'where' refers to a location near the equator; eliminate D and E eliminate B because it sounds like ur comparing earth to other latitudes eliminate C because it sounds like ur talking about earth's surface instead of the equator Answer is A; also 'at other latitudes' speaks to a specific point instead of just plainly saying 'other'
  8. 'were assigned' is past perfect tense 'river basin is' is present tense So the sentence speaks about Water Rights being assigned at a time water flow was above normal which results in droughts for the water basin. I eliminated 'so that' because 'river basin is' tells me that its still susceptible to droughts because the droughts are a consequence of high water flow. 'so that' makes it sound like Water Rights were assigned to create the droughts. eliminate B, C, D eliminate A because water flow is still high because it results in droughts River rights were assigned at the same time the river flow was high thus 'while' 'had... been' means the river still has high flow and as a 'consequence' it causes 'droughts' .... Answer E
  9. Can anybody explain why "less than they did" is better than "lower than they were"? I got the part of "Employment costs = they", but I don't understand the logic for were vs did.
  10. A. Even after Balzania began requiring surface mine operators to pay reclamation costs, coal mines in Balzania continued to be less expensive to operate than coal mines in almost any other country. (scope) B. In the twenty years since the regulations took effect, the use of coal as a fuel has declined from the level it was at in the previous twenty years. (use of fuel declining, this looks good) C. Mine operators have generally ceased surface mining in the mountainous areas of Balzania because reclamation costs per ton of coal produced are particularly high for mines in such areas. (scope) D. Even after Balzania began requiring surface mine operators to pay reclamation costs, surface mines continued to produce coal at a lower total cost than underground mines. (scope) E. As compared to twenty years ago, a greater percentage of the coal mined in Balzania today comes from surface mines. (this would mean an increase in reclamation since coal is reducing) IMO B

A. Until recently, the Inuit people led a nomadic existence, sheltering B. During recent times, the Inuit people lead a nomadic existence, sheltering. (should be "led") C. In the times that are recent, the Inuit people led a nomadic existence, sheltered. (out because beginning is bad) D. Up until recently, the Inuit people, leading a nomadic existence, have sheltered. 18. (A) The people most likely to cry when undergoing emotional stress are less likely to suffer from stress-related diseases than is the population at large. (this may be a benefit from emotional crying) (B) If a local anesthetic is applied to the surface of the eye, irritant and reflex tears are inhibited, but emotional tears are not. (this prohibits the good tears) © The chemical composition of tears that are induced by grit in the eye is identical to the composition of tears induced by emotional stress. (doesn't refute anything above though) (D) The concentration of a substance that the body produces only under conditions of emotional stress is thirty times greater in tears than in blood serum. (supports above) (E) Patients who suffer from a condition that prevents secretion of tears display a slower than normal physiological recovery from emotional stress. (supports above as well) looks like only B doesn't support the passage
  19. (A) hour, is on an elliptical path that orbits the Sun once a year and regularly brings it (B) hour, is orbiting the Sun once a year on an elliptical path that regularly brings it © hour, once a year orbits the Sun, regularly bringing it on an elliptical path (incomplete sentence) (D) hour and orbiting the Sun once a year on an elliptical path, regularly bringing it(asteroid is missing a verb) (E) hour, orbits the Sun on an elliptical path once a year and that regularly brings it (this would be correct if the word "and" is dropped) A and B are both grammatically fine, however with A the antecedent for "it" becomes ambiguous (asteroid or sun?) The usage of that clearly refers back to the asteroid's elliptical path orbitting the Sun and bringing it closer to Earth.
  20. looks like the OA is E let me try again (A) superficial such as when each of the three major networks (out because each is singular and broadcast is plural) (B) superficial, as can sometimes occur if all of the three major networks (usage of if and can are incorrect, should be if and will ie "if it rains, i will watch tv.") © superficial if the three major networks all (same as why B is wrong) (D) superficial whenever each of the three major networks(out because each is singular and broadcast is plural) (E) superficial, as when the three major networks each ("as" is used "for example" here)

  23. New items developed for automobiles in the 1997 model year included a safer air bag , which, unlike previous air bags, eliminated the possibility that a burst of smoke would appear when the bag inflated, and making an already terrified passenger think the car was on fire. A. inflated, and making (and turns this into a fragment) B. inflated, so that it could make (same as A) C. inflated and made D. inflated and make (make should be made) E. inflated to make i think both C and E are grammatically correct, but E changes the meaning to say that the bag made the passenger think the car was on fire.
