  1. due to a manufacturing defect, each copy of a 300-page book is missing exactly one page. though each copy is not missing the same page. if the text of the book is only 288 pages (the other 12 are blank), what is the probability that any single copy is missing a page of text ? A) 1/30 B) 1/25 C) 11/12 D) 14/15 E) 24/25 MY ANSWER: B 1/25 ... 1 - 288/300 = 1/25 ... logic, they want the probability that any single copy is MISSING a page of text. so being that there are only 12 blank pages, my logic is that the probability is very low. therefore, 1 - P(having a page of text) = P(not having text) 1 - (288/300) = 12/300 = 1/25 THEIR ANSWER: E 288/300 = 24/25
  2. hi there .. i was just wondering what the best method to study for probability, permutation, combination would be are there some terrific websites out there for this material? have people uploaded some fantastic sheets for this material? any insight would be much appreciated ! cheers, phillip
  3. hi there .. 1) could somone please tell me which # gmat paper tests are worthwhile .. there are so many of them ... also, do people find that the problems from the paper tests are indicative of the level of actual gmat questions ... 2) i have a few weeks left to prepare for the gmat. if i were to priortize my practice, where would you practice from?? i have the following at my disposal - kaplan course book - kaplan 800 - kaplan mathworkbook - princeton review verbal workout - the OG - paper tests 3) also do people who have taken kaplan, find the CATs more worthwhile than the letter (A-F) tests?? thanks in advance, phil
  4. 4567 ... i don't understand the difference between the 2 explanations you gave ... could you possibly explain ? the answer btw: alpha will have eaten through 26.25 volumes, while beta will have eaten through 15.75 volumes ... alpha and beta will meet in volume 27
  5. hi there ... could someone please help me set this problem up ... seem very basic, but i don't know what i am missing ... PROBLEM: 2 bookworms, ALPHA and BETA start eating at opposite ends of a 42-volume encyclopedia set numbererd 1 - 42 each working directly towards each other. ALPHA starts in volume 1 and BETA starts in volume 42. If each volume is the same thickness, where in the set will they be when they meet? note: ALPHA takes 3x days to eat through a volume and BETA takes 5x days to each through a volume i was hoping that when one of you solved this ... you could set it up using a simple DISTANCE , TIME , RATE grid .. ie: DISTANCE TIME RATE ALPHA BETA thanks, phil
  6. hi there .. i am new to the test magic site .. where are you getting your questions from .. they are quite challenging .. but they are great ... please do let me know ... thanks , phil
  7. hi there .. where are these problems coming from? and where may i be able to "study" how to do these types of problems .. phil (ny to test magic)
  8. hi there ... my name is phil and i am from manhattan i took the gmat once before and did not fare very well ... i only got a 570 ... i have been studying aggressively as of late ... thus far, here are my scores: kaplan diagnostic: 660 powerprep 1: 620 kaplan cat 1: 540 my goal is 680-700. i have always been a bad diagnostic test taker, and would love nothing more than accomplishing my goal. my inital questions are this: 1) kaplan cat 1 ... i know that the kaplan cat's test much harder, is there any kind of translation i can do between this cat 1 and the actual test? 2) i have about a dedicated month for gmat studies ... any suggestions? somehow my verbal is better than my math. i purchased the kaplan gmat/gre math workout ... i was also going to give a second go on the OG by working through the problems by "category" and then "difficulty" ... i downloaded one of those excel sheets that break down the OG. if some of you out there is this wonderful community could pop in to say hello and also give me some advice, i would really appreciate it ... warmly, phil
