  1. yes... that should be a good starting point... however, if you are comfortable with all the GMATPrep Qs, then 47 will be piece of cake... i think Clinton has posted lots of Qs from GMATPrep on his post... http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gmat/57777-760-q50-v-44-a.html it will be my pleasure if i can be of any help to you... cheers!
  2. ok... so here it is... one hidden variable in the Pearson algorithm... so they are trying to say that overall score is calculated from intermediate score and not from scaled scores... if that be the case, then i think what Pearson says make sense... but.... let me try to explain in simpler terms... Q-IS: quant intermediate score Q-SS: quant scaled score V-IS: verbal intermediate score V-SS: verbal scaled score OS: overall score Assume Q-IS ranges from 60 to 64 for Q-SS of 50 and V-IS ranges from say 60 to 64 for V-SS of 36 and V-IS ranges from say 65 to 69 for V-SS of 37 (Lets not bother about exact figures, but the idea is that a higher scaled score would have a different exact score range. So if 60-64 of V-IS correspond to V-SS of 36, then its safe to assume that for a V-SS of 37, the V-IS range would start from 65 onwards) Case 1 (Friend 1) ***Q-IS***Q-SS***V-IS****V-SS*****OS ****64*****50*****64*****36******128 Case 2 (Friend 2) ***Q-IS***Q-SS***V-IS****V-SS*****OS ****60*****50*****65*****36******125 So OS (Friend 1) > OS (Friend 2) In this case, what Pearson says holds true... but the big assumption is about the interval ranges (interval with range 4). However, if ther verbal interval range is different from quant interval range... then... consider this case: Assume Q-IS ranges from 60 to 61 for Q-SS of 50 and V-IS ranges from say 60 to 62 for V-SS of 36 and V-IS ranges from say 63 to 65 for V-SS of 37 Case 3 (Friend 1) ***Q-IS***Q-SS***V-IS****V-SS*****OS ****61*****50*****62*****36******123 Case 4 (Friend 2) ***Q-IS***Q-SS***V-IS****V-SS*****OS ****60*****50*****63*****36******123 In this case OS (Friend 1) = OS (Friend 2) But we can't be sure, since we don't know: a) the interval range b) the intermediate scores Going by the Pearson stuff, Friend 1 would not only have quant intermediate score higher but also have the verbal intermediate score on the higher side of the range... so if the above (statement in bold) is not true, then consider this: Assume Q-IS ranges from 60 to 61 for Q-SS of 50 and V-IS ranges from say 60 to 62 for V-SS of 36 and V-IS ranges from say 63 to 65 for V-SS of 37 Case 5 (Friend 1) ***Q-IS***Q-SS***V-IS****V-SS*****OS ****61*****50*****60*****36******121 Case 6 (Friend 2) ***Q-IS***Q-SS***V-IS****V-SS*****OS ****60*****50*****63*****36******123 In this case OS (Friend 1) Hence, statement in bold has to be true... so i think, it might be that statement in bold was true for me... the above is based on assumptions... so the question we can ask Pearson is: a) what are the interval ranges for Quant and Verbal section? b) how does the overall score relate to the quant & verbal intermediate section? is it just summation of the two? and then again a range correspond to 700, 710,... But i doubt, whether Pearson would reveal this information.... seems like myself confused a lot... have i made any sense? don't think so... guess shld get some high energy drink... let me know your thoughts... but one thing is sure... u have done a lot for me... thanks buddy! do let me know in case i can be of any help to you, i have send my yahoo mail id in a private msg to you...
  3. thanks natedog... i agree with u... the best strategy is to let them find the answer... as far as we are concerned, to the best of our knowledge (and common sense), there is a discrepancy here (even without percentiles)... lets c what happens... btw, Pearson APAC has not replied to my second email yet...
  4. thanks natedog... i've also replied to the response that i got from Pearson, but no reply as yet. the Q still remains... lets c how it goes... and hey... there are 'n' number of examples... what do u say about this one? kk_del: 50Q, 35V --> 710 overall http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gmat/56311-kk-final-list-710-q-50-v-35-a.html?highlight=710 guess, pearson needs a good IT guy to resolve the discrepancy... any volunteers?
