  1. I agree that you should seek out alternate methods of solving the problem to verify that no mistakes have been made, but only if time permits. The "kicker" is that the GMAT intentionally offers wrong answer choices that are the result of logic and math errors. Thus, they "out of their way" to deflate your score. A more fair system would exist if the "wrong" answers didn't look "right."
  2. I too make silly mistakes, usually with math. Sometimes, I rewrite the number/equation wrong. Other times, I misplace (-) signs or fail to carry number(s) to the next step. It is still early in my preparations. I believe that in my case and in yours, the remedy is acquiring more confidence by doing a lot of problems. Keep at it!
  3. Can someone show me where I made my mistake? If X = PB = QB, and AP = (1/2)(PB) = (1/2)X, and CQ = (2/7)QB = (2/7)x Then ... (100)^2 = ( x + (1/2)x )^2 + ( (2/7)x + x )^2 (100)^2 = ( (3/2)x )^2 + ((2/7)x + (7/7)x)^2 (100)^2 = (9/4)x^2 + ((9/7)x)^2 (100)^2 = (9/4)x^2 + (81/49)x^2 (100)^2 = (9/4)(49/49)x^2 + (81/49)(4/4)x^2 (100)^2 = (441/196)x^2 + (324)/(196)x^2 (100)^2 = (765/196)x^2 ((100)(100)(196))/(765) = x^2 ((100)(100)(4)(49))/((5)(153)) = x^2 ((100)(20)(4)(49))/(153) = x^2 ((100)(20)(4)(49))/(9)(17) = x^2 ((100)(4)(5)(4)(49))/(9)(17) = x^2 ((10)(2)(2)(7))(sqrt((5)/(9)(17)) = x 280 * sqrt( (5) / (9)(17)) = x 280(1/3) * sqrt( (5)/(17) ) = x
  4. I like GrammarBook.com Be sure to take their grammar test before and after the tips they have on their site.

  6. Let Ax = amt of liquid in bucket x Let Cx = capacity of bucket x Let Ay = amt of liquid in bucket y Let Cy = capacity of bucket y we know: 1. (Ay)/(Cy) = 1/2 , so Ay = (1/2)Cy we want: ((Ax) + (Ay))/Cy Now... 2. (Ax + ((1/2)*Cy))/ Cy If we know Ax/Cx = 1/3 , then 3Ax = Cx, (not solely suff) but if we also know Cx = Cy (not solely suff) then... Ax = (1/3)Cy Sub into #2: ((1/3)Cy + (1/2)Cy)/Cy = (((1/3)Cy)/Cy) + (((1/2)Cy)/Cy) = (1/3) + (1/2) = (1/6) Conclusion: Both facts needed to solve problem. General Rule: to solve for two variables, you need two distinct equations with those two varaibles.
  7. It's very apparent that "plug-n-chug" is the better method for solving this problem. By starting with the middle option ©, the solution was obvious on the first trial. I have an engineering U/G degree so it wasn't too hard to create two equations in two variables: T = (450/S) T = ((450)/(S+5)) - 1 (450/S) = ((450)/(S+5)) - 1 = ((450)/(S+5)) - (S+5)/(S+5) = (450 - 5 - S)/(S+5) = (445 - S)/(S+5) (450/S)(S) = S(445 - S)/(S + 5) 450 = (445S - S^2)/(S + 5) 450(S+5) = 445S - S^2 450S + 5(450) = 445S - S^2 450S + 2250 = 445S - S^2 2250 = (445 - 450)S - S^2 2250 = -5S - S^2 -2250 = S^2 + 5S 0 = S^2 + 5S + 2250 0 = (S + 50)(S - 45) USE Quadratic Eqn to get factors S = -50 or S = 45 S > 0, so S = 45 However, the solution takes precious time to acquire. Also, if you set up the second eqn incorrectly by subtracting 1 from the wrong side, (e.g. T - 1 = (450)/(S+5) ), the variable S leads to S=50, S=-45 Moral: Use plug and chug
  8. The truth should be your guide. The reasons why anyone wants or needs a MBA are unique. Do you know why you want one? In my case, management told IT Staff to develop or acquire management skills. Since my company pays full tuition, I have no credible reason not to go back to school. Age and length of time since undergrad are barriers but both can be handled. Maybe you need to do some introspection and look at your life and compare it to what you want it to be five years from now. Explore how the MBA, especially from your target school, can help you get there. My reasons will be different from yours. Some people have the following reasons: advancement, promotion, prestige, knowledge, and entrepreneurship (sp?). What are your reasons? If you don't know, maybe you should wait until you do know. My reasons have me extremely motivated and will help me succeed. Failure is not an option.
  9. Hi there! You and I are in the same circumstances. Get the MBA. Think you're too old? I am two years older than you. So... rest assured there is someone (me) climbing a slightly steeper hill. :) Go for it!
  10. My 0.02: First digit's set = {2, 4, 6, 8} has four possibilities Second digit's set = {0, 2, 6, 8} has four possibilities Third digit's set = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} has five possibilities Fourth digit's set = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} has five possibilities Fifth digit's set = { 1, 3, 5, 7, 9} has five possibilities So.... Total = 4 * 4 * 5 * 5 * 5 = 16 * 125 = 2,000 Assumptions: A. The first digit can not be zero B. Zero is an even number
  11. Can you tell me how this list was compiled and who compiled it?
  12. Hi! I got my undergrad degree in Industrial Engineering 1994. I went to work for an auto manufacturer as a manufacturing supervisor. I did that two years and a half years before transferring over to the corporate IT Dept. I have been a mainframe systems programmer for the past 7 years. I received a promotion from an analyst position to a specialist job after three years. We were just told a few months ago that IT staff should not pursue a technical career path. Thus, my expectations of receiving a well deserved senior specialist position have been summarily dashed. Apparently, our company is looking to outsource and offshore a lot of IT work. Thus, we were told to pursue career paths of relating to the management of vendors, contracts, and projects. Of course, we don't have access to that type of training. So.... my only recourse is to get outsourced, downsized, retrained, or shafted. I choose to control my destiny and to meet my company's cryptic career advice by pursuing an MBA. Also, like you, I have a business on the side. A few years ago (2001) I attended auctioneers college to learn a side career. It's a small family business that I enjoy. We have done five auctions and I have learned so much about business in general. I also learned that there is much that I do not know. :) So, an MBA will help achieve success on that front too. 13. Awwww.... don't be shy.... I don't bite.... not on first meetings anyhow! :)
  14. Thanks for the welcome BrazilianWoman! I will admit that I am disappointed that you don't have a picture in your profile ;)
  15. I am new here and I am very impressed with this site! I am surprised that it is not a subscription site. Erin could get 500 people to pay $10 a month without any hesitation.... I look forward to meeting you all! I am a 37 year old Michigan man seeking admission to the UofMI MBA Program. My U/G Degree is Ind. Engrg (3.2 GPA) and I have worked for my Big3 auto employer for 10 years as a Systems Analyst. I just found out that there will be no more promotions for IT Staff, thus, I am heading back to school! :)
