  10. Excavation of the ancient city of Kourion on the island of Cyprus revealed a pattern of debris and collapsed buildings typical of towns devastated by earthquakes. Archaeologists have hypothesized that the destruction was due to a major earthquake known to have occurred near the island in A.D.365. Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the archaeologists’ hypothesis? (A) Bronze ceremonial drinking vessels that are often found in graves dating from years preceding and following A.D.365 were also found in several graves near Kourion. (B) No coins minted after A.D.365 were found in Kourion, but coins minted before that year were found in abundance. © Most modern histories of Cyprus mention that an earthquake occurred near the island in A.D.365. (D) Several small statues carved in styles current in Cyprus in the century between A.D.300 and 400 were found in Kourion. (E) Stone inscriptions in a form of the Greek alphabet that was definitely used in Cyprus after A.D.365 were found in Kourion. My question is below (highlight to see) Why is the OA B? I can think of a million reasons why coin minted after AD 365 were not found and a lot of them have nothing to do with an Earthquake. C, IMO, comes the closest. Can someone explain the OA?
  11. Thx GMATGnat. The figure explains it and I feel like giving myself a smack on the head.

  16. Congress is debating a bill requiring certain employers provide workers with unpaid leave so as to care for sick or newbom children. A) provide workers with unpaid leave so as to B )to provide workers with unpaid leave so as to C )provide workers with unpaid leave in order that they D )to provide workers with unpaid leave so that they can E) provide workers with unpaid leave and This question is from the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. What is the significance of saying (see bolded statement above). I don't understand why we use "a bill requiring". Why does the author use the particple? Is it because it modifies the bill? If the sentence had said "Congress is debating a bill that requires" then what is the difference between the two meaning wise. TIA, crash
  17. Here goes.... A)from a one-page writing sample that it can claims from is unidiomatic. The idiom is claims to. Also try reading the sentence quickly a few times without break (as there are no commas). You'll be surprised what the sentence means. A, to me at least, sounds like the firm specializes in the analysis of "handwriting claims from a one page writing sample..". Do you see what I mean. It's almost as if ""handwriting claims from a one page writing sample.." is some unique thing. Ask yourself what does the firm analyze. Handwriting or ""handwriting claims from a one page writing sample..". I hope I have not confused you! B) from a one-page writing sample it has the ability of assessing this one has some of the same problems as above and also ability of is unidomatic. ability to is the correct idiom. C)the ability, from a one-page writing sample,of assessing Again, ability of D)to be able, from a one-page writing sample,to assess I don't like the to be able, but this choice doesn't suffer from idiom errors E)being able to assess, from a one-page writing sample, being able to assess is wordy. anyway, what is the OA? Tell me, so I know that I don't have it all wrong :)
  18. [Keeping it on topic. - Erin] TIA - Means "Thanks in advance". TIA has multiple benefits. Firstly, it saves the author of the original post from personally replying to every respondent with a "Thank You", secondly, it keeps the thread clean and thirdly, it saves space on the precious servers that host this forum.
  19. The following appeared in the editorial section of a monthly business news magazine: "Most companies would agree that as the risk of physical injury occurring on the job increases, the wages paid to employees should also increase. Hence it makes financial sense for employers to make the workplace safer: they could thus reduce their payroll expenses and save money." Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion. This is a weak argument. It concludes that a company will be able to reduce payroll expenses if it made the workplace safer. The premise of the argument is that the employees’ salaries must increase if the risk of physical injury increases. Let’s start by analyzing the premise of the argument. It is gross generalization to say that salaries of employees should increase just because the risk of physical injury increases. Firstly, it will be extremely hard for companies to attach a concrete sum of money to the “risk” of physical injury. The company will have to make predictions about the actual injury, which might not or might occur in the future, and apply a monetary value to it. For example, how can companies fairly assess the risk of someone working in a furnace to someone working in the kitchen of a restaurant. How will companies distinguish, monetarily, the risk of injuries of injuries to these very different sets of employees in two different workplaces. Secondly, what happens if the employee never gets injured during his/her time with the company. This would mean that the company has compensated an employee for injuries that did not occur. From the company’s standpoint, this does not make fiscal sense. Thirdly, I disagree with the premise the wage increase is an effective means to compensate employees for future risk. The company could use the money instead to build better first aid facilities in the premises. A blanket wage increase policy is just not feasible. The conclusion of the argument states that making the workplace safer will reduce payroll expenses. The conclusion is inaccurate and tries to directly link work place safety to general wage increase of employees. A company cannot just reduce its payroll expenses by simply making its workplace safer. Wage increases are completely orthogonal to the issue of workplace safety. Wage increases depend on a lot of factors, such as the economy, inflation and government policy. The author of the argument incorrectly assumes that the workplace safety is the only factor that affects wages. Lack of data or any statistical analysis also makes this argument vulnerable. The author cites “most companies” in the original sentence but fails to tell the reader if the companies who the author spoke to represent a broad range and multiple disciplines. The author also doesn’t talk about what the employees of the companies think. Employees might not prefer wage reduction as a means to make their workplace safer. The author also doesn’t clarify if the reduction of wages is a one time act or can companies continue to reduce wages as they make their worksplace safer. As you can imagine, constant reduction of wages could lead to a stage where the the company pays minimum wage to employees who work in safest environments. TIA.
