first off to clear up the month confusion
well the test center concluded gre can be taken once every calendar month so the first one i had at the end of november and the second in december.
my background
i live in turkey and attended a secondary school with a english preparation class for a year. then i had 4-8 hours english per week for the following 6 years. it was the high scholl mainly where i built up my english skills and vocabulary. my undergraduate corses are all taught in english but i must concede my english deteroirated in the uni mainly because i study computing as a major. so oscillate (from a network course : ) ) and ambiguity (from algorithm design) must be the only words off the barrons list that i came to learn from my undergrad curriculum!
my preparation
for verbal
i started in early september. studied barrons list. i tried to memorize the word lists, randomly :) selecting three-four wordlists a day, before school starts. After the school started in late sept, i couldnt focus much but to my delight, I encountered a website that cited software downloads for gre word lists and downloaded prosigner software for verbal, the wordlist is similar to the barrons with maybe 100-200 words more in the program. i found that this software (and similar ones probably ) was very helpful in reviewing vocabulary that I previously studied as a multiple choice format provided in such programs alleviated the boredom that is inherent in studying long word lists from a hard copy. however there is a danger, in that, one must have known how to make sentences, the context, meaning well before trying to memorize them only from first and secondary meanings. otherwise you may think you just know the word but cannot make a semantic link in analogy or sentence completion questions etc
another tactic maybe learning a bit etymology. not that i took any such course in the uni. but many of the words in those lists come from some latin, archaic german origin that learning some prefix, postfix, some common stems may be very useful. besides it was more likely to remember a word i knew the "story " of. and it is not as time consuming as it sounds because in the end when you read the etymology of the word from an online dictionary you spend the same time as you would memorizing a word that do not give any hint to you
i also went over the princeton review for verbal but found the questions much more difficult compared to the real gre i took
i had mainly focused on memorizing the word lists and cannot say i solved enough practice tests only 2 from barrons and the two from powerprep
for quantitative
i looked at the math review from gre website and solved the questions in barrons subject review test questions. coming from a technical background i did not focus much on quantititative part
for AWA
i read the guidelines from the gre website and wrote the essay for one of the practice tests in powerprep. i guess two or three examples essays for each section in AWA must be sufficient if you are complaisant with your writing skills generally
verbal 500 vs 720
on the day of the former examination, i went to the test center to find out there was a "technical" problem in the the laboratory that I was scheduled to have the exam. they told me i can probably (they were not sure and told they will call me after contacting with ets)have the exam the day after. i was agitated as i had an important appointment on the following day but didnt want to miss the opportunity to enter the exam for a second time in december. i spent the afternoon calling ets's european bureau for some misunderstanding between the test center and ets because i had to confirm the exam for the new date etc. finally i was having the exam, awa went pretty smoothly, i didnt take a break and proceeded to verbal a few seconds after awa. i guess i should have taken the break ( i am a pretty hasty person when taking exams). and the verbal! i was giving answers quickly, not thinking thoroughly and the questions seemed to be getting easier and easier. that added up to my anxiety and when i saw the score i was frustrated but knew it was not due to insufficient preparation.
seond exam, i took all the breaks, tried to rest my head and be calm. i took a lot of time answering the first questions in the verbal which made me again a bit nervous when i saw RCs 90 lines long! but apart from being long they were not any harder than the questions i have seen in prep. books or powerprep
the quantitative parts were much more difficult than the ones in powerprep or other sources.as some other person noted the difficulty arises from the ratio of subjects. more probability, statistics (basic mean mode meadian) questions. but the graph questions were very clear, i must say.
hope these help
