  12. I registered for the test in the midst of January and received the admission ticket after about 2 months. I did it by post. One of my friends tried to register online for the exam in March, but he failed. He had to do it by post for the next exam in May with me. However, I hope it will work out for you ! Good Luck!
  13. Hi TMs (Whoever has taken offical TOEFLs before), I am scheduled to take TOEFL on May 10th. In the indentity card, my name is written in vietnamese style, that is, Nguyen Thu Trang (Surname -middle name- Given name ). But in my admission ticket, it is Nguyen Trang Thu (Surname -Given name - Middle name), following the oder the registration form requires. I wonder if it will be a problem on the test date. In my letter of identity, should I type my name as in the order of the admission ticket or as in my national indentity card? Thank you very much! ~
  14. Yes, they are the same as the very common phrases :developing countries and developed countries but which verbs and nouns go together like those? For example, A watering machine but not a watered machine A watered garden but not a watering garden But A blooming flower and a bloomed flower Please tell me the general rules! Thanks!
  15. EXCELLENT question, and a PERFECT example of an ETS gem: have increased food value is NOT AUX + PP + ADJ + NOUN E.g.: We have increased the food value of this product. but VT + ADJ + ADJ + NOUN E.g.: After the stock market boom, we had an increased company portfolio. In other words, in the correct parsing of the sentence, have is a regular transitive verb; the mistake was thinking that have was an auxiliary verb for increased. Hi Erin or others, I was also mistaken. PLease tell me the difference between "increasing food value" and "increased food value" .
  16. 3. Robert Owen hoped to prove that it was possible to both make profits and (_______) with dignity. A which treats workers B treating workers C treat workers D to treat workers Hi mate, I think the answer to question 3 should be C (treat workers).
  17. The first one is wrong! "is" and "change" are two verbs and, therefore, i think they should not placed so.The number 2 and 3 are exactly the same, no difference! My sugguestion is do a google search! Here they are: ------------ Happiness is do what you want What this does is create a demand for games All you have to do is fill in your name and address The best thing I can do is keep a dignified silence All you have to do is look around What we want to do is market a legal drug All we can do is promise that it will be kept secret All ministers have to do is wait All you have to do is answer the following question -------------- All I have to do now is wait for your comments!
  18. The noun "impact" needs a determiner. "far greater" is simply an adjectival phrase modifying it.
  19. If "labor" is the uncountable noun why "are" is correct? Mine is change "labors" to "laborers". Wouldn't you agree? If "labor" is the uncountable noun why "are" is correct? ---->If "labor" is an uncountable noun, why is "are" correct? Partly ! 1. Thanks for correcting the sentence containing "why". Sure! I will remember to check my posting before clicking "reply". 2. Well, I am not sure whether I should agree with you or not ;-) I will be more clear if you'd spend some more time helping me discern the following cases: 1. Mine is change "labors" to "laborers" 2. Mine is to change "labors" to "laborers" 3. Mine is changing "labors" to "laborers" Which is grammatically incorrect? and how are they different? Thanks!
  20. If "labor" is the uncountable noun why "are" is correct? Mine is change "labors" to "laborers". Wouldn't you agree?
  21. Well, I don't agree with your statement for question 2. For me, "While a" is also unacceptable there. Why doesn't "employee" have a determiner?
  22. Cocobella, could you do me a favor? Please check out again whether "nation" is the correct word in that sentence. Thanks!
  23. in that sentence, "organizing" should be the position of verb; therefore, you should use "organize" OK , "organize" is parallel to "operate", but "organize" itself is not enough in that sentence. It should be "to organize". Don't you think so?
  24. Hi, In the grammar book by Martinet and Thomson, there are a few words about "expect". I'd like to write them here. Maybe they will help. 1. "expect +infinitive" and "expect +object+ infinitive" can have the same meaning. I expect to arrive tomorrow = I think it is likely that I will arrive tomorrow. I expect him to arrive tomorrow. =I think it is likely that he will arrive tomorrow. 2. But very often "expect +object +infinitive" conveys the idea of duty He expects his wife to bring him breakfast in bed at weekends (he think it is her duty). 3. "Expect" can be follow by that +subject+verb" (clause). Here there is no idea of duty. Possessive pronouns can be used with gerunds. In some cases, the meaning changes a little. For example, My mother objected to me going to that fancy party My mother objected to my going to that fancy party. To ERIN and other TMs, Based on this, I agree that A is the answer. But we also know that expect can be followed by a noun, so why is C not the answer ? They seems interchangeable in some cases. But in fact, they are not in the way of semantic meaning. In the books by Martinet and Thomson, and by Cobuild, they compare the use of will and would in cases of invitation, command, suggestion....... But they are so diverse that I can't summarize them down. It's time for Erin to appear.
