  2. Scott reached the (A) South Pole by the time (B) Amundson did, but found that his rival had beaten him © by a matter of a (D) few days. ==> B. BUT how to correct it??? By the time = when or what??? Can you please solve this and correct the mistake??? Thanks a lot!
  3. 20. While studying the chemistry (A) of human body (B), Dr. Rosalyn Yalow won a Nobel Prize for the research she conducted on © the role of (D) hormones. B??? Thanks!
  4. My GRE score is too low - 510 V and 490 Q. I'm from Asia and English is not my mother tongue, nor is it the official language here. What's more, due to too hard a work schedule, I couldn't get more than 2 weeks to study for GRE. I took TOELF International in August, 2003 and I got 633 as total score and 6 as TWE. I'm planning to do M.Sc in Economics but now chances are so slim. Does any college in the USA accept such a low GRE score? I've received the letter from the scholarship sponsor informing us of being selected but it seems that with the low GRE scores, the placement staff of the sponsor agency will not succeed in persuading the colleges to accept me. So sad, so disappointed. If you know anything about the application process or anything relating to admission, please explain to me. Thanks a lot!
  5. i have just received the scores, which made me so sad. I got as low as 510 for V and 490 for Q. I dont know if I will get admitted or given a visa with these shamefully bad scores. Due to too hard a work schedule, I could not prepare enough. I had precisely 2 weeks to prepare, so I could not do much on the test. I have a TOEFL score of 620 and I dont know if it can partly make up for the low GRE scores. I am planning to do M.Sc in Economics. Please help me. Please tell me sth about this situation. Thanks a millions
  6. i also had very low scores, V510 & Q490. I had only 2 weeks to prepare coz I had too gruesome a work schedule, working night and day. before that I had no idea what GRE is and is for. I dont know if I will get admitted or be given a visa. I had had taken TOEFL and got 620. I dont know if TOEFL can make up for a low GRE score, in a small part, in anyway. please help me now. I am in dire straits and badly neer your help and info. thanks a million. I am planning to to M.Sc in Economics
  7. One more word concerning the GRE and TOEFL: Do you know what score they require of a person seeking a scholarship to study in the USA? As far as I understand, it seems they will screen a wide range of scores achieved by the applicants, then single out the highest ones, and this looks logical, doesn't it?
  8. Oh, you've all been here for TOEFL and GRE, haven't you? I'm also a Vietnames guy and like some of you here I took TOEFL and GRE at Hanoi Hilton Opera Hotel on Oct. 18th and Oct. 25th respectively. Like you, I had a couple of problems with GRE just because I didn't have enough time to put into preparing for the test. Not until 20 days before the GRE test date was I informed that I would take GRE! And that amount of time wasn't not very much at all and I couldn't do anything for practice. Only reading through strategies and reviews of vocabulary and math took me roughly 15 days! In just 8 days, I devoured just a little more than half of the 1365 GRE word list! Luckily enough, I did have those words that I learnt by heart on the test day and I would say that I completed almost all of the questions for Antonyms, Sentence Completion and Analogy but the Reading was a real problem for me. When starting the Reading, it was only about 5 minutes left for the whole Verbal Ability section. So I couldn't do anything but guessed and moved on! I just chose A and gave that for all of the Reading questions from beginning to end! The Writing was a disaster for me, for I couldn't come up with clear ideas to work on, even though I spent all 5 minutes, as advised, on planning for the essays. The first one I chose was about the significant advancement of fields of study made possible by incorporating knowledge and experience outside of the field of study. Rather hard, I must say, given that I didn't put any time into writing practice. I just convinced myself that I would do it nicely but the essay wasn't just a piece of work on word choices and grammar! It also tested the ability to organize ideas, support them with clear examples and make conclusions! So this part was definitely a nightmare for me. The second essay - Argument - asked me to work on a case involving the mammals destroyed over the course of thousands of years on the Islands. It was also very hard, so much that I kept on writing on and on just to beat the time and without knowing if I was going on the right track! In short, the two essays, in my own assessment, would give me no more than 3 per essay! Too dissappointed! Now it's time I turned to TOEFL. To tell you the truth, TOEFL held on Oct. 18th was more of a nightmare for me than a nice experience. Just as the test began, I suddenly found myself completely sick, feeling like vomitting, shivering but sweating all over even though the room temperature made most of the people a little cold! So I would read that I had blown the whole listening and writing sections of the test. So sad and infurious! But hopes are not all over yet because I also took TOEFL International on August 23rd but haven't received the score yet. So I requested them to have the higher score in place of the lower score that I would get from the "problem" TOEFL on Oct. 25th. At the moment, I'm still waiting for the score of the August 23 TOEFL test. I don't know how high the score was and it's really difficult to guess. The first time I took TOEFL was about in May and I got 580 scores, and now I hope I would get higher on the August test. I think that the key to success on either TOEFL or GRE is your devotion to the test preparation in terms of your time, efforts, practice and attitude. Thanks and back to you guys later!