  5. hey, finally i got a reply from asia pacific customer service... i am still not sure about the score methodology... can u decipher the response... Hi! Thanks a lot for your response. But i am still unclear as to how the overall scores are calculated. Doesn't the overall score based on the scaled sectional scores. Your response addresses the percentile part but not the absolute scores. A higher scaled score (by definition, scaled score takes into account the level of difficult Qs answered) would mean higher overall score irrespective of the period. Isn't it so? If not, then can you please explain. Thanks a lot for yout time and patience. Regards, Saurabh Pearson VUE wrote: ... GMAT official score report is adoptive to the difficulties and the performance of overall GMAT candidates. Which means, we will collect all the scores who tested within the same period around the world and depending on the overall performance, we will determine where the candidate score stands between all those candidates. If the candidate scored lower than other candidates who tested in different period, but still scores reasonably higher than other candidates who tested within the same period, it will bring up the overall official score accordingly. This is to provide all candidates with fair, equal and accurate scores despite the difference between the level of difficulty of their exams. GMAT exams questions are chosen from a large number of different question pools and not all questions are the same in term of the level of difficulty. ... -----Original Message----- From: myemailid [mailto:myemailid] Sent: Date To: Pearson VUE Subject: Hi! ....... This is regarding my GMAT score which i took on 2nd Nov 06. I scored 50 in Quant, 37 in Verbal and Overall score of 710 only. However, my other friends who have scored less in Verbal section (and equal scores in Quant) have got an overall score greater than me. I believe, overall score (not percentile) is calculated based on scaled sectional scores. The higher the scaled sectional scores, the higher the overall score. But one of friend who took the test in Sep of this year got scaled score of 50 in Quant, 36 in Verbal (one mark less than me) but an overall score of 720 (10 more than me). How is this possible? There are people who have got 50 in Quant, 35 in Verbal and still 710. Please resolve the discrepancy since the website mba.com doesn't address the above query. Thanks ...
  6. i have seen the message... guess pearson in US is responsive... thanks a lot buddy!!!... i shall send the name and date soon... however, debarshi75 also scored 710 with Verbal 35 and Quant 50... that's strange... guess pearson's algorithm has gone crazie...
  7. i don't think Pearson would do that... if it would have done, it would have been stated on the website... to the best of my knowledge, there is no penalty on retake... i have got the official score report also... however, as expected, the score remains same... natedog: Here are some phone numbers. (see attached) the india number is that of a call center which i wrote about earlier... the guys don't have any clue... don't know who can address the query... since Pearson is not responding to emails too!... this kind of non-responsivness is typical of organizations who operate in a monopilistic market such as test services for GMAT!!!.. thought only microsoft was the only one...
  8. Congratulations! That's a great score...
  9. I had contacted the customer service center of GMAT in Delhi... but the guy didn't have any clue about it. He stuck to his version of percentile and i had a tough time explaining him the absolute score concept. Eventually, i managed to speak to one of his supervisors. Although he understood the problem, he was not euipped to answer my query. I think Pearson should be able to atleast provide a reasonable answer since the call center guys are not equipped to answer anything beyond stated in the website. do they have office in India too? let me figure it out and lets have this pushed from both the continents!
  10. AsadDelhi from delhi... Mani Jagathesan here you go: http://www.esnips.com/doc/a5ff9b71-a283-4fb0-87c3-20464969072b/set21-31.zip http://www.esnips.com/doc/b10c70ad-8e61-4936-b717-cf82db1b2146/set1-20.zip if the above links are not working, go to: http://www.esnips.com/_t_/gmat/?tab=1&page=9 there are many files there... several pages... see all the pages and u'll find other stuff too... natedog: 1) i have confirmed the friend's score... they r wat i wrote earlier... he took in Sep... 2) i took on 2nd nov... i don't know what algorithm Pearson uses but definitely the algorithm is counter-intuitive... and Pearson has also not replied to the email... its more than a week now!!! even though i'm a repeat customer for them, still they have not even acknowledge the email... has somebody cracked the scoring algorithm?
