  1. Hello Erin, Could you please explain why E is the answer, not C? Thanks, Todd Weighing nearly four pounds, with almost three times as many pages as the first edition, Cantell, in the revision of his earlier best-seller, presents a highly detailed summary of federal tax law and its implications for farmers and landowners. A)... B) the best-seller written by Cantell and now revised C) the revised best-seller written by Cantell D) Cantell's earlier best-seller is revised and E) Cantell's revision of his earlier best-seller
  2. Hello Erin, Please help me on this question? I don't see anything wrong in choice D but the answer is E...... Thanks, Todd Made of linen by young girls whose eyesight was permanently impaired by the fineness of the work, the museum installed special cases so that spectators could view the Chinese tapestries under magnification. A) museum installed special cases so that spectators could view the Chinese tapestries under magnification B) museum installed the Chinese tapestries in special cases so that those coming to the museum could view them under magnification. C) museum installed the Chinese tapestries so that spectators could view them in special cases under manification. D) Chinese tapestries were installed by the museum so that spectators could view them in special cases under magnification E) Chinese tapestries were installed in special cases so that those who came to the museum could view them under magnification.
  3. Hello Erin, Could you please explain why C is the wrong answer? I know there has to be "s" for the word "contain" since the next generation is sigular but I believe there has to be some more mistakes to eliminate this choice...... (answer E) Thanks, Todd Accoriding to most evolutionary theories, a "successful" individual must have some structure or perform some activity to ensure the next generation will contain creatures more like themselves than like others of the species. A) to ensure the next generation will contain creatures more like themselves than like others of the species B) to ensure creatures morelike itself than like others of its species will be contained in the next generation C) ensuring that the next generation contain creatures more like itself than others of its species D) that ensures the next generation contains creatures more like themselves than others of the species E) that ensures that the next generation contains creatures more like itself than others of its species
  4. Hi Erin, Could you please explain why answer choice D resolves the paradox? I don't quite understand what D is trying to say.... Thanks, Todd Construction contractors working on the cutting edge of technology nearly always work on a "cost-plus" basis only. One kind of cost-plus contract stipulates the contractor's profit as a fixed percentage of the contractor's costs; the other kind stipulates a fixed amount of profit over and above costs.Under the first kind of contract, higher costs yield higher profits for the contractor, so this is where one might expect final costs in excess of original cost estimates to be more common. Paradoxically, such cost overruns are actually more common if the contract is of the fixed-profit kind. Which one of the following , if true, most helps to resolve the apparent paradox in the situation described above? A) Clients are much less likely to agree to a fixed-profit type of cost plus contract when it is understood that under certain conditons the project will be scuttled than they are when there is no such understanding B) On long-term contracts, cost projections take future inflation into account, but since the figures used are provided by the government, they are usually underestimates. C) On any sizable construction project, the contractor bills the client monthly or quarterly, so any tendency for original cost estimates to be exceeded can be detected early. D) Clients billed under a cost-plus contract are free to review individual billings in order to uncover wasteful expenditures, but they do so only when the contractor's profit varies with cost. E) The practice of submitting deliberately exaggerated cost estimates is most common in the case of fixed-profit contracts because it makes the profit, as a percentage of estimated cost, appear modest.
  5. Hi Erin, Could you please explain why D is the answer? I know some other choices are wrong but, to me, this "20% less often~" choice is not persuasive enough to resolve the discrepancy.....Please help, Todd Adults who work outside the home spend, on average, 100 minutes less time each week in preparing dinner than adults who do not work outside the home. But, contrary to expectation, comparisons show that the dinners eaten at home by the two groups of adults do not differ significantly with respect to nutritional value, variety of menus, or number of courses. Which one of the following, if true, most helps to resolve the apparent discrepancy in the information above? A) The fat content of the dinner eaten at home by adults who do not work outside the home is 25% higher than national guidelines recommend. B) Adults who do not work outside the home tend to prepare breakfast more often than adults who work outside the home. C) Adults who work outside the home spend 2 hours less time per day on all household responsibilities, including dinner preparation, than do adults who do not work outside the home. D) Adults who work outside the home eat dinner at home 20% less often than do adults who do not work outside the home. E) Adults who work outside the home are less likely to plan dinner menus well in advance than are adults who do not work outside the home.
  6. Hello Erin, Could you please help me on this? I thought answer is E but actually D. I guess my question is why we need " it is " after "as~" ? Thanks, Todd The key to Japan's worldwide commercial succcess is not so much government policy, although that too is a factor, but fierce domestic competition; after outpacing local rivals, firms often find that foreign competitors are simply no match for them. A) but fierce domestic competition B) but domestically fierce competition C) but rather it is fierce domestic competition D) as it is fierce domestic competition E) as competition that is fierce domestically
  7. Hello Erin, Could you please explain why E is wrong? (answer B) Thanks, Todd Millions of female bats rear their pups in Bracken Cave. Although the mothers all leave the cave nightly, on their return each mother is almost always swiftly reunited with her own pup. Since the bat's calls are their only means of finding one another, and a bat pup cannot distinguish the call of its mother from that of any other adult bat, it is clear that each mother bat can recoguize the call of her pup. The argument seeks to do which of the following? A) derive a general conlusion about all members of a group from facts known about reqresentative members of that group. B) establish the validity of one explanation for a phenomenon by excluding alternative explanations. C) support, by describing a suitable mechanism, the hypothesis that a certain phenomenon can occur D) conclude that members of two groups are likely to share a certain ability because of other characteristic they share E) demonstrate that a general rule applies in a particular case.
