  1. Partime salary = 25*3/5 = 15 units. Fulltime salary = 75 units. Total = 75+15 = 90 units. Ratio Parttime: Total = 15:90 or 1/6.
  2. x = 11 or - 17 from A. (No way the answer is D) x = 11 or -15 from B. Taking both A and B helps you to find |x+7| hence C would be the correct solution.
  3. 2^6 - 1 is the shortest way, though understanding the mechanics is important. Total Combinations = nCr. Where n = 6. r = 1..6. (no zero because, atleast one question has to be solved) so 6C1+6C2+...+6C6 = 63.
  4. I respectfully disagree, Total Capacity = 10 Cups. After Hiking 1 cup of water is still remaining, so we have to consider 9 cups for our calculation. Hence, 9-2 (hourly loss)-3(last mile) = 4 cups for 5 miles so 4/5 cups per mile

Since the product of the 5 numbers are positive, the number of negative real numbers that are possible are {0,2,4}. For case 0: all the 3 choices of the answer holds good. For case 1: only m and n are negative. all 3 choices holds good For case 2: m,n,r,s are negative. choice a and b holds good. I dont think the question is complete.
  6. I share your concern!! But this problem can be solved quick as follows: we need to find unique, 3 digit odd integers in the range 700 Let the digit be abc. we know for odd integers the last digit should be any odd. the sample set we have for digit c is {1,3,5,7,9} the interesting thing is this sample set is restricted when the first digit "a" assumes 7 or 9 . In this case the digit c cannot assume 7 or 9. This question is better solved in 2 parts. 1) when a = 7 or 9: so for a we have 2 choices. for c we have 5-2 = 3 choices. for b we have 10-2 = 8 choices. so we have 2*3*8 = 48 choices. 2) a = 8 for a we have one choice. for c we have 5 choices. for b 8 choices so we have 1*8*5 = 40 choices. adding both, we get 88. HTH
  7. I received some private mails regading this as well!! Let me clear it for everybody. In the solution there is a typo. Incorrect 2^(m-1) = 63. correct (2^m) - 1 = 63 well spotted!! and for what it's worth I am sorry!!
  8. This thread is getting interesting!! Question: You are to choose a committee of 3 people from a pool of 3 men and 5 women. The committee has to have a minimum of 1 man. How many different ways can this be done? My interpretation of the question is : we need to find a committee of 3 from people of 8, with a condition that the committee has atleast one male. This means a committee of 3 female is not acceptable. so MMM, MMF, MFF = acceptable FFF = un acceptable. So clearly, Total - FFF will give us the committee we are searching. Total = 8C3 FFF = 5C3 so answer = 8C3 - 5C3 = 46. HTH.
  9. Glass A and glass B both contain a mixture of alcohol and water. The ratio of alcohol to water in glass A is 1 to 3. The ratio of alcohol to water in glass B is 1 to 9. 8 ounces of the mixture in glass A is taken and mixed into glass B. Then, 16 ounces of the mixture in glass B is taken and mixed into glass A. If both glasses originally contained 40 ounces of mixture, what is the final ratio of alcohol to water in glass A? A. 1:7 B. 2:7 C. 1:3 D. 5:19 E. 10:27
  10. Oh!! Yes!! I was wrong, overlooked the concept!! I stand corrected!!
  11. Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time Let the total distance be x (35 + 20)/2 = x/2. x = 60. One way distance = 60/2 = 30. Time = Distance/Speed = 30/25 = 6/5 hour = 72 minutes.
  12. It is because the other numbers can be expressed as prime factors less than 12. But 34 cannot be expressed that way... as 34 = 17*2 and 17 is a prime greater than 12. IMHO, please start a new thread for a new PS stem. Nested threads are cumbersome, esp if we want to refer/search the thread in future. I believe you also share the view that the threads are not only for momentary use.
  13. I happen to agree with 55 (8C3 - 3C3) in case, a commitee of 3 should be selected.
