  1. 30% of Total use both credit card and cheque book 40% of those who use credit card do not use cheque book so, 60% of those who use credit card use both credit card and cheque book or, 60% of those who use credit card = 30% of Total so, 40% of those who use credit card = 20% of Total so, 100% of those who use credit card = 50% of Total
  2. The smallest distance between (0,0) and the point of interception would be a perpendicular line. So the area of the 2 rt angled triangles would be equal. If the smallest distance is X then X*125 = 75*100 so, X = 60
  3. Q6: B) hour, is orbiting the Sun once a year on an elliptical path that regularly brings it The above answer is correct because of 1) parallel construction ( traveling, orbiting) 2) modifier(orbiting the Sun) not misplaced as in option A (on an elliptical path that orbits the Sun) Q7: options B, D and E are not correct because they are not parallel (grows more complex - present indefinite) option B (issues became - past indefinite) option D (by experts became - past indefinite) option E (experts has become - present perfect) option A not correct because 'need' is followed by 'for'
  4. Option A : The (subject) has bad habits , but the (subject) can break bad habits if blah blah blah... Option B: The (subject) has bad habits , but the bad habits can be broken by the (subject) if blah blah blah... Option A is the better choice.
  5. The answer to this question lies in understanding what was/were 'fortunately were never used' A: 'shelters costing thousands of dollars but fortunately were...' ,what was not used dollars or shelters B: the second 'that' is awkward and the sentence is verbose C: 'bomb shelters that fortunately were...' CORRECT as this option clearly tells that 'shelters' were 'fortunately not used' D: awkward sentence, obviously incorrect E: 'the building of bomb shelters by families that cost thousands ' , who cost thousand dollars, bomb shelters or families . This question is an example of 'misplaced modifier'.
  6. In my opinion the powerprep tests taken not before 1 week of the actual GMAT reflect the score on the GMAT to a good extent. I scored 710 1 day before the actual test .In the actual test I scored 720.
  7. Hi , 620(M 49 , V25) clearly shows that there is no problem in Quant .The problem is in verbal and if you get something around 40-41 in verbal you'll cross 700. In my opinion finishing with the Official Guide , especially the SC and CR section, will add a lot of value. For SC the book Better English by Norman Lewis is very useful. Thanks Alok
  8. 1)For improving sentence correction I read 'Better English' by Norman Lewis2)The error types given in Kaplan 800 are very near to the error the types you see on the actual GMAT
  9. This is a question testing parallel construction The sentence is of the format : Migraine(subject) ....... 'as infrequently as' X or 'as often as' Y Only option B follows this format. 'like' is used to compare two nouns
  10. I did not take Arco CAT test but took paper based test in the Arco book My scores were 640 650 700 670 720 and 740 My GMAT score is 720
  11. In my opinion CAT is an extremely tough test as compared to GMAT because of 2 reasons 1) The quant syllabus is more vast and the difficulty level of the questions is very high. Also very tricky questions appear in Data Interpretation. 2) In verbal there is no fixed format , there can be questions from syllogism , passages can be extremely convoluted and questions from sentence arrangement can take a lot of time. In GMAT on the other hand it is known that verbal = CR+RC+SC and the questions do not vary much. I had taken the CAT in 2000 and got one interview call from IIML which I could not clear . The CAT is indispensible for the IIMs because for an Indian B School where most of the applicants are freshers the selection criteria can be vaguely summarised as SELECTION = CAT (60%) + WORK EX(15%) + ACADEMIC BACKGROUND (10%) + GD&PI (10%) + EXTRA CURRICULAR (5%) On the other hand in US B Schools where majority of applicants have work experience the selection criteria can be formulised as SELECTION = GMAT (25%) + ESSAYS(25%) + RECO LETTERS (15%) + ACADEMIC BACKGROUND ( 10%) + WORK EX(20%) + EXTRA CURRICULAR (10%) + PI (5%) My experience : Scoring in the 95+ percentile in GMAT is far easier than getting an interview call from an IIM .This doesnt mean that schools accepting GMAT scores are not good , it only means that there can be no comparison and the selection formulae mentioned above clearly explain this. Thanks and Regards Alok
  12. Thanks . Preparation Strategy 1: Solved every question in OG 2: Reviewed the questions for which the answer was wrong. 3: Picked one area where I anticipated the highest possible improvement and worked on it. The area was sentence correction and I improved from 75% correct to 95% correct. 4: Critical Reasoning Strategy: Read the question stem and without reading the question prepare answers for the following 4 questions in your mind a)assumption b)weaken the argument c)strengthen the argument d)similar logic Read the question which would be one from the above 4 and select the option which is closest to the answer.Follow this strategy while doing practice question ONLY .By the time you appear for the GMAT the time you take for the above mentioned process should be minimal. 5:Reading Comprehension:I am not particularly good at RC and till the GMAT day my strike rate was only 75%. 6: Quantitative : Did not put it much effort in this area 7: Data Interpretation : The last 75 questions in [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] are very important .Solving them will give a real accurate idea of the level of DI questions in GMAT Material Used OG Kaplan 2005 Kaplan 800 Better English by Norman Lewis GMAT Experience DO NOT be under the impression that GMAT is a cakewalk . The questions are similar to or tougher than the ones in [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. DO NOT let your concentration wander . Most of us lose marks in RC and CR because we are not able to concentrate fully. Thanks and Regards Alok

  14. Hi , I took GMAT yesterday (26th Nov) and scored 720 (Q 49 , V 41) . I have been a silent member of TestMagic for about six months . The information that I gathered from this site ,including the GMAT experience of many members, helped me a lot in reaching my target score of 700+. I thank Erin for this wonderful site.I also thank Ursula,vreddy,spiderman,shaq,vingmat,post2ashish and many other members for their useful suggestions and better insight into GMAT . Thanks and Regards Alok
