I just cud make out that there are 200 nos. in total. 19900 was in the answer choices but i didn't marked it.:( as I guessed, I marked 20,000... hey Blase, earlier I had planned so, but had to bow before the vicissitude and came to USA.:)

thnak you all for the best wishes:) (samy_dg special congrats to u for a great score, i just read ur post) & Dimas, Danke schoen! hey cridamour, that wud be really cool if we both cud make it to IU. all my hopes are centered on IU Bloomington..I hv nt applied to any other uni. had only one option!!! hi apprentice, initially my verbal was equally bad. but after covering much of the word lists from Barron's I cud do well in SCs, analogies & antonyms...but for some reasons RCs never cud be my forte. On the actual test I got 3 Rcs, first one was short (abt 35 lines) and straightforward, covered Q11-13. second one was a looong passage (abt 100 lines) and confusing two. it was abt some author and how the media helped her fame grow. the third passage was right after the 2nd one, and i bacame tensed as the earlier one took almost ten mins, to read and answer 4 following questions. third was neat abt 50 lines, but i just clicked the answer that sounded good to me as I had only 5 mins to cover last 10 questions. surprisingly i got only one SC with two blanks. overall verbal was OK, not much difficult. but it was really tricky. though most of the words were from barron's and I knew the meanings of all the antonyms and analogy words, I had to think nice and hard, as the answer choices were pretty confusing, esp. for the analogies. Unfortunately I don't remember any analogy questions. few antonym words were deft, emanate, seamy..don't remember more:( so I wud suggest do ur word lists and side by side solve as many practice sets as u can. GRE-antonyms thread is really helpful if u r looking for practice exercises. as for the quant section, thankfully I didn't get any probability or SD questions. but lots of QCs invoving exponents, quadratic equations and mean-mode-median and basic geometry, 2 graph sections, 2 coordinate geometry - one regarding the slope. they had given 5 equations of line in ax + by= c, had to find out which line had the greatest slope. another one was about a circle having a center at (0,0) and two points (a,b) & (c,d) on circle, had to find out which one is greater, a^2 + b^2 or c^2 + d^2. one question that really intimidated me was given a set S =(1,3, 5,......, 397,399), how many pairs of p & t can be formed as (p,t) where p Thankfully I didn't get any unindentified section, only one identified research section, it was verbal...i didn't take it though. the order for other sections was V-Q. In all I prepared for 2/ 2.5 months. Started word lists from 1st week of july, started taking practice tests from two weeks thereafter. did all the exercises from Barron's, Princeton and Kaplan(except RCs) and referred to forum now and then. that's all from my side. wishing u all, the Best!!!

Hi all,:) finally I took my GRE y'day and got an OK score of 1400 (V 660, Q 740). My first reaction to the score was ambivalent:( . I was expecting about 700 in verbal as i used to get 650-750 in last days of practice. And to tell u all the truth, I was really nervous about the quant section on the test day . As it is, I used be never confident about quant section, because being a student of Literature, I have no background of math. Secondly, I always ended up loosing marks by commiting silly mistakes of calculation and I was not good at SD and harder work-time-speed or factorial problems. And guess what, I had to guess right on the 11th question, as it was beyond my capacity. (it was a combination of AP and factorials). So I was much relieved to see Quant score. And of course, this forum and all of its TMs, though indirectly, have helped me lot. Espesially I would like to thank Dimas, Parvati, manwiththemission2005, Priyankagre2005, manasi4gre, SangFroid, Xeley, Yasseramin, coolmavs, gre1600, ish and many more, whose discussions on SD, Probability, Factorials, Coordinate Geometry have helped me a lot. Other forums, esp. the one for GRE antonyms and analogies, were helpful too. Input's from Michael, seagull, Illusionz, preeti_skui, nirmalar, samy_dg and other TMians were enlightening and helped getting ready for the "real GRE". so tons of thanx to all!!! Now after a night(my exam was sessioned for yday afternoon), I think this score is not that bad and should not hamper my chances of getting a financial aid or a TA. what do u all think? (i am looking forward to doing Ph D in German Literature at IU Bloomington)

hey guys, I did the calculations by assuming "x" as the total volume. let me know, how do U find this. let the total volume be x. So, initially, a=(7/12)x and b=(5/12)x. then 9 liters are taken out. So now x becomes (x-9). so subsequently a = (7/12)(x-9) and b = (5/12)(x-9) but again 9 liters are added. so x-9 again becomes x. but as these 9 liters are added that of b, it becomes (5/12) (x-9) + 9. Now we have the new quantities of a and b and their ratio is given as 7:9 if we put these calculations in equation, then it'll be as: [7/12(x-9)] / [5/12(x-9)]+9 = 7/9 by solving, we'll get, (x-9)/ 5(x-9) + 108 = 1/9 by cross multiplying, 9x - 81 = 5x - 45 + 108 4x = 144 x = 36, which is the total volume. initial value of a=(7/12)x = (7/12) * 36 = 21

Hey Andrew, Good work on setting up direction for Q2...Small input from my side. Did calculations for the equation you mentioned. The value of x turns out to be 36. so the initial value of "a" is 21. (I did a lengthy calculation:rolleyes: ) ANSWER: 21 Anyway, that's very small part of work and you have done rest of things in a great fashion. Thanks for the help.

I think Shaghaitest is right. even if u change dimensions as for e.g. h=12, l=8 and b=9, the answer is gonna be 24. For, hight wise 4 cubes of 3 inch side(h/3 = 12/3 =4) will fit in, breadth wise 3 (b/3=9/3=3), but length wise only 2 cubes will fit in. (l/3= 8/3= 2 with remainder 2, these 2 inches will be unoccupied)..so the answer will be 4 * 3 * 2 = 24

well, let me try to explain the solutions 1. The first problem is of "combination" and not of "permutation" as the order of choice is nt important. So u hv to select 1 hat from 10 hats which is 10c1 and 1 tie from 15 which is 15c1 and 1 pair of shoes from 20. As, "and" = * and "or"= +, final equation will be 10!/1!(10-1)! * 15!/1!(15-1)! * 20!/1!(20-1)! = 10 * 15 * 20 =3000 2. A car starts from point "A" and goes 5 miles till point "C". Then from "C" it turns to east (forming a right angle) and goes 12 miles till point "B". Now we have a right trangle ACB with hypotenuse AB. rest u can solve by pythagorean theorem 3. Using simple logic, one can find out that if a= 0 then the right side of the equation is going to be 0, which in fact is not. So a shud nt be equal to zero. If any one of the rest of the variables is zero, that wud nt affect the right side value of the equation. 4. Mary has completed 3/8 th part of a mile. She needs to go still 5/8 mile. If for 3/8 miles she needs 9 mins., then for 5/8 miles ............. ? mins. by crossmultipying we get, 5/8 * 9 * 8/3 = 15