  8. Hello Erin, Could you please explain why B is the answer, not D? I don't quite understand what B really means... Thanks for your help, Todd Even in ancient times, specialized farms (farms that grow a single type of crop or livestock) existed only where there were large commercial markets for farm products, and such markets presuppose urban populations. Therefore, the extensive ruins in the archaeological site at Kadshim are probably the remains of a largely uninhabited ceremonical structure rather than of a densely populated city, since the land in the region of Kadshim could never have supported any farms except mixed farms, which grow a variety of crops and livestock. Which one of the following is an error of reasoning in the argument? A) taking the fact that something is true of one sample of a class of things as evidence that the same is true of the entire class of things. B) taking the nonexistense of something as evidence that a necessary precondition for that thing also did not exist. C) interpreting an ambiguous claim in one way in one part of the argument and in another way in another part of the argument. D) supposing that because two things usually occur in conjunction with one another, one of them must be the cause of the other. E) drawing a conclusion that is simply a restatement of one of the premises on which the argument is based.
  9. Hi Erin, I was wondering the difference between "the sentencing" and "the senctences" in this question. I chose D but the answer is E... Could you please help me on this? Thanks, Todd Federal judges are sentencing white-collar criminals to prison with more and more frequency and the sentencing, even though still shorter than the average for crimes such as armed robbery, have increased in length. A)... B) more and more frequency and the sentencing, though still shorter than the average for such crimes as armed robbery, has increased. C) higher frequency and the sentences, even though still shorter than the average fro cirmes such as armed robbery, are increased. D) greater frequency and the sentencing, although still shorter than the average for such crimes as armed robbery, has been increasing. E) greater frequency and the sentences, though still shorter than the average for such crimes as armed robbery, have increased.
  10. Hi, Can anybody explain why E is the answer, not B?? Thanks, todd Several carefully conducted studies showed that 75 percent of strict vegetarians reached age 50 without developing serious heart disease. We can conclude from this that avoiding meat increases one's chances of avoiding serious heart disease. Therefore, people who want to reduce the risk of serious heart disease should not eat meat. The flawed pattern of reasoning exhibited by which one of the following is most similar to that exhibited by the argument above? A) The majority of people who reglarly drive over the speed limit will become involved in traffic accidents. To avoid harm to people who do not drive over the speed limit, we should hire more police officers to enforce the speed limit. B) Studies have shown that cigarette smokers have a greater chance of incurring heart disease than people who do not smoke. Since cigarette smoking increases one's chances of incurring heart disease, people who want to try to avoid heart disease should give up cigarette smoking. C) The majority of people who regularly drink coffee experience dental problems in the latter part of their lives. Since there is this correlation between drinking coffee and incurring dental problems, the government should make coffee less accessible to the general public. D) Studies show that people who do not exercise regularly have a shorter life expectancy than those who exercise regularly. To help increase their patients'life expectancy, doctors should recommend regular exercise to their patients. E) Most people who exercise regularly are able to handle stress. This shows that exercising regularly decreases one's chances of being overwhelmed by stress. So people who want to be able to handle stress should regularly engage in excercise.
  11. Hi, Can someone explain why B is the answer? I chose A for this..... Thanks Since the 1930's aircraft manufacturers have tried to build airplanes with frictionless wings, shaped so smoothly and perfectly that the air passing over them would not become turbulent. A) wings, shaped so smoothly and perfectly B) wings, wings so smooth and so perfectly shaped C) wings that are shaped so smooth and perfect D) wings, shaped in such a smooth and perfect manner E) wings, wings having been shaped smoothly and perfectly so
  12. Hi Erin, Could you please explain why (A) is wrong? I thought just getting rid of this subjective factors would conclude this passage well rather than getting rid of whole matter as (D) states..... Some people oppose special college admissions programs for minority students on the ground that merit alone-as measured by high school grades, scores on entrance exams, and other objective standards-should be used in admissions decisions. This argument ignores the facts that non-merit factors have always been considered by colleges. For instance, the applicant's place of origin, whether a parent is a graduate of the college, and so on. These subjective factors are usually such as to exclude minority groups students. Which of the following would best complete the paragraph above? A) Therefore, subjective factors should be completely removed from the college admissions process. B) Therefore, it is not appropriate to use special admissions programs for minority students to help redress an imbalance.
  13. Hi Erin, Could you please explain why (A) is the answer for this question? I chose (B) for the answer... Thanks, Todd The new contract A).... B)forbids the transportation union from striking.
  14. Hi Erin, Please explain this question below. I don't know why (b) can be the answer as well.... I. When a person dies, that person's brain waves, as measured by the electroecepha-lograph (EEG), no longer show a positive reading remain but flat. II. A positive EEG reading can be obtained from a bowl of cherry gelatin. Which of the following conclusions can most logically be drawn from the information above? A) Some changes in a person's EEG can be viewed as a signal of death, but life is not defined by a positive EEG. B) Whatever characteristics a human brain and a bowl of cherry gelatin have in common are important factors in life and death.
