  1. Here's a question. What would you do by giving GRE now? You'll anyway have to apply for programs in December. So I would say, take your time and make a proper attempt. (2-3 months of preparation should be sufficient for a good score). and btw, good score in GRE doesn't give you funding. That totally depends on your overall application strength. GRE is just a high-pass filter (answering your question in the signature) Now if you get accepted in Alberta, I think it's a pretty good school (and they've funding as well). Don't know anything about Groningen. However if you can wait, you would have a better shot at many other schools. I would personally advise you to wait, since the other schools you're plan for, Washington, UIUC and Chicago are great schools. Final decision, obviously, would depend on what exactly you are looking for, and whether you can wait a year more.
  2. If you're giving GRE in october, you do have enough time. I think memorizing new Barron's words for two separate times a day might be too much. The problem is not about the ability to process new things, but rather to retain so many new words. You should see how many words are you able to remember. Also try Guru's GRE wordlist software as an added revision. It helped me a lot. But overall your routine seems good enough for a decent preparation. All the best!
  3. Wow. That's a tough one. London School of Economics v/s Cornell. hmm. You know, it may be a better idea to ask this in the PhD Econ forum (even though it's economics, those guys know awefully lot about many things). Give it a shot there.
  4. Yeah, same case for me with Stanford. I had applied for EE PhD. Anyone heard from UT Austin??
  5. lol. I meant 'Georgia Tech'. Not Gergia. :-)
  6. Hi TM fellows, Has anyone heard from gatech for EE masters? I'm getting very impatient about the results. Also, how about UT Austin? Anyone heard from them? --Shri
  7. I think Stanford might be better, IMO. It's got a great brand name, and since it's in the middle of Silicon Valley, i think it will be better in the long term. But regarding the group sizes, my prof was telling us that during his PhD at Stanford, he was working in a group of 30 people. So yeah, in that way, Princeton might be better (though I don't know the specifics about it)
  8. Good essay. Will fetch you over 5. Maybe 5.5. The only problem i see is you should write a littlebit more. Maybe 1 para extra will do good. Also include how much time did u take while writing this one. I like your writing style. All the best!
  9. I think you have made a good attempt of writing an essay, but you have wandered off topic. Your essay is centered too much on 'Bad habits' and 'addiction'. You should have written more about how a good neighbour interacts with you. eg, he would greet you with a smile or a "hi!". Also, your grammar structure needs to be improved. Remember following few things, "Always try not to write 'so', 'hence', 'because' etc". By this I mean dont interconnect two sentences too much. It never sounds good. I would give this essay a 3.5 out of 6. This is because you wrote it off topic, take care. I think you need more practice to reach over 5. Also, write down how much time it took to write this essay. You should never take more than 40 min, for beginning. Also, in first 5 min, write down all your points on a piece of paper. It really helps you to organize. Hope to see more of your essays. Keep it cool and steady.
  10. how to get 5.0? it's quite easy buddy. All you have to do is follow these things, 1)always write in intro-3 paras-conclusion (dont think of anything else) 2)Decide what you are gonna write in exam. for example, use the words like 'in addition', 'furthermore', 'perhaps the best reason'..etc. You decide that you are gonna write these somewhere in your essay. it will be easier for u to concentrate more on the actual essay rahher than these side-things. 3)check your essay twice for grammatical errors. you MUST NOT make a grammatical error in exam. if you are not sure about a certain sentence, change the structure and write in the way you can. 4)dont try to write a hi-fi essay. no need. it matters only when you want 6 out of 6. to get 5 or 5.5, u dont need such things. 5)give suitable examples for each reason. thats it. i think u are on your way. write 1 essay a day. and post it on forum. finally, sorry for this late reply. I didn't have access to comp thats why. ('Hey!' means you should not write such things. You are writing an essay and are not in a conversation with somebody. take care. write like ... To sum up, To conclude, finally) shrirang
  11. How much time did you take to write this one? it should not be over 35 minutes for the beginning. I think you have attempted the topic quite well. i would give this one 4.5 I would like to give more but 4.5 is good for the beginning. always give your first 5 minutes to take points and write them down on the paper. it is very important. dont type anything in between. just concentrate well. you must do this in order to achieve good marks. best luck!! shrirang
  12. hi, i am also the one who had done the same thing. but i got my essay score, you see. it was 5.5 your essay will be scored whether or not you have pressed the proceed button. in fact i purposefully did not click on submit during actual test to get a few more cucial seconds. IT DOESNT MATTER WHETHER YOU PRESS SUBMIT OR NOT. trust me. and relax! shrirang
  13. Hi Yasser!, I just read that you got 283 in TOEFL. Congrats once again! You will receive the official score post after say, 30 days, i.e. approximately 4 weeks. Two weeks after your exam, ETS mails it and it will take arround two weeks to reach to your home. But now you don't need that, do you? ha ha. Enjoy! Shrirang
  14. Hey! What a remarkable score! Really cool!!! I am amazed that the university gave you scores so quickly! That's pretty awsome! Any way, hearty congratulations to you! Best luck for GRE preparations!! Shrirang