  20. According to the Tristate Transportation Authority, making certain improvements to the main commuter rail line would increase ridership dramatically. The authority plans to finance these improvements over the course of five years by raising automobile tolls on the two high-way bridges along the route the rail line serves. Although the proposed improvements are indeed needed, the authority’s plan for securing the necessary funds should be rejected because it would unfairly force drivers to absorb the entire cost of something from which they receive no benefit. 119. Which of the following, if true, would cast the most doubt on the effectiveness of the authority’s plan to finance the proposed improvements by increasing bridge tolls? (A) Before the authority increases tolls on any of the area bridges, it is required by law to hold public hearings at which objections to the proposed increase can be raised. (B) Whenever bridge tolls are increased, the authority must pay a private contractor to adjust the automated toll-collecting machines. © Between the time a proposed toll increase is announced and the time the increase is actually put into effect, many commuters buy more tokens than usual to postpone the effects of the increase. (D) When tolls were last increased on the two bridges in question, almost 20 percent of the regular commuter traffic switched to a slightly longer alternative route that has since been improved. (E) The chairman of the authority is a member of the Tristate Automobile Club that has registered strong opposition to the proposed toll increase. Why is D better than C. The explanation in the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] is not very solid. Why is *many* more significant than 20 percent. Also D refers to previous fact. Given, that this happened in the past but it is not certain that it will again. Ideas?
  21. "Any political organization that advocates the use of violence to achieve its goals should be prohibited from operating within our nation. Such groups are detrimental to society since violent, short-term solutions can only lead to more serious long-term problems." Discuss how well-reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion, be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. This is a weak argument and relies on weak evidence. The author of this statement does not give us any examples to convince us of his point. The author states that political organizations that advocate the use of violence should be prohibited from our nation. Although most people will agree with this statement, they would also agree that violence has been effectively used in political organizations to achieve great and peaceful goals. The categorical prohibition of the use violence by the author is not supported by any concrete facts. Given the history of mankind, it would foolish to assume that every instance of violence in political organizations has been detrimental to society. The author also states that violent behavior leads to short-term solutions. The author provides no data to support this statement. Not all goals achieved by violence are short term. Evidence provided by the author would strengthen his point but no such evidence is available. The statement that political organizations that advocate the use of violence are detrimental to society is also lacking in substance. To weaken this premise one can give the example of the American Revolution where violence was advocated to achieve political supremacy. Countless other examples can also be found in history that show that sometimes society benefits from the use of violence. To sometimes break free from the clutches of a despot or a corrupt government, society has to take up arms to protect itself. To strengthen his point the author would have to do a careful study to understand the long-term effects of violence and how that shapes our behavior. And finally the premise that violence leads to short-term solutions which lead to more serious long-term problems is totally unfounded. There is absolutely no evidence to support the author's claims. Once again, a number of examples can be given to demonstrate the violent acts have lead to long-lasting peace. On the other hand, the author can strengthen this premise by showing that short-term gains achieved by violence get completely over shadowed by long-term problems arising from these solutions. TIA
  22. "Primary and secondary education should focus on training students for the highly specialized jobs of the future, rather than on providing them with a broad range of non-specific skills and information." Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above. Support your position with reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading. I disagree with the opinion that Primary and Secondary education should focus on training students specialized jobs. The fundamental purpose of Primary and Secondary education is to teach students basic concepts and to lay a foundation on which Tertiary education is built. Basic courses in Science and Scoial Sciences help students to gain a wide array of skills. Not only do students gain the critical and analytical skills required for a Science course but they also learn valuable lessons from History and Civics. This breadth of knowledge is essential in developing a fertile ground on which the seeds of greater knowledge can be sown. The variety of courses taught in the Primary and Secondary education also enable interaction between students who have wide ranging interests. This interaction in turn leads to new ideas and creative thinking. The world ecnomy is changing at a rapid pace. Skills extremely important today become obsolete tomorrow. New technologies and processes require that individuals possess flexible minds and that they can take on new challenges. It is clear that in such a world, an individual who was taught specific skills would be at a significant disadvantage. By the time a student, taught specific skills at Primary or Secondary school, is ready to take up a job, the job might not exist. The constant change in labor conditions around the world also illustrate the need to have a wide array of skills rather than a specific set. Cheap labor markets such as those in India and China can easily supplant labor forces in any part of the world. There are numerous examples of villages in China that specialize in making goods such micro-ships and mobile phones. A student armed with these skills gained at the Primary and Secondary level will not be able to compete with such communities. Students rarely know what path their careers will take in Primary and Secondary school. It is not fair to put the burden on a student to decide what area he or she should specialize in. Obviously, there is a danger that a student who hates Science today might just love it a few years from now and this might render the specialized education totally useless in just a few years. Hence, it is my opinion that the main objective of the Primary and Secondary education is not to provide skills for specialized jobs, but to provide a wide-ranging education. TIA
  23. D : Most clearly says that Cheese deficiency causes Measles and Chickenpox and that weakens the argument. Therefore, abstaining from cheese will lead to more childhood diseases such as Measles and Chicken Pox.