  9. A friend of mine also has this problem: She did make a money transfer for ETS in the U.S.A., but got nothing in return. She was so worried until a few days earlier when she informed me of calling to ETS, knowing that her name was on the list for Oct 18. As a result she may go to the testing center on the test day, without a permission ticket. So you should have it a try. Another option: you may call IIE in Hanoi one or two weeks before Oct 18, because at that time they will have the list for the test day. HTH. BTW, I'm going to take for a TOEFL on Oct 18, too. How about your preparation? Hi DreamComesTrue, first of all I wish your dream will come true as you take the TOEFL Int'l on the upcoming Oct. 18th. in Hanoi. I'm also from Vietnam and on this Oct. 18 I'm going to Hanoi to take the test. I have previously taken the TOEFL Institutional but no International yet. So I don't know if there is going to be any big difference between the two tests, i.e level of difficulty, length, etc. What's your target score this time?
  10. I graduated about 7 years ago, so I forget almost everything about math now. I have gone through all of your advice about preparing for GMAT and see that all of you guys have planned well ahead to take the test. So you have enough time to prepare and that is good. For me, the situation is much worse. I had never intended to take it until now, when they informed me that I would have to take GMAT or GRE in October of this year. There is not much time at all between now and the test date and I have lost all math formulas and things like that. What should I do now to best prepare for the test while I have so little time? Focusing on formulas? Doing the practice tests? Focusing on essays to improve the scores overall? Or what? I would be grateful for your advice and help. Thank you. P/S: As advised by Erin, I have bought GMAT Kaplan 2003 together with a CD that comes with the book. What else should I invest more?
  11. Suppose you have a total of 140 questions (50 Listening, 40 Grammar and 50 Reading) to answer in the PBT and you have a goal of scoring no less than 600 scores, approximately how many correct answers in total do you have to get to achieve that score? If each correct answer carries the same weight, then it will be easy to calculate but it seems that is not the case??? Last time, I got 53 in Listening, 63 in Grammar and 58 in Reading for a score of 577. I couldn't work out a system for relating the correct answers to the score I got. Anybody knows?
  12. A few months ago, I registered online to take the PBT in Hanoi and I succeeded in getting my registration processed and approved. About over 3 weeks ago, I received from the USA a PhotoFile Record plus Admission Ticket. And that wasn't any surprising in anyway. However, what puzzled me the most has been the Invoice, in which they requested me to FILL IN THE LOWER PORTION OF THE INVOICE, TEAR IT APART, ENCLOSE PAYMENT OF USD 130 WITH IT, PUT BOTH OF THEM IN THE ENVELOP PROVIDED and MAIL THEM BACK TO THE ETS at its address provided on the envelop. I don't know what to do with this, because I supposed I have paid them by credit card already and that I have received the PhotoFile Record and Admission Ticket means I don't have anything else to do with payment. Can anyone explain what this situation means?
  13. Me too but I have a bit of a problem at the moment. A few months ago, I registered online to take the PBT in Hanoi and I succeeded in getting my registration processed and approved.
