  1. dude... yes.. there are around 60 ppl in India alone... with their fav Proff as Erez Zadok and dreaming for the 3/4 RA positions he has :( thats one of the reasons am not going to Stony.... anyways.. if u r heading there .. All the best....
  2. my research interests are in OS, FileSystems (stony has more work going on in these areas... but too much crowd and their huge admits are not inviting .... in other words - "turn-offs" :) and stony has a crazy 12 credits/sem rule which is the final nail in the coffin ) yup dude... 2 years is atleast needed to study subjects at a masters level, and IMO we wont have enough time.. even then... i feel we wont have the leeway to procrastinate stuff :)
  3. thanks a lot calmlogic..... eventhough 12 credit/sem saves lot of money.. it rushes u thru the course.. which i dont want to do... infact i would love to study for 2 years... and give the necessary depth to my grad subjects.... this way SBrook is kind of unfavourable for me... and in general.. doesn't UMinn have a more brand value than SB ..... am also looking to do a PhD after my MS.. that way also.. i am confused which one to choose....
  4. guys, i got admit in both UMinn TC and Stony for MS in CS and in a dilemma to select b/w the two. Pros of UMinn : well reputed univ good research decent funding chances less intake Cons of UMinn : costly Pros of SBrook: my fav. proff in FileSystems is there good ranking /reputation for CS location NY Cons : too much intake less funding chances 12 credits/sem rule.. and everybody finishes course in 1.5 sem.. which i dont want to do... Plz help me decide b/w the two.. thanks a lot for ur efforts - rufus
  5. @ guolinwen... i dont have recordings.. stored ... because i unistalled the s/w @mona prometric centres are official ETS centre where u can write GRE .....
  6. hi ppl, got a 28 in speaking and 30 in the other sections .. material used : 1. cambridge guide for Toefl Test ---> its really good and useful.. and in that all i did was the 7 tests they give in 1 CD. 2. ETS free online test as a part of the registration package.. and there is a pdf from ETS that gives Tips to test takers... this should be more than enough.. Tips for test takers: 1.reading. writing, listening section: take the cambridge test and the ets one and figure out the type of questions where mistakes are made and practise on them 2. speaking section: take all the tests in Cambrdige test... and there they have option of listening to the recording... using this we can get a feedback of our performance ,, and try to improve in the next test...practise is the key in Speaking section; 3. Chose an authorised prometric testing centre,, as the amt of disturbance will be less there... Infact i even went from bangalore to chennai to write in prometric.. and luckily i wrote on a sunday where the only test that day was at 3:30 pm and we all started at the same time.... i finished the first two sections very quick.. and was the first to start the speaking section . I was undisturbed for the first 5 qns, in the speaking section and only when i was attending the last question, somebody else started their speaking section.... this kinda helps . the other important thing is to speak LOUD, CLEAR and SLOW but SMOOTH and FLUENT. this comes by practise of taking 5 to 6 tests... and improving upon each one... All the best to everyone..
  7. guys, Got my Diagnostic service which gives the results of how many I got wrong in the actual exam ..... Quants : 3 WRONG Qn 10 Level3 Qn 18 Level5 Qn 27 Level5 Verbal 7 Wrong 4 Analogies (This brought down my SCORE :( ) 2 Rcs 1 Antonyms
  8. the best way to learn barrons words is by grouping OR/AND forming sentences , For a word like harangue, there are two ways of remembering this... 1. associate it with similar words like - diatribe, tirade, invective ... 2. remember the sentence - the usual harangues of Adolf Hitler . http://grediagnostic.ets.org:443/basic/ ... here go to Enhanced Service .. which will help u to predict ur current level... and give u real questions that will be useful 1.5 months is good enough for verbal if u r time crammed..... study+revise is the only mantra... 3 hrs in the morning 3 hrs in the evening .... will do..... u can finish 50 WLs in 1 month and take the next 15 days for more revision..... If u have enough time u can split up as u like.. .and do Bigbook and other stuff to get more practise.....
  9. @Chowdary88 For Quants... the best bet to get an idea of the real type of questions is the PowerPrep practise set questions... and the GRE Diagnostic service....this give quite a few qns... that are good....barrons quants / kaplans quants and Novas quants all are really good...... plus practise on basic normal distributon problems and Permtuations and PRobability VErbal - barrons + big book + GRE diagnostic service qns + power prep practise questions ==> will guarantee > 650 all the best ... u have enough time... if u regularly take tests.. u can do it well...
  10. Thanks p001 . Got my AWA score. ... 4.5 .. as expected :)
  11. Thanks Sanjay, @rabab99 You can take the practice questions for RCs that comes with Powerprep.... that should clearly say which kind of questions u make mistakes.... analyse ur mistakes and make sure u dont repeat those mistakes on other passages.... this shld help in short term.....
