  1. 180. Movies are popular all over the world. Explain why movies are so popular. Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer. Nowadays, movies have become very popular in our life. In Macao, there is at least one new film hitting cinemas, while television stations often play old films for free. The reason why movies are so popular is as follow. First, we can learn a lot of things from movies, for example, language, culture, history, etc. In my French class, my teacher likes to play French movies as one of her teaching material. All of our classmates like this way and think it is interesting and effective to learn foreign language. Besides, apart from learning language, we also lively learnt French culture that is very different from ours. Movie is also a good history teacher. The most impressive movie for me is ¡§Schindler¡¦s List¡¨ shoot by a famous director Steven Spielberg. It let me know how cruel Nazi killed Jewish in Germany in early last century. Second, watching movie can release pressure. Most of us live in a modern and high-tech age. Comparing with my grandma¡¦s age, it provides us a more comfortable, effective, and rich life. However, it gives us a lot of pressure as well. Nearly everyday, we face pressure from our job, family, colleagues, etc. Pressure makes us easily nervous and have negative mood. Movie provides us an easy and economic way to release our pressure. Movie can take us away from reality and let us forget the trouble around us temporally. Third, watching movie has become a symbol of showing romance between people, especially for young couples. In Macao, cinemas are often full in weekends, for many people like to go to cinema as one of their weekend program. Among them, most are young couples. Boys like to invite girls to cinema as an excuse to date them. Cinemas are therefore regarded romantic places for showing love. In all, from the reason above, we know that movie is such a thing that makes almost everyone likes it. There is no doubt that movies have become popular and inevitable to our life. 2. 179. What are some of the qualities of a good parent? Use specific details and examples to explain your answer. It is easy for adult to give birth to a child, but not for everyone to be a good parent. Though I haven¡¦t any child, I think a good parent should have some suitable qualities. Some of them are as follows. First, a good parent should have a heart of love. Many evidences show that children have a happy childhood more likely if they grow up in an environment full of love. I am lucky that my parents love me very much. When I was a little girl, I was too shy to talk to strangers, so I used to play alone and feel lonely. For helping me to be happy, my mother often talks to me, sing with me, and help me to make friend with other kids. Instead of forcing me to meet strangers, she influenced me by encouraging while I was getting along with others. Gradually, I became accustomed to meeting strangers and loved to be with other kids, thanks to my mother¡¦s love. Second, a good parent should have responsibility that enables his or her child to live in a safe and happy environment. From media sources, I have seen many young parents who are unmarried and not ready to be parents. In such cases, many of them are lack of stable incomes as well. As a result, many social problems arise by abandoned enfant¡Babused children and children who are unable to go to school, etc. I do want to ask such parents, ¡§If you are not ready to be parents, why do you give birth to your child?¡¨ Third, a good parent should take time to accompany his or her child. Nowadays, as many parents have a job, they usually hire baby-sitters for taking care of their children. To some extent, Baby-sitters replace the parents¡¦ role. Baby-sitters eat¡Bsleep¡Btalk¡Bplay games with the children they are taking care. Someone even knows the children more than their parents who are always busy. Under such circumstances, some parents like to give a lot of petty cash or gift to their children for compensation. However, can it really compensate anything? According to a lot of studys in children psychology, children who grow up in loneness often become selfish, quiet and lack of self-confidence, or even have worse characters. All in all, a heart of love¡Bresponsibility¡Btime are of the essence of being a good parent. I will not be a mother until I think I have such qualities. Title edited by Erin.
  3. 181. In your country, is there more need for land to be left in its natural condition or is there more need for land to be developed for housing and industry? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. I live in a small city, Macao. It is a beautiful peninsula located in the southern China. Though this city is small, I think there is more need for land to be left in its natural condition. First, population of Macao has come to a stability level. It¡¦s no doubt that our city¡¦s population has increased a lot since 1980¡¦s, and it has become a city whose population density is at the highest side in the world. However, the increase is mainly caused by the immigrating trend of inflow from Mainland China in the past 20 years. Nowadays, with the economic growth leap of Mainland China, immigrants from China to our city has become fewer and fewer. In addition, there is a low-birth trend among young Macao couples who don¡¦t like to raise child. Therefore, the yearly birth rate in Macao nearly hit a new low last year. I therefore can predict that the increase of population will slow down in the future; it means less demand for housing. Second, the major industry in Macao is tourism. The past star industries in Macao, such as manufacture of toys, garment, electronic parts, has vanished, under its failure in competition with Mainland China. Many factories closed in the 1990¡¦s. On the other hand, the tourism industry that has been a long history in Macao becomes more prosperous than before. With many famous casinos and the city¡¦s unique architecture style, Macao attracts millions of tourists all over the world every year. Tourism has become the most important income source of our city. It means less demand for industrial land. Third, it is beneficial to preserve natural land for developing tourism. Macao tourism has a long existing problem that it is too small to attract tourists to stay overnight. If we have more tourism points to provide, the situation might be better. Preserved natural lands can be used as natural parks, trek routes, and nature-style resorts, etc, all of which can add our city¡¦s tourism selling point. Besides, along with the city development in these 20 years, air pollution has become a problem in Macao. Natural lands may release this problem and keep our city more fresh¡Bmore clean, and more charming. In short, considering the population and industry trend in Macao, the need of leaving land in its nature conditions overweigh the need of developing land for housing and industries. Basically, for Macao, there is no need for developing industrial land in the near future, but preserving nature environment is obviously a benefit to our economy.
