phdaccounting12
For PhD Accounting admissions, is computer programming/statistical package knowledge necessary or is it something you can pick up during the PhD? If not, what would be the best way to pick up this information for a beginner? Thank you
taxPhD
Programs typically do not count on you having knowledge say SAS or STATA before starting the PhD program. Many programs have a programming bootcamp or class that you will take at some point. At the university I graduated from, the new accounting and finance PhD students did a week long intensive SAS class in the summer before starting the program. In addition, depending on your school as well, you may get some exposure to SAS, STATA, and R in your econometrics courses, especially if you take applied econometrics along with the theoretical econometrics courses. However, prior working knowledge of SAS or STATA can be a plus. In addition, the PERL programming language is becoming popular in accounting and finance to extract textual data or numerical data from SEC filings that are not reported on WRDS. So advanced knowledge of this could be helpful as well.
YaSvoboden
Tax described the expectations here very well. You are more or less expected to pick things up as you go. A good place to start on your own is a ucla website with a bunch of stuff for SAS and Stata. I am working on perl resources myself.
