  1. In terms of research, it is hard for me to get any of those chances because of "glass ceiling"(a term in sociology). I know only one fellow student who coauthors with a professor for a research project. I didn't think he got that because of his competency.
  2. Thanks for all of your sincere reply. The problem is that my program didnot leave me much room for maths course(I had 11 econ courses including one advance macro using the textbook by David Romer, 2 calculus & 2 stats courses, plus the rest required for my business admin degree). I aced in the math econ (the textbook is by alpha chiang, which has some chapters about linear algebra, matrix algebra) and game theory (both A+). Courses like real analysis is usually offered once a year. Also, the university doesnot care much about the econ dept despite of several good profs in the econ dept(two Phd from BigMac in Canada). They told me that I am the first one they had to apply for gradschools in econ in the states. They told me that I could definitely get into the three gradschools in Canada. Therefore, I am quite concerned about my chance of getting into the school with funding in the states.
  3. Objective: Phd in Economics my profile I am a chinese student graduating Dec 2005 Bachelor of Business administration, majoring in Economics from one university in Atlantic Canada. GPA: 3.7/4.3 Econ course GPA: 4.0/4.3 GRE : V: 580 Q: 800 AW: 4.5 Econ courses taken: 4 macro courses including one graduate level course using a textbook by david romer; 3 micro; 1 labor econ; 1 econometrics; 1 maths econ; 1 game theory( all round A level). Math courses: two calculus and two statistics ( all round A level) Two mgt science courses and two finance courses ( I do not know how it is related to my application I completed my degree within 30 months, got my last 26 courses done by half a year (six courses for two terms and 7 courses for two terms). TA in this term for two intermediate courses around 120 students (4 months) Research interest: econ development and macroecon NO research done during the undergraduate studies(It did not leave much time to do research with any professors within 30 months of undergraduate studies) LORs from two canadian professors who have a good alumni network with the faculty members in top canadian universities. Final list of universities IU, Bloomington Purdue U UC, davis UIowa Iowa state U GWU three canadian universities which rank after UT, UBC, QU How do adcoms value my early graduation within 30 months in my application? Or they do not like a workalcoholic like me. They only favor the most gifted ones. How is my chance of getting into these universities above with financial aid?

  5. Hi, could anyone give me some advice on how to fill out that statement? For instance, do I only need to show the university that I have at least the difference between the total expense and potential financial aid? If my uncle support my study, will I be excluded from any financial aid consideration of the university that I am gonna apply? Thanks a lot for any replies.
  6. Hi, I am gonna apply for econ phd in Purdue Uni, west lafayete. can you give me some advice as you are there? How is the funding opportunity there for econ phd? Thanks a lot.
  7. will my quant score in gre make up my defiencies in maths courses? My professor said that my quant score in gre did. Plz advise.
  8. No, I did not see that on the test day. Cause the software they used for test is almost versimiliar with pp.
  9. I prepared that around 12 hours a day for the whole month before that test. In the meantime, I was in the summer session with 6 courses in July when I started to prepare GRE.
  10. Going over the word list regardless which one you have now everyday in the week before that test. Coz I got nothing out of a word list.
  11. perhaps, it is 12 coz I scored 800 in quant section. Since it was over, I won't bother to figure out the correct answer for that. It was weird that I guessed three or four questions because I almost ran out of time to get that part. Anyway, I am lucky because I took that on my birthday. For the graph problem. I got a one long question, which is a graph that has the one figure for nine year each. It requires you to calculate the sum(taking absolute value) of decrease of 4 years from previous year. and sum of increase of 4 years from previous year (cause the shape of the graph is like a wave). which two year's (I mean the figures of these two years) difference is equal the different of the sum of decrease and increase? It really took me a lot of time to calculate that. Then, a line that pass through three points (a,0), (0,a) and (-3,-3), comparing between a and -5.The answer is that a, which is 6, is less than-5. I think I got the most complex quant section in my test. Anyway, the quant is getting tougher now.
  12. thanks, plazzain. I definitely remembered that it was the second time that you reply my post. Last time, I did not get my GRE test done. I am worried that my low verbal part will weaken my application to these universities. I did two semester calculus, two semester statistics and one semester linear algerbra because I was in BBA program. I had to complete a lot of business courses besides economics. Thus, it didnot leave me much credits for advanced maths courses. How do I deal with that? Thanks for any suggestions.
  13. It is my time to contribute something to this forum anto 1. salve: irritant 2. emergent: waning analogies: 1.dissect: specimen=anesthesize: patient 2. mitigate intensity SC section was really weird for me at that test. I got one word that I donot think it is on any word list: shrill Quant: two set (7,8,9,10) (25,26,27,28,29) the number of different sum when picking one element from each, for example 7+25 or 8+26 be cautious with the graph, it was not that straghtforward.
  14. I want to do a phd in economics. here is my profile: I graduated from a university in Atlantic Canada. My program is BBA in Economics. I finished my program within 28 months, which is normally a four-year program. Undergraduate cGPA 3.7/4.3 econ courses GPA 4.0/4.3 I did some marker job for one of a professor in some intermediate econ courses and I also work as a student assistant for the register office of my university GRE V: 580 Q: 800 (My first try after two month painful preparation) Dean's list and scholarship (20% of tuition) for two consecutive years when I was in that university My weaknesses are that I did not have any publications. Nor did I do any research with my professors. Here are the universities that I am gonna apply: UC, davis Purdue U, West lafayete Uof Tennessee NCSU SFU (canada) UToronto (canada) Will I make it? Also, please kindly advise me if I will be able to get any financial aid from the universities listed above? Probably, financial aid means much to me to get a student visa by the states because I am an international student from China P.R. Thanks a lot for any suggestions. By the way, could you advise me some safe schools, which are easy for me to get in with financial aid.
  15. is there someone who is gonna take gre on Sept in Halifax, Canada? Could someone who took that test in Canada this year tell me the difficulty level of the verbal part? Coz I am an international student in Halifax. Will I expect to see some words that are not on Barron's word list? How is the verbal part compared with PP3, princeton review and kaplan?
