181. In your country, is there more need for land to be left in its natural condition or is there more need for land to be developed for housing and industry? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
I live in a small city, Macao. It is a beautiful peninsula located in the southern China. Though this city is small, I think there is more need for land to be left in its natural condition.
First, population of Macao has come to a stability level. It¡¦s no doubt that our city¡¦s population has increased a lot since 1980¡¦s, and it has become a city whose population density is at the highest side in the world. However, the increase is mainly caused by the immigrating trend of inflow from Mainland China in the past 20 years. Nowadays, with the economic growth leap of Mainland China, immigrants from China to our city has become fewer and fewer. In addition, there is a low-birth trend among young Macao couples who don¡¦t like to raise child. Therefore, the yearly birth rate in Macao nearly hit a new low last year. I therefore can predict that the increase of population will slow down in the future; it means less demand for housing.
Second, the major industry in Macao is tourism. The past star industries in Macao, such as manufacture of toys, garment, electronic parts, has vanished, under its failure in competition with Mainland China. Many factories closed in the 1990¡¦s. On the other hand, the tourism industry that has been a long history in Macao becomes more prosperous than before. With many famous casinos and the city¡¦s unique architecture style, Macao attracts millions of tourists all over the world every year. Tourism has become the most important income source of our city. It means less demand for industrial land.
Third, it is beneficial to preserve natural land for developing tourism. Macao tourism has a long existing problem that it is too small to attract tourists to stay overnight. If we have more tourism points to provide, the situation might be better. Preserved natural lands can be used as natural parks, trek routes, and nature-style resorts, etc, all of which can add our city¡¦s tourism selling point. Besides, along with the city development in these 20 years, air pollution has become a problem in Macao. Natural lands may release this problem and keep our city more fresh¡Bmore clean, and more charming.
In short, considering the population and industry trend in Macao, the need of leaving land in its nature conditions overweigh the need of developing land for housing and industries. Basically, for Macao, there is no need for developing industrial land in the near future, but preserving nature environment is obviously a benefit to our economy.
