  1. I don't want to repost all that stuff since it is documented elsewhere. I can provide it if you PM me.
  2. wow. I did not expect to see a UCI thread =) I'm going there too
  3. UCI - econometrics/statistics emphasis. i'm not really sure about another emphasis because i dont have that much exposure. possibly micro and IO.
  4. I'm saying its possible as this was the case for myself. My "advisor" told me its always better to attempt harder classes resulting in non-stellar grades than not to take harder classes and leave the adcom questioning your abilities. I guess if you don't get stellar grades in harder classes, the adcom will question your abilities anyway. i think research is important. it shows adcom that you like a certain field, can produce output, and you know what research is about. not only does it look good to adcoms but also tests whether YOU like research or not. if you cannot find official RA positions, try taking seminar classes. seminar classes usually require papers that are supervised. EDIT: GRE quant/analytical scores are important. gre quant is very basic; there is no reason why a phd student cannot perform well on it. I spoke with a member of adcom at UCI (where I am matriculating) about the admission process. they initially make GRE score cuts with math/stat/quant preparation following that. they want to know whether you can pass the core courses. from there they read sop, lors, and other items.
  5. I think the important thing is if you're a good fit to the school. For the schools that are not in the top 20 - in my opinion - profiles are not that homogeneous. I met a quite a few people at fly-outs and profiles are pretty different. The one characteristic that helped students with weaker coursework is research. I met quite a few people from the worldbank and the federal reserve. This kind of made up for the lack of technical classes. regarding math gpa, my gpa is kind of low. i think its either 3.0 or slightly higher with real analysis/LA/abstract algebra/math stats/prob theory/linear modeling, and I made it into BU/UT Austin. my advice is to take as much math as you can and do as much research as you can.
  6. I like the book "Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis" by John Rice. It's more rigorous than "social science statistics" but not rigorous like measure theory. It covers probability theory, all the popular distributions, normal theory, maximum likelihood, some bayesian stuff, and a few more topics. you only need to know up to multivariable calculus to read this book.
  7. the easier way is.... 12^10 can be modified to (3*4)^10. or (3^10)*(4^10) or (3^10)*(2*2)^10 or (3^10)*(2)^20. notice that there 2^n cannot divide into (3^10), so it has to divide into (2)^20. if 2^n divides into 2^20, then n has to equal 20.
  8. I will most likely matriculate at UCI. They are very confident about placement and their faculty. They offered me a lot of money too =)
  9. They are going to hire 2-3 new faculty and are aggressively hiring more. That's what the faculty told me.
  10. I was at UCI over the weekend. Their placement (according to them) was really strong last year. Four of them went into academic jobs like Tulane, U Mich something (not ann arbor), and some other university I cannot recall. I'm not sure about finance jobs although that's what I want to do also. Their finance is nonexistent although you could go through the business school there.
  11. (double post) will post impressions after dinner. They brought us to a "Texas BBQ" restaurant, but one of the faculty told me that the food isn't really Texas-style. I need some real food...
  12. i just got back from the UT "graduate recruitment" fly-out. my letter was here a few days ago when i was away. it is dated 3/19 on the envelope and 3/9 on the paper inside. Skipper, did you attend the fly-out also?
  13. Werther, I realized this problem before applying to UBC. I may finish the masters program - which is one year - and apply when all my grades are in. This strategy will delay a PhD program for 2 years. I'm wondering if this delay would be worth it. EDIT: No financial aid info yet. My email was from the college and not the department. Aid info will come from the department.
  14. The entry is not mine, but I just got an email saying I got into the Masters-stream program. I am very excited as UBC is a top program in Canada. My undergrad profile is not that bad but its not that good either. Will the UBC masters program help my profile a good amount? Please provide some input and good luck everybody.
  15. I have a similar concern. no funding at UT austin (the "good" school in our example) versus fantastic funding at UCI (the "not so good" school). are there any opinions on job market opportunities relating to this matter? will salaries and job choice be pretty similar for a UT austin grad vs. UCI?
