  1. i thought i'd give everyone a basic idea of what my practice scores looked like and how i went about studying for the test. i originally wanted to score about a 650 for the schools I was looking at(make up for my poor resume). sept 04: kaplan diagnostic 570 (~96% v and 25% q) studied for 1 week (2 hrs per day) kaplan diagnostic 640 studied for 2 weeks about 2 hr per day oct 9: kaplan written test 620 (~96% v and 35 q I think) didn't study for 2 weeks end of Oct: kaplan CAT 1 ~540 studied for 2 weeks about 2 hr per day mid Nov: kaplan CAT 2 -580 studied for 1 weeks about 2 hr per day end of Nov: kaplan CAT 3 -570 next day: online test at gmat.com - 610(v-40, q-30) gave up studying until end of january, thought about not taking test feb 1 - 14: about 1 hour per day feb 15: kaplan CAT 4 - 570 feb 16 - 28: about 1 hour per day march 1st: online test at gmat.com - 610(v-35, q-40) march 4th: kaplan diagnostic 610 mar 2 - 8:about 2 hr per day
  2. q- 55% v- 89% thanks for the comments everyone.
  3. I just took by gmat and got a 640. i was shooting for a 650, but didn't quite make it. i'm trying to decide part v. fulltime at a school in the boston area (Northeastern, BC, Bently, babson). I don't think that my work experience is all that great (since 2001 - (on/off/concurrent w/ other work) web design, operations support spec(1 yr), editorial assist(1 year), systems administrator assist(.5 yrs)). do you think i'll have to get a better score to get in? i just found this website about 5 days ago... too bad i didn't find it 5 months ago. it probably would have help lots on the math.
  4. a machine has 2 components. each component works or fails. fail/nonfail rate are independent of each other. the machine works if at least one component works. the prob. that each part works is 2/3. what is the probability of the machine working? gmat 800 says to do the problem by figuring out the failure rate instead of the success rate, which can understand. how would you do it by going with the success rate instead?
  5. also, how many times can you take the test?
  6. any tips for the DS section? I've been studying since Dec, and these questions kill me. I was reviewing some old word problems that I had trouble with the other day, and I was able to get 90%+ of them right, so I seem to know the math. as soon as the questions are in DS format though, I'm lucky to get 50% of them right.
  7. can you explain why you did this? i get this part: 10C4 = 210 ways to pick 4 tvs out of set of 10, but i don't get the rest of the equation.
  8. I got it from a Kaplan practice test
  9. The answer is d - sorry i forgot a (huge) part of statement 2. greycellz, i don't understand how you got i'm sure i'm being dense, but i can't figure it out
  10. thanks everyone. i think i understand now.
  11. why do you do this: 5!/(3!*2!) I understand why you use 5! but not (3!*2!). can you explain? You're pulling 3! out of the group of 5!, but where does the 2 come from?
  12. 5/16 is correct. vakul, i don't understand how you did the problem. can you explain it to me? I don't understand your notation.
  13. a list contains 11 consecutive integers. what is the greatest on the list? 1) if x is the smallest integer on the list, then (x+72)^(1/3) = 4 2) if x is the smallest integer on the list, and y is the greatest then 16(x^-2) = y^-2 (sorry everyone, forgot part of statement 2... my brain is fried this morning) i think i undersand how you can get an answer from 1), but i don't know how from 2). can someone explain please?
