PROFILE International applicant:
Type of Undergrad: Business Administration (with some focus in Economics), Top 5 university in Italy
Undergrad GPA: 3.24, econ (3.54)
Type of Grad: Economics, two year master, small but reputable Swedish university with international accreditations, even though probably unknown in the US. Exchange semester in top 10 European university, even though grades won't be available before the application deadline.
Grad GPA: 3.54 econ (3.72)
GRE: 167Q, 155V, 4.5 AWA
TOEFL: taking it soon; high result expected (I have an expired score of 107; I will probably score better this time).
Math Courses: Undergraduate Mathematics (B+), Undergraduate Statistics (B), Graduate Mathematics (A)
Econ Courses (grad-level): Advanced Macro (A), Advanced International Macro (A), Micro (A), Econometrics (B+), International Trade (B), Geographical Economics (A), Globalization of Economic Activity [presented as Business Administration in the Program syllabus] ©
Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Macro (B+), Econometrics (B+), Micro (B), Industrial Organization (A), International Economics (A),
Other Courses: Generally high grades in Finance. Lower in Business administration, Law and others.
Letters of Recommendation: 2 professors who know me from top 10 US universities, probably very positive. I could possibly get less strong ones from good professors.
Research Experience: None. I have been offered a position as RA from my university, but had to decline as I was about to start the semester abroad. Blogger for a think tank which could potentially publish research.
Teaching Experience: Private tutoring in Corporate Finance for a brief period (should I mention it on the CV or just in the SOP?)
Research Interests: Monetary, Financial Macro, Central Banking, Free Banking, relation between financial development and economic growth, Austrian Economics.
SOP: Not written yet, but I think I can write a good one.
Concerns: Low GPA undergrad (mostly driven down by BA courses); Not too good graduate GPA (even though A is the median grade, the GPA is considerably decreased by a BA course); no experience as RA or TA; Math exams were quite comprehensive, but someone who doesn't go to look at the syllabus wouldn't know it. Do graduate courses in Economics show my math skills?; Funding needed.
Other: Do you suggest applying this year or wait 1 year considering that I will have written a master thesis, probably done some reaserch assistantship in research centers in the summer, and I am granted admission for a 1 year advanced master in Economics at a top 15 European university (I wouldn't like to do a PhD there, but a master is fine)?
As I mentioned before, I am an exchange student at a top 10 European university, even though grades won't be available until after the deadline foor most PhD applications. Will it be taken into account?
Applying to: GMU (with Mercatus Center Fellowship), Clemson, Missouri, Texas Tech, Virginia, Connecticut, other suggestions? In general, can I aspire to range top 30-50?
