PhD admission questions

Hi guys!

I would like to enter a top 20 PhD in the US and I am looking for the best way to do that.
I got into the two courses at the Barcelona school of economics: ITFD (applied econ) and Economics. I am now undecided whether to do Economics right away and then apply for PhDs or do ITFD and then Economics.
I would do ITFD and then Economics because in ITFD I would have the chance to get in contact with two very famous professors and potentially get letters from them. I should add that one of the two professors is strongly wanting me.
What do you guys think, can having an applied course besides pure Economics count in my favour?

I add some information about my profile, I did a bachelor's degree in economics at an Italian school getting 110/110 cum laude and the best GPA in a cohort of 150. In addition, I did a year of experience in a research centre where I co-authored a paper.
