  1. Congrats Farnaz on passing IELTS. What did you score in each component? Why don't you share your experiences with us at TM.
  2. I'm an informal teacher of IELTS. I've got quite enough resources for IELTS preparation, with some that could be used for preparing for TOEFL as well. Those are for sale on my original cost plus a nominal margin (total may be quite low from Pakistan). Contact on Majid_Matlub@yahoo.co.uk However, free advice from my side is available but on TM forums only, not on PM, so that all TM members benefit from such advice. In specific circumstances, I may reply the emails.
  3. Thanks Erin. :) Always liked your open arms for visitors of TestMagic. God bless you. Long live TestMagic!
  4. Well mkopalle, Majid is back to the forum after good 8 months and agrees with you on your comments. Similarly, the thing that I enjoyed in class most recently i.e. today is something I think I should share with you. We had a new teacher today as the new term has just started. The teacher used the marker on the white board right in the beginning and then turned towards the class saying, "I'm sorry if its not clear. I'll practice in my office white board as I don't have much practice of this." My reflex action was, "No Ma'am, why worry? Your drawing is quite good." [^][^][^] [heartbeat] and she says, "Son, its not drawing, I wrote my name!" [:(!]
  5. [b)]I am not sure what is the number of this essay but I found it in POWERPREP. Please comment Music tells us something about a culture. What does the music of your country reveal about the culture of your country? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer. Music represents the state of mind of its creator. It has developed corresponding to human social evolution. It depicts the state of mind of the creator that could have been influenced by his/her social associations, environment, and most appropriately, culture. The music of my country reflects traditions, wars, religious devotion and profession of the people. Books reveal that my country has been a doorway to South Asian countries since 6000 years B.C. An archeologist reports that almost every shepherd living in Mohen Jo Dero at that time kept with him the oldest version of flute. Enjoyed the nature and played his flute all the day while his sheep kept on nibbling. Interestingly, this phenomenon is still there with almost no change. Only the configuration of flute has changed but the spell-casting tunes of the shepherds of Indus Valley still elucidate their love to nature and peaceful thinking of the people. Whenever I travel to the western provinces of my country, I listen to a very arousing music. Before asking to my music teacher about it, I could easily guess the relation of these musical tunes with the battles of gallant natives with the invaders. The music played in these provinces attracted British Army during its expeditions in the East. British Army officials found this music so arousing for the soldiers that they decided to add some local music players to their official battle music band. History clearly describes how well that music worked for the British Army. Religion is a part of any country's culture. "Qawali" is a form of music that describes the religious devotion of my fellow countrymen. “Qawali” is played and sung by eight or ten people in chorus. This shows the harmony and teamwork that is a part of our culture. Some forms of our music are associated with professions of people. In past two to three decades, music of our central province has become an interesting stuff to listen to. This is the set of specific tunes played and listened by the truck drivers that belong to that central province. According to a famous behavioral scientist of my country, this music enhances the driving intellect. More interestingly, the drivers who belong to other provinces do not like this music as such. This has become the representative music of a certain cultural segment of my country. Undoubtedly, music tells a lot about the culture even the sub-cultures of a country, but it needs a certain understanding. My country has got rich music traditions that are closely connected to our cultural values. If somebody has some understanding of our music, he/she can gain much understanding of our cultural values.