  11. i understand that the percentiles table may change... but my basic doubt is that if one scores higher on sectional scores, shouldn't one get higher overall score also? (irrespective of percentile).... as in the above mentioned case, i got a point higher in verbal... then how come my score is 10 points less... it should have atleast been equal if not more... the guide lists only tables and to my surprise... the percentiles for 50Q and 37V are the same as those for the table in June 2006 score report... ok, let me ask this question... how is the overall score (not percentile) calculated? .... my guess is that its calculated based on scaled sectional scores... if yes, then a higher scaled sectional score should lead to higher overall score.... but in my case, its the other way around... your inputs pls...
  12. hi guys... one of my friend appeared for GMAT between Sep and Oct of this year... mine and his scores are as below: ---------- Quant -------- Verbal -------- Overall --Mine-- 50 (95%) ----- 37 (83%) ---- 710 (94%) --Friend-50 (95%) ----- 36 (80%) ---- 720 (96%) Even though my verbal score is a point higher, my overall score is 10 points less... how come? i am unable to understand this... my understandig is that if one gets a higher scaled sectional sore (irrespective of percentile), one should get a higher overall score also. However, in the above case, the overall score is less... I took the GMAT on 2nd Nov 06 and he took in Sep or Oct of this year... Can somebody explain me how this is possible?... I have emailed the customer service of GMAT Asia-Pacific but have received no reply... Thanks a ton!
  13. hi guys... i decided to give GMAT again in mid oct after i had been rejected (post interview call) from INSEAD in last and third round of the application for jan 07 session... i have not much to de-brief about the preparation since i studied only for two weeks... but anyways would write what i feel might be of help to you... my earlier post is here: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gmat/49672-680-89-49q-90-34v-72-a.html What i did for preparation? Did OG 11th Ed... basically all the Qs of Verbal... just after attempting the Q, i read the explanation... this strategy helped me the most in SC wherein from the explanation i got to know many more flaws in the sentence which i didn't find myself at the first place... (sorry for this horrible sentence... i know i have voilated lots of rules!) Next i attempted GMATPrep... got 720... a day after that the first test... got 750 in the second test... post that, i did around 20 GMAT Sets... must for everybody... did around 4 sets a day... some of the given answers are wrong.. so do check the forum for correct answers... the last few days i gave GMATPrep about 7-8 times... basically, i attempted those Qs which i had not seen before... and i discovered many new Qs each time i took the test... About the test experience AWA was pretty straight-forward... two-liner for AOI and around six lines for the AOA... Didn't take the break and started with the Quant section. Got a very easy Q... by the time i was on the 10th Q... i didn't find the level of difficulty rising.. in fact, i was surprised to see such easy Qs and it made me wonder whether i am doing fine... but then i just attempted them... time management is important, since last time when i had taken the test, i had to rush in the last 4-5 Qs... this time, i didn't spend more than 2 mins on any Q... whatever may come.. PERIOD. didn't guess any Q either... but then a score of 50 proves that i got atleast 3 Qs wrong... u will not find the Quant section difficult if u r comfortable with all the GMATPrep Qs... Took a two minute break, and started with Verbal... i used the following strategy to note the time... time left(mins) - current Q.No 45 - 15 20 - 30 while attempting 15th Q, there should be around 45 mins remaining... on 30th Q, there should be around 20 mins remaining... please don't follow this strategy if you have an exam tomorrow... follow your own strategy to manage time and test it by giving atleast 5-7 Verbal Tests... i followed this time strategy in each of the GMAT Sets... the Qs were pretty straight-forward... around 4 RC... 1 long, 3 short... SC little bit tricky... no Boldface CR... level same as that of GMATPrep... do let me know in case you want to know more... cheers!
  14. A: "wasps living... society where they.." : where refers to whom: society or wasps? B: makes sense C: "society, almost all" : fragment D: "...almost entirely females": society is not females, it consists of females E: who is living? yellow jackets or wasps? IMO B HTH
  15. Because quotient is different when 85 is divided by n and when it is divided by 2n Ex: 15/4 has quotient of 3 whereas 15/8 has a quotient of 1
