  1. I applied in 2015 and this year. While I ofcourse had a better application with phd level courses I had a pretty big stain in my application (failing prelims will always make applying again extremely difficult). Even then, I was accepted with funding (and fellowships) to schools that had, in 2015, only been waitlisted to. Even with the big X in my application, I was still able to get accepted to comparable (and some will say subjectively better) school than I am now. From my personal experience it didn't really seem any more competative given I had better results than before. I can also support from my own application that getting of the waitlist was much harder. In 2015 almost all the schools who waitlisted me ended up asking if I wanted (an unfunded) offer. This year, I received many more waitlists but not one accepted me of the waitlist - all said that their first round outstanding offers had been accepted at a larger rate than prior years.
  2. I've been told by a number of macro professors that it's a great opportunity before PhD and some wished they did so before starting their doctorate instead of straight out of undergrad. I applied for the fed board RA positions before the freeze and got an email saying that my application would be sent to section recruiters mid February but never heard back. Anyone who applied before the freeze hear anything yet?
  3. I just turned down my funded offer at fsu, good luck! Try emailing them to see if you're waitlisted for funding as they're pretty fast when it comes to responded to questions.
  4. Has anyone gotten an offer from UGA? They said offers would be out next week but I haven't heard anything since!
  5. I applied 2 years ago and got on the waitlist. I didnt hear back from them until April 20ths or something offering an unfunded spot. A friend got accepted with half funding and they wouldn't match his other full funded at similar schools offers whatsoever. I received a waitlist again this year and not really hopeful of a funded offer given my past experience with boulder.
  6. UC Boulder results supposedly come out tomorrow. Last school I'm waiting for and don't think I've ever been this stressed for a result!
  7. MEDI: I contacted UNC and they have sent out their first round of offers.
  8. I was supposed to receive information about an offer I had (top 60 school) on Monday. I asked for a follow up and was told that it will arrive soon as they "had to update my offer" on the last minute. what does that mean? I'm pretty worried since I applied for a fellowship to that particular school. Anyone experienced this?
  9. When you say accidently do you mean you forgot to waive your right to see them? How many schools did you do that for? This is my second time applying (under very different circumstances though) and all letter writers have told me to always waive my right. Some have said they outright refuse to send letters out until you do. The reason is because admins heavily discount letters that did not have the rights waived. Like everyone said: if you end up going a second time, cast out a very wide net. You can never be sure how the application pool will be that year, and always good way to minimize the risk. But don't stress too much. A lot of offers get sent out in march. There is alway a chance until April 15th. I've had some friends get offers even in April 20th Since you don't have any graduate level experience, it may be good to find a place to take those as a non degree seeking student. It may be too late to apply to top 1 year master programs. I know Austin master is designed to get people into PhD programs and they fund the top students with tuition remission but deadline is march 1st.
  10. does anyone know if penn state is still giving out offers or what? They seemed to have sent out a mass amount of rejections but i have yet to hear anything! not sure if I should just assume an implicit rejection.
  11. Can anyone confirm the Irvine post in gradcafe is real? Normally they accept multiple at a time. But again, this whole admissions year seems out of wack.
  12. 2. Yeah I couldn't see myself doing anything else besides research. I wish I had done a master's first as I was honestly prepared straight from undergrad - though now I'm much more qualified to do well the first year. And since I'm relatively young (turning 23 this year) I don't think starting again would be too detrimental . 3. I spoke to the prelim graders after I got my results. I had gotten the highest score for the macro prelim. For the micro prelim I only marginally failed the second half both times. A threshold is a threshold so I wouldn't want to fight it. 4. Yes ofcourse. Let's just hope I am accepted somewhere. From comments In this forum it seems the grad gpa is going to effect me greatly (even though they are all phd courses). My professors are more positive about my prospects and encouraged me to apply somewhere else but again they're not the ones who will be accepting me this time around.
  13. Taking the field courses this years , really enjoying research.
  14. Yeah I was conflicted when he told me I should just say I got a masters , specially given that he is in the admissions committee for our program. So I'm guessing he has some experience in this. And they'll be much different , like I said , I really had a very weak background when I started and should had done a master's before going to a phd. In this case I just got to take phd level classes while doing it. The program also had an abnormally high attrition rate this year. Normally 1-2 students fail do to prelims - this year we had 7 fail.
  15. Long story short, I didn't pass the prelim exam (from top 50) and will be re applying again this year. I'll be completing a master's degree by the end of this year. I was very fortunate to have even been accepted in a phd program the first time around given that i came with low math background and an unknown state university. Im trying to be optimistic and hope that given that i was able to do well in the first year core classes that ill be able to get into another PhD program. Ill have a 3.2 G GPA when i apply - although this looks low , some of the courses havent given out As in 2 - 3 years. When it comes to applying, the advice from one of my first year professors was to not even mention or hint that i failed prelims and say that I'm a master student who got to take PhD level courses. Im also taking the 2nd year field courses ( which ironically im excelling at ) so ill have the first 2 years of PhD under my belt. Hoping to hear from anyone who is in the same position as i this year or know of anyone who has been in the same position or simply willing to give advice on what my next step should be! thanks!
