  1. What kind of salaries can you expect in these positions?
  2. How about Tufts? You can take classes at their renowned Fletcher School as well to further your international aspirations. Since you are interested in the private sector, Europe (unless its LSE or something really famous) might not help you land a job if you intend to come back to the USA. Private sector cares a lot about name so Tufts, Duke, NYU, etc. might be a good choice. You may want to work a bit to figure out exactly what you want. You should have a lot of options having the Chicago name on your resume!
  3. I'm going to Tufts. I think it's a good program, but am not prepping for a PhD. It's probably better than Delaware. Also you get good fin. aid.
  4. Do you guys know if the Tufts program is about the same or easier than PhD programs in the 1st year?
  5. I just found out Tufts sports nickname is the Jumbos. That sounds rather odd to me lol. The logo appears to be an elephant.
  6. I probably won't, but will consider it as the first year progresses. I'm not sure when we have to decide, but I know we have some time. Also, I'm not sure the 2nd year is that useful if you are planning to just get a job like me.
  7. It was by mail??? I have been throwing out all my letters from schools without opening them cause I figure they are all rejections.
  8. How are you guys saying it's not cheap? Assuming you got 65% tuition and the TA position, the first year comes to about $5,000 out of pocket and you can live in Boston for 9 months for like $20,000 or less. So total only $25,000 for the program and you clearly make that back within the next few years if you work. It's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things.
  9. I am 99% going. I got the 65% offer. I was also admitted to Washington's PhD, but I have decided I will most likely not pursue a PhD and Tufts will be my terminal degree. It's reputation is a major factor as I think the degree will be well respected in private industry.
  10. I would agree with you basically, but the same can be pretty much said for any field where it's hard to show any tangible results.
  11. Tufts says: "Applications for Fall admission are due by February 15. However, please note that international applications for Fall admission are due by December 30. Applications submitted after these dates will be considered on a case by case basis."
  12. Do you know what kind of jobs/companies Master's graduates there end up working in?
  13. I got the same offer from Tufts and will probably attend there. Tufts has a good reputation which makes it an attractive option. I would guess both schools are about equal when it comes to getting into PhD placements, but what if you decide against that? I have never heard of Simon Fraser outside this board so if you decide to get a job in the US afterwards, you'd much rather have Tufts on your resume. I know you said you want a PhD, but you might end up changing your mind and I don't see any real advantage SFU gives you except a little more money.
  14. That's a good question. I'd like to know the same. They do seem to encourage a diverse group of applicants though.
  15. I am not exactly sure. I have too many interests (which is one reason a PhD isn't a good fit for me, I don't like to specialize). Lately I have been thinking of being an economic policy analyst. Somewhere in the intersection of policy and economics.
  16. As the PhD rejections began to roll in, I was surprisingly not disappointed. I had already been having doubts about such a long commitment and the rejections were just the icing on the cake that a Master's degree would be a better fit for me. I applied to 2 master's programs. I've now been accepted to the 2 master's programs which I applied. I received a very attractive offer from Tufts today. I'm interested in how Tufts stacks up against other quantitative master's programs that I feel I would have a decent shot at, not in terms of PhD preparation since I'm done with that, but in terms of reputation. I'm interested in how it compares to programs such as Columbia's QMSS and Cornell's MA Statistics program. Would an Ivy grad degree from one of those 2 schools be significantly better than one from Tufts? Lastly, I should say that I really like economics so I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy my studies at Tufts, but I like statistics as well. I've never been the best at having foresight in terms of understanding the career options each university/degree presents so that's where I most need help in evaluation these options. Thanks in advance for your help.
  17. I've lived in DC, not Boston, but they are roughly the same in terms of expenses. It's not enough. You will need to have a summer job in something that pays like consulting. I lived frugally in DC and spent about $30k a year. Cut out the nice apartment and I still don't see how you spend less than $25K in a city like DC/Boston.
  18. Same here. I assume we are out. Seems they sent out a good deal of acceptances and I believe they like to have a small class anyways.
  19. Do you have any idea who they rejected already? I saw some rejects on grad cafe. Did they just reject the no-chancers or should we take some solace in the fact we are still in the pool?
  20. But Columbia only allows 1 app per cycle so if you've applied to Econ PhD there I don't think you can do QMSS too
  21. Me too except I'll be 28. I'm going to give up on the PhD and am looking to see what other career options I have. I want to do a master's in something either economics or statistics, probably.
  22. Anyone else thinking about giving up on the PhD? I think that is what I will do when/if I am shut out. I'm looking into quantitative master's programs that are good for the private sector like Columbia's QMSS or maybe NYU/BU MA Econ.
  23. Does anyone know? Has anyone applied there? I assume I'll get rejected by their PhD Econ program this year so I want to just tell them to send my app files to QMSS for next year. I would not use the program for PhD prep, but rather for entry to the private sector. Having a state school UG, an Ivy degree would be especially helpful when it comes to jobs (especially here in NYC).
  24. I am starting to think I won't get in anywhere now that BC, Hopkins, Wisconsin, Gtown have all admitted some but I haven't heard anything.
  25. Didn't they send fellowships a week or so ago so now they are sending TAs and I guess this is round 2? Will there be more?