  12. thanks my good old buddy... i think our dream of meeting in Princeton will happen some day.. :)
  13. Thanks Ramin, ur sample tests helped me a lot.... and ur advice on keeping the composure..... i would say , on the day of the exam , nothing matters more than that... @Nitin - thanks, i just did the power prep RCs, infact they are more than enough, totally u can get around 9 + (4-8)in the tests... so around 15 RCs, are good if u dont have time.. if u have... go thru BigBook RCs, they are supposed to be difficult...
  14. @Vinuharan - Thanks a lot @Coyote - Thanks dude for ur support.... Quants was a bit tricky infact.... somehow pulled it thru.... @prp_gre.... yeah.. thats why i am satisfied with score... usually ppl prepare anywhere b/w 3 to 6 months... and I have a job with 6 years of experience.... so makes it difficult to study.... RCs.. the only practise I had was the Practsie questions in Powerprep ..has 3 sets each with 3 RCS.. those 9 RCs are very indicative of the original ones..... DIs are tiresome and involve time consuming calculations and careful reading of the qn... PP1 : Q avg arnd 780 verbal 680 PP2 - Q 800 verbal 720 Kaplan only quants avg - 750 790 790 BigCd quants only - 600, 650, 700, the max i got was around 730 Cambridge Gre - q-720-750 v-720-750 I will be applying to ComputerScience - MS/PhD .. mostly MS...
  15. Hi Guys, Thanks a lot for ur help. This forum really helped me in getting to know some of the best people and in honing my skills. I am infact happy about 1480 as for the programs and institutes I am looking at , this score is competetive. I prepared for exactly 1 and half months.... and in the end.. couldnot finish much of essential materials like BigBook . My honest advice would be to prepare for atleast 2-3 months to ace the gre in a more splendid manner. Regarding the exam... all words from barrons...but RCs as usual diffy... and analogies too close answers.... to get > 700 here , BigBook is the key. Quants is not tough when given ample amount of time, but is infact hard when u consider the limited time available. Most of the questions I got were one of a kind which I had not encountered before, and it was like time consuming to get the logic. None of the questions were solvable before 1 minute and it turned out like last 7 questions in 6 minutes... had to rush, but the last portion of the test was a bit easy... yet had to guess for the last 2 questions due to lack of time.... Was really happy to see 800 for Quants....My best suggestion would be to practise as much as you can, using all materials available and MOST IMPORTANT understand the basics of all the concepts... There are infact easier ways to deduce answers and eliminate choices.... Thanks once again to everone in this forum ......
  16. Congrats dude..... I knew you would come out with flying colours... All the best for ur apping....
  17. can someone/Coyote evaluate this soln ?
  18. Hi Aughrasye, IMHO, any score from 1350 to 1450 is considered eqivalent of 1400 by most of the univs ... and this score will infact can never hamper your chances of getting into your favourite colleges...... you can peacefully concentrate on the rest of the apping process and someday we expect to see your .. "I got into my dream university" post.. .in the admissions forum :)
  19. Thanks Ramin, Good thing you cautioned us abt the panic/anxiety factor . Will have to do something to maintain calm and cool, the best thing would be to practise some simple Breathing techniques to calm down immediately.... usually slow breathing steadies the anxious mind..... I have anxiety disorder and I do meditation to try to lead a normal life... and Breathing techniques called Pranayama which is a part of yoga is sometimes the only solution..... Thanks for your forewarning .... guess I will have to double my meditation on the exam day :)
  20. @Coyote, E 16/21 ..... diff. to solve under gre time constraints, but in 5 mins yes... this relationship can exist this way let a b c d e f g are the 7 people a is a friend of b - group 1 - a,b c is a friend of d - group 2 - c,d these are the four people with single friends e,f,g -> e is a friend of f, f is a friend of g , g is a friend of e again -> group 3 -> e,f,g 3 people who have 2 friends probability of selecting 2 people who are not related = 1 from group1 and 1 from group2 OR 1 from group1 and 1 from group3 OR 1 from group2 and 1 from group3 / total possibilities 2C1*2C1 + 2C1*3C1 + 2C1*3C1 / 7C2 = 16/21 hope I have not missed any other possibility....
  21. Kudos Ramin, We all knew you would have a stellar score ..... and the fact that the first section turned out to be an experimental one is nothing but God's gift for your hardwork and dedication. Goodluck with your apping.
  22. @Coyote, third year? i was there 7 years back :) Thanks for ur wishes.... n hoping to do my best ....