  6. I have just located another joke. Here it comes. =============================== Atomic reactor street, Science sector, Chernobal. My dear, It has been a very long time since my senses have exchanged messages with my brain to write a letter to you. You are present in all the four chambers of my heart and ur beautiful image is printed on the retina of my eyes. I want your musical voice to keep my ear drums vibrating like a tunning fork. I have grown your favourite roses in my garden so that their smell will keep on entering my nasal passage and the charming colour of their corolla reminds me of your cheeks and lips. The enchanting color of your iris attracts me like an electron which is attracted to nucleus but the fear of your father repels me with equal force. Yesterday ur presence in the party made my heart beat at the rate of 172 beats/sec.The velocity of my blood flow increased at the rate of 15m/sec. and became 80m/sec.Your personality attracted me like the centripetal force but the medulla oblongata of my brain compels me to convert this centripetal force into centrifugal force and now I am revolving around ur house like an electron in its orbit. Whenever I see your father a wave of fear having simple harmonic motion passes through my vertebral column and my heart beats are reduced to one half of the original. At the moment, a covalent bond having sigma orbital exist between us.But in the future I hope it will be change into an ionic bond. As to every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Therefore , I hope u too love me with the same magnitude of love. In the end ur affection is directly to the product of our love and inversely proportional to the square of ur father#8217;s hate. Your affection = (constant) your love * my love /(ur father#8217;s hate)2 EQUATION:- A=K L1L2/(H)2 Truly Your Gravitational Pull, Dr. Mad Pathetic Winner of Nobel prize for English literature

  10. Babloo and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandma's house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When little Babloo received his plate, he started eating right away. "Babloo, wait until we say our prayer," his mother reminded him. "I don't have to," the little boy replied. "Of course you do," his mother insisted, "we say a prayer before eating at our house." "That's at our house", :yuck::yuck:Babloo explained, "but this is Grandma's house and she knows how to cook!"

  12. Please see this image of an essay, Erin. http://www.geocities.com/toeflgroup2003/essays.gif This is what Butter and I were talking about. They have written an essay this way. Tino, this image somewhat represents my idea and as far I could understand, butter also meant the same. Do you support this?
  13. This information has been posted by Erin in another thread. I could not find its link so I am copying and pasting it here from my PC. The BANANA Rule: This formula is very helpful for people who need only to get a 4.0 or 5.0 on the essay. Although this formula may appear very simple, you can get a pretty high score if you follow it. This formula is intended for the body paragraphs of your essay, i.e., the paragraphs between the introduction and the conclusion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here’s the basic formula: Topic sentence + explanation + example + “mini-conclusion” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here’s an example of this formula: Topic sentence: Building a factory near my hometown would cause a lot of pollution. Explanation: Pollution of course is a very bad thing for the community. Example: For example, in my father’s hometown, there is a factory that has polluted the air and the water in his hometown. “Mini-conclusion”: So, because of the problem with pollution, I would oppose the plan to build a factory near my hometown. Here’s the paragraph together: Building a factory near my hometown would cause a lot of pollution. Pollution of course is a very bad thing for the community. For example, in my father’s hometown, there is a factory that has polluted the air and the water in his hometown. So, because of the problem with pollution, I would oppose the plan to build a factory near my hometown. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This one is one of the easier topics on the TOEFL, nothing too surprising. There are several other topics that are very similar, so it’s a good idea to get used to this type of topic. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Topic sentences for the body paragraphs • A new factory near my hometown would most likely cause pollution and traffic. • However, if there were a new factory near my hometown, it would be easier for residents of my hometown to get jobs there. • Finally, having a factory near my hometown would help my town earn a reputation as an important city in Korea. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Erin -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You should be familiar with the Banana Rule before reading this information. One of the most important rules on the TOEFL is this: A singular count noun cannot stand alone. What I say quite frequently in my explanations is this: If you see a Singular Count Noun with no determiner, it is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!! Both of these sentences mean essentially the same thing. There are, however, many "idiomatic" usages that do not follow this rule, and TOEFL will expect you to know them. I've been collecting these usages for a while now. Here's what I have: according to legend arm in arm, hand in hand at home, at work, at school, at church, at camp at lunch, out to lunch, for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, etc. at night at sea at sea level at sea, to sea attend school, college, university by car, by bus, by train, by airplane, by boat, etc. by day, by night by means of, by use of day after day, week after week, month after month, etc. from top to bottom go to sleep, go to bed in class, out of class, after class, before class, to class, etc. in court, in prison, in bed in hand, on bended knee, on hand, at hand in office, of office in orbit in school, at school, to school, from school, after school, etc. inch by inch, mile by mile job titles: poet, manager, head, author, sculptor, secretary, owner, founder, president, photographer, choreographer, painter, etc. kind of guy, sort of thing, type of car measurements: in area, in height, in distance, in length, etc. on foot on land part of, as in x is part of y. For example, oxygen is part of water, memory is part of learning, etc. per: We do NOT use a determiner after per. For example, we say miles per hour, times per day, etc. subject to arrest, to fine, to deportation, etc. tools: with hammer and saw, with knife and fork, with knife in hand
