  1. Hi tsdvj, you are a GMAT guy but I am GRE. that's why the confusion in pp questions. i am sorry. i should have mentioned it earlier.
  2. I downloaded powerprep from gre.org. Its version is Version 3.0.525 v 1.09.
  3. In the normal distribution shown (I can not represent the curve), the X-values 350, 450, and 550 are evenly spaced along the horizontal axis. The 15th, 30th and 45th percentiles of the distribution, however, are not evenly spaced along the horizontal axis. The area between the curve, the horizontal axis, the vertical line at the 15th percentile, and the vertical line at the 30th %tile represents 15 % of the x-values in the distribution (the yellow shader region). The area between the curve, the horizontal axis, the vertical line at the 30th percentile, and the vertical line at the 45th %tile represents 15 % of the x-values in the distribution (the blue shader region). Given the shape of the N D and the fact that the yallow shaded area equals the blue shaded area, one can conclude that the width of the yellow region is greater than the width of blue. Thus the 30th %tile must be at an x-value to the right of 450. Since the kth %tile of the distribution is 450, k must be less than 30. ---------------------------------------------- My point is, as the normal distribution is symmetrical at x=mean so value of x will be again 450 at the other side of the curve, giving a k value more than 30 % tile. And so the answer should be D ie can not be determined from the given conditions. Please explain me if I am wrong. Please Please................
  4. It is quant comparison question (set #3) of practice questions, not practice test. All of the sets contain 20 problems each. May be you are using previous version of PP.
  5. Hi tsdvj, It is not possible to cut and paste from powerprep explanation. I can give you exact question number of the problem. question no: 17 Quan Comparison, Practice Question Set #3 It will be of great help if you go through the PP software once more for me.
  6. I think range is high value - low value.
  7. Hi tsdvj, The answer is K less than 30. Actually it is a powerprep problem. I found the explanation there. But I am not convinced with the explanation. I will be happy if some one can help me out.
  8. Could someone please explain the problem? The variable X is normally distributed. The value of X at the 45th, the 15th, and the Kth percentiles of the distribution are 550, 350, and 450 respectively. A B K 30 Thanks.
  9. Give me some feedback on this argument. 230. The following appeared in a recommendation from the planning department of the city of Transopolis. "Ten years ago, as part of a comprehensive urban renewal program, the city of Transopolis adapted for industrial use a large area of severely substandard housing near the freeway. Subsequently, several factories were constructed there, crime rates in the area declined, and property tax revenues for the entire city increased. To further revitalize the city, we should now take similar action in a declining residential area on the opposite side of the city. Since some houses and apartments in existing nearby neighborhoods are currently unoccupied, alternate housing for those displaced by this action will be readily available." In this argument the author concludes that to revitalize the city of Transopolis, urban renewal program in a declining residential area should be taken into consideration. To support this argument the author points out that ten years ago the city adapted the same program to use the large substandard housing near freeway industrially which consequently reduced crime rates and increased tax and unoccupied apartments in the nearby neighborhood can be used for those displaced. While the argument is somewhat convincing, the reasoning in this argument suffers from three problems. To begin with, there is no evidence that, what the declining residence area means, that is, in what way the area is being affected. There must be some reasons may be political, natural, or social causes for not growing up in that particular area. It is to be mentioned that if the people living over there own their house or live in apartment, then it is government's responsibility to relocate them properly. Secondly, the author assumes that, any plan which was successful ten years ago is also that much relevant in present, and if that plan is taken care of it will going to do much good for society. Finally, industrial growth simultaneously means development to nearby residential areas. A well planned industrial belt, which is highly recommended, certainly should include home, land, school, culture and many more. For all these to be taken care of budget should be properly planned. In conclusion, the author's argument is only modestly supported. To strengthen the argument, the author would need to provide statistical evidence that proper relocation is possible with out having mass agitation and with out doing any harm to any city dweller. In addition the author would also have to show that the program will involve proper planning and managing the whole task.
  10. Thank you robs. I know I am not good at writing. Thank you for your clarification.
  11. Any constructive criticism is welcomed. 223. Education is primarily a personal matter; it has little to do with school or college. The speaker asserts that school or college has very little to do with one's educational growth, rather it is mainly one's personal matter. I agree with the speaker insofar as it is very true that ultimately what matters is the proper education and success in one's life irrespective of his institutional background. However, in my view a prime institution plays a vital role in modeling one's academic soundness. First of all we need to consider that, how much education is one's personal matter. I think at an early stage of life when any child starts questioning about everything around him, and learns each an every bits and pieces of world in time, then there is hardly any difference in intelligence among different children. Then it is parent’s responsibility to support them in their quest for knowledge and thus any child becomes below average, average or above average. Then institution comes to play its role, which can again nurture their thirst for being educated. It has been found that students from not well known institutions also come up with a great shine in their life. It then becomes particularly their interest. Generally the students in any average institutions are not that much competitive in mind and when any prosperous student comes into that institution then the teachers become over enthusiastic about that particular student, and help him doing much better in academically. And ultimately it all boils down to one's personal achievements, instinct and living a meaningful life, no matter from where he came from. Society welcomes people with intelligence, wit and personality same way it does so for any others coming out of any prestigious institution. My personal experience tells me that, it really matters which institution you belong to. I came across one of my friends as he was an intelligent guy from a local school always suffered from inferiority complex. Though he became well established in future but he always felt that his class mates in undergraduates are more prompt and aware than him and it made him feel less confident. I think what is important is a very good competition. Healthy competition leads to a great confident which again gives the key to success. In sum, I agree that student's forte is all that matters, however prime institutions also help students to instill some eternal qualities into them. Again it is to be noted that entering into a reputed institution does not imply that the particular student is going to excel in life no matter how he spends his student life. On balance, a moderately good institution along with students’ willingness and tenacity to learn more and more gives a perfect blend to acquire good education. --- Thank you very much
