessive tension. It was a complete defeat. With PowerPrep I used to get Q>= 770 and V around 500 (I got 273@TOEFL) but the first official score was very far from these numbers. I posted all the info in the right discussion of this forum, u'll find all the details. I gave it a second time just before the deadline, and I got Q= 740 if memory doesnt fail, but V was really low. In 2002 I got a degree in Economics from a top italian university, summa cum laude, thesis on game theory about spectrum auction (my advisor got his phd in decision sciences from the same school @ stanford, and he was very sure about a positive result). I was also exchange student@ Erasmus university in Rotterdam (Netherland) for 6 months, where i mainly studied Financial mathematics. My GPA: we dont have such a scale, but I had 28,3 out of 30, and here it is not a low average, not at all. Last summer I also took a summer course @ LSE in london, in industrial organization and competition policy, since I spent 6 months as stagiaire at the European Commission (something not so easy to get) in the Information Society Directorate, dealing with public policy and regulation. At the same time, 2 years in a row I was admitted to participate at the seminar organized by the Italian Communication Authority (it's a sort of scolarship). Professional experiences: 1- during the university years i worked for a startup now leader in the online brokerage of mortgage in italy (this was the second LOR, the guy got an MBA from MIT) 2- after i got my degree, i had to come back home and take care of the family business for 1,5 years, i was entrepreneur in the bulding sector. My SOP were based on my desire to keep working in the regulation sector and public policy and my experience of European law making process. I was not able to obtain a third letter from the European Commission: their rule prevented my boss to write a letter for me after only 5 months i worked there. So, my background is: quite quantitative at univesity, sound understanding of technological issues (but with a business oriented perspective), specially wireless stuff. I applied to TPP @ MIT (i was also in contact with a TPP former student, who told me in advance it could not be the right program for me, since i had already knowledge of the law making process, while TPP is mainly targeted to engineers aiming to do Policy) and MS&E @ stanford, saying in the SOP i wanted to pursue the Policy Track. Second best (still waiting) are: NYU MS in Economics, and Oxford - Master in Financial economics. Since i dont want to think i have been rejected for the GRE score, I think the main reasons are: 1- no third letter (both schools wrote asking for the the third) 2- degree in economics for the MIT 3- years spent @ university: in italy i can stay many years as u want, u are not forced to finish within 4 years (the official lenght), and when i finish i was already 26,5 y.o. 4- Maybe excessive focus on public policy: although Stanford advertises this as likely job for MS&E graduated, i think is a little bit more targeted to people of OR or IE, and Public Policy is a "residual" track Now I have a good job in italy, nothing to do with what u read, but i would have loved to spend 2 years in a gorgeous campus...that was the main reason that drove me to apply: being in a vibrant place, where everything can happen. I know that I applied to the most prestigeous schools, but it is also true that in USA there are not so many master degree available if u don't want a PhD, only NYU. I could have chosen other Master programs in Europe, but i did not want to stay here anymore. I was loving the idea to leave this desk in July before reaching US....now the idea that i have to stay here longer than this summer drives me crazy...
  9. my sincerest congratulations as well! it is exactly the same program that wrote that kind email i posted some days ago...but with a different mood... i was really looking forward, it's a special program quite flexible and multidisciplinar... it was my first choice with TPP@MIT, but same answer from boston... i think they are mainly places for engineers, aiming to make some public policy (this is for mit, stanford offers very different tracks)...i applied with a degree in economics, and with only 2 letters instead of 3, but really i could not supply a third one... my sincere congrs again, i am sure u will have terrific time there in palo alto....
  10. i did not apply to so many programs (they are quite peculiar, it's not the usual master in "something" but quite flexible and interdisciplinary), 4 in total, and i doubt the next 2 will be different. I knew i had really few chances, but hope doesnt like to die...
  11. Program: Master in Management Science and Engineering. second reject two days in a row. Obviously I had anticipated in some way these results, but at the same time i think i'm going to kill myself --------- Your application for admission to the Master of Science Program in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University has been reviewed by the Faculty Committee on Admissions. I regret to inform you that the committee did not approve you for admission. The number of applicants to Stanford far exceeds the number of those whom we can admit. Each year, many strong candidates must be turned down. We hope you are not discouraged by this decision, and we fully anticipate that you will find another graduate program that can meet your educational needs. Thank you for applying to our program. Sincerely,
  12. forgot to mention it was a Master Program in Technology and Policy (TPP)
  13. Just arrived my email... --- Hi , Our admissions committee has carefully reviewed your application for admission. We regret that we are unable to offer you a place in our program for September 2005. Competition for admission is always very keen and we cannot admit all of the applicants who have the qualifications and ability to pursue graduate study at MIT. We wish you the best in your academic career and beyond. Sincerely, --- Hi Lorenzo I am sorry to inform you that we are not offering you admission to MIT in the Engineering Systems Division. You should receive your letter about the decision soon. I wish you well in your future studies. Best regards,
