From my point of view it is difficult to discuss whether the knowledge gained from one’s personal experience or from the lecture of books can be considered more important. The consideration of this issue is partly influenced by one’s personal definition of so called knowledge. For me knowledge embodies all facts, figures and methods that are taught throughout schooldays, studies and at work. Add to this, knowledge is enhanced by parental education which endows us in our childhood and adolescence with distinguished attitudes and habits that influence the forming of our character.
On the one hand the primary and secondary scholar education provides a large variety of different kinds of knowledge – mainly derived from the lecture of books. This basic education evidently provides the foundation for higher education at university or vocational education after secondary school. Deprived of this schooling one would hardly be able to make a living.
But on the other hand knowledge gained from personal experience and parental education additionally contributes to one‘s ability to get along in everyday situations. For instance traits like open-mindedness and communicative competence are beneficial at work due to the fact that communication to spread every kind of knowledge within an enterprise becomes onwardly indispensable in today’s business community. These traits cannot be learned from books but solely derive from parental education and personal experience.
In a nutshell, taking into account the necessity to earn one’s living, I come to the conclusion that knowledge from books is of greater importance than knowledge gained from personal experience. However in today’s business community personal relations to associate partners are of immense concern. Those relationship cannot exclusively be based on mere scientific knowledge – personal experience and communicative competence are in this case of prior importance.
