  1. Yes, wih a telecom degree from HUT (now known as TKK) you are more likely get a work in Nokia. But you have to learn Finnish, and its too cold up there! But it may be worth it for the free education you get, and on top of that, Finland is known as the most peaceful country. I am still in doubt.
  2. I had applied for MS in Telcommunications (Computer Networking) for Fall 06. My admission results are as follows: Acceptances: 1. University of Pittsburg - Pittsburg 2. University of Nebraska - Lincoln 3. Helsinki University of Technology (Finland) Rejection: 1. Clemson University No scholarships so far in any. Pittsburg is pretty expensive, but ranks better. HUT has free tution. Nebraska-Lincoln also ranks good. Any suggestions on selection?
  3. Hi there. In my financial assistance application for Clemson U it asks what type of assistance I require: Assistantship, Traineeship, or Fellowship. What is the difference between the three? Can I apply for all three?
  4. I had an experimental quantitative section at the end of the exam. It said 100 people would get $250 if the difference between their test score and experimental section score is the highest. Umm.. I scored 750 in the real test. I think i did better in the experimental one. Has anyone got the prize money? when does ETS give the prize, in October? What if somebody registers for the GRE just to get the prize ?? 250$ will pay for the $140 required fore registration. Just a thought.
  5. Two years ago I gave the GRE for the first time. I got - V:460, Q:760, AWA:4.5. I gave it again today and got V:550, Q:750, AWA:I think 5.0+. Would a third attempt increase another 90? I wish it would! Similarly in TOEFL I got 10 more points from 283 to 293 this time. Could anybody recommend some good schools for MS in telecom/networking. My CGPA is 3.33, Top 10% of class. Thanks in advance.
  6. Your introduction paragraph does not make it clear whether you agree or disagree on the given topic ! A good template is: 1st para: restate the topic / or express your agreement/disagreement. The first sentence is very important. Support with a few examples. 2nd, 3rd, 4th: elaborate on each example. 5th: summarize and conclude.
  7. I wanted to know the test lengths for CBT TOEFL, not the iBT TOEFL. I, however, found this somewhere: Listening: 30-50 questions, 40-60 minutes Structure: 20-25 questions, 15-20 minutes BREAK: 5 minutes Reading: 44-55 questions, 70-90 minutes Writing: 1 question, 30 minutes Is this correct??
  8. Although learning a foreign language in the country it is spoken requires travel abroad, it will be worth the effort as you get to interact with its native speakers. As learning a new language requires much practice, learning while practicing with native speakers will prove more fruitful than in the classroom. However, if someone is just starting to learn a new language it may be more convenient to learn in your own home country at first. One may feel less embarassed while practicing with other learners than while speaking with native speakers. Also it is easier to learn a new language with an instructor who also speaks your own native language. But once you are confident with the basics of the language, it is better to learn more in the country in which it is spoken since you get to know about different forms of the spoken language which may not be included in books and language classes. Even though travel to a new land has its own difficulties, you get to learn about a new culture along with the language. Learning about the roots of the language and the cultures of the land of its origin will also help in understanding the language more deeply. Travel abroad and knowing about the country and meeting new people there can also create enthusiastic zeal to learn more and interact more compared to what may be boring language class inside a room. Since the purpose for learning a new language is to communicate with native speakers, you get to practice with more native speakers in the country where it is spoken. Thus when learning a new language I would first learn basic reading, speaking, and writing in my own country for a year or so. After that I would travel to the country where the language is spoken to know more about the language and practice daily in real situations. This way I would effectively learn the new language.
  9. The TOEFL Bulletin says the TOEFL test is about 4 hours long. But I want to know how much time is allocated for the different sections of the test - Listening, Structure, Reading, and Writing? Thanks !
