  1. Thanks a lot, tkkoh, good points. I am interested in Strategy and Organizations, the field similar to IO in Econ. But I just don't like the atmosphere of Econ programs and that's why I wouldn't shoot a better IO program. Do you think a 3.5-3.6 GPA is a bad sign of course ability or a disadvantage when I apply? My current program is ranking 70-100 and that's why I wouldn't apply for top schools, what I am aiming for are business programs like Maryland or Emory, etc. More advice is appreciated.
  2. I am studying in a Econ PhD program and facing the prelim exam. Since I am gonna apply the business PhD in the fall, is it still necessary to take the prelim exam for Econ PhD? I can still get a master without attending the prelim exam, but I am not sure if not attending the prelim shows some disadvantage of me when applying for business PhD. In this program, I have a 3.5 GPA, althought not outstanding, but it still seems easy me for to pass the prelim as long as I work on it. I just don't want to waste like a month on that kind of stuff, most of which would be irrelevent to my future study. I would like to here ur suggestions. Thanks.
  3. Florida will gain another quarter-million jobs this year alone, many of them in high-paying fields like electronics and banking, making the state’s economy far more diversified than ten years ago. (A) high-paying fields like electronics and banking, making the state’s economy far more diversified than (B) high-paying fields like electronics and banking, and making the state’s economy far more diversified than its economy © high-paying fields such as electronics and banking, to make the state’s economy far more diversified than (D) such high-paying fields as electronics and banking, making the state’s economy far more diversified than it was (E) such high-paying fields as electronics and banking, and make the state’s economy far more diversified than it was The answer is D. Why B is not true? I think what it is comparing is the economy in different times. There is a "it was" in D, why does it need to be there? I am always confused about the use of "than", is there any way to clear it? Thanks!
  4. Thanks a lot for your reply, apropos. Actually, we have taken advanced micro, macro and econometrics in the first year. The department offer standard course training actually. I just doubt the quality of the course they are offering. That's why I think it's neccessary to get some training in graduate statistics and math course since I would choose econometrics or some empirical micro field. I think I may get a LOR from a professor in statistic department since I am gonna be ending up with at least two A- from a sequence courses of his. The reason that I would choose Agecon is that I want to avoid taking any macro courses again :yuck: and hope to have more applied courses in specific micro field. I also heard that Agecon PhD only cost you 3 or 4 years after you get a master degree in related fields. Thank you for your suggestions, man. Welcome to more suggestions and discussions.:)
  5. I am wondering if it would be helpful if I take some courses in statistics or math department, like probability course or regression something. Thanks.
  6. I expect to end up with a GPA 3.5 in a Econ PhD program after one and half years of study. And I'd like to apply for an Agecon PhD program in 07 fall. I plan to apply for the programs in Maryland, OSU and Purdue, Cornell, maybe UCBerkely also. My current Econ program may rank 70-90 across US universities. When I apply this fall, I am gonna get a master degree there, because a master degree is automatically awarded as long as you pass the qualify exam and take three semester courses there. But my concern is my low GPA and not much research experience (I am gonna start a project assisting an Agecon professor in fall). I am wondering if many "B"s in the first year's transcript would kill my chance of getting in a decent program. There are many reasons that I didn't get an A, which I think I deserve it. But this kind of explanation is useless. I just mean I would be able to qualify a much better Agecon program. The reason that I apply for Agecon is that I want to get standard training in Econometrics and involved in good research projects, mainly in applied micro, which I cannot get in my current school. I really aprreciate if you could evaluate my chance and give me some suggestions. And I am very glad to know people in these Agecon programs, PM me, please.
  7. I am not quite a research person but I like economics. I plan to go to consulting firms after getting the PhD degree, thus I think I might not need a prestigious programs. What do you think about the PhD programs in these two schools? Worth going? What can you do with a degree awarded by top 100 programs. Thanks
  8. I was told to wait for another two weeks for final decision.
  9. Very helpful!! Thanks a lot. Wish you good luck in your graduate study, lse-ug:)
  10. Is Real Analysis a compulsory course for Econ PhD students? It seems the answer is no. I have taken Realy Analysis but haven't read MWG and I haven't noticed the value of this course. What is the exact value of it? I would like to hear your ideas about that.Thank you so much!
  11. I see. Thank you! Maybe I will choose VT finally to pursue my pure economic study. Thanks:)
  12. Yeah,I still doubted the advantage of MS in applied econ. But Purdue's great fame really attracts me. They have only very generous placement information, both for MS and PhD. not easy to make the decision:(
  13. I am also an international student with a bachelor degree. It seems courses in VT are at 500 level while other Phd programs offer economic courses at 600 level. I am not sure whether it is worth going. Thank you. I think one of the advantages of going to Purdue is that I can apply for other programs freely after my MS degree. While in VT, it may not be easy to apply after two years of study in the PhD program. I am not quite confident about the "Transfter" thing... As a famous university, Purdue may offer more opportunities than lower ranked schools. And what is your opinion, notacolour?
  14. Econ PhD at VT (TA) Agri Econ MS at Purdue (RA) Which might be better? I prefer the intensive economic training in VT's PhD program but the university is not as famous as Purdue. And I will not find a job even with a master degree.
  15. I found a career plan on a PhD's website: Through my education and academic experience I have acquired a wide variety of skills in the domains of computer graphics, acoustics and scientific software programming. During my PhD research, I developed a novel technique based on the hierarchical radiosity method allowing to perform combined graphics/sound rendering at interactive rates. Further developments of my work are also promising, in particular room/exterior acoustics prediction and radiowave propagation simulation with application to telecommunication or high speed wireless local networks. What do you think of it?
