  1. Scientists have determined that an effective way to lower cholesterol is to eat three servings of whole grains every day. Studies have shown that the cholesterol levels of people who did so were significantly lower after six months than were those of people who did not, even though the cholesterol levels of the two groups had been the same before the studies began. Clearly, eating whole grains can have an appreciable effect on cholesterol levels. The answer to which of the following questions, if true, would be most useful in evaluating the claim about whole grains above? (a)Is it realistic to expect people to eat three servings of whole grains per day? (b)Were the two groups of people in the study involved in the same exercise program? ©Can the same drop in cholesterol be achieved through medication? (d)Did the study continue to track the subjects beyond six months? (e)Are most consumers aware of the different between whole grains and processed grains? Folks please help. Can't I divide the eqn. in the question by 'y': => 6x = (x^2)+9 => (x-3) ^ 2 = 0 => x = 3 ?? and since the statements 1 & 2 provide info only about 'x' and since the value of 'y' is unknown I went for E. But OA is ..

  6. In the XY-plane, does the line with equation y=3x+2 contain the point (r,s) ? (1) (3r+2-s)(4r+9-s) = 0 (2) (4r-6-s)(3r+2-s) = 0 Considering both statements, we can deduce that 3r+2-s = 0. But how do we get the other equation to find the values of r & s ? Any idea folks ?? Thanks.
  7. One automobile manufacturer has announced plans to increase the average fuel efficiency of its SUVs by 25% over the next 5 years, amounting to roughly 5 miles per gallon, and representing the first significant change in the fuel efficiency of any class of passenger vehicle in almost 2 decades. 8. Folks, I have attached the screenshot of the question. I still don't understand the scenario when x^2 Thanks.
  9. I am still not getting this. By stmt 2: t - r = t - (-s) t - r = t+s r+s = 0 We can conclude that the above can be true only if r = -s or r = s = 0. But the number line shows a different perception. Is the moral of the story - don't predict anything from the diagram ??
  10. Folks, I am staring this thread to arrive at the best possible timing strategy for the verbal section. 41 questions .. 75 minutes. Below is the strategy that I have been using for a while but wanted to learn better time management capabilities for the V section. 1st 16 questions - > 30 min. Next 14 questions -> 27 min. Last 11 questions - > 18 min. I somehow manage the time for the 1st 16 Qs but unable to manage for the next 14qs and hence the last 11. Any advice would help folks. Thanks.
  11. Calorie restriction, a diet high in nutrients but low in calories, is known to prolong the life of rats and mice by preventing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. A six-month study of 48 moderately overweight people, who each reduced their calorie intake by at least 25 percent, demonstrated decreases in insulin levels and body temperature, with the greatest decrease observed in individuals with the greatest percentage change in their calorie intake. Low insulin level and body temperature are both considered signs of longevity, partly because an earlier study by other researchers found both traits in long-lived people. If the above statements are true, they support which of the following inferences? (A) Calorie restriction produces similar results in humans as it does in rats and mice. (B) Humans who reduce their calorie intake by at least 25 percent on a long-term basis will live longer than they would have had they not done so. © Calorie intake is directly correlated to insulin level in moderately overweight individuals. (D) Individuals with low insulin levels are healthier than individuals with high insulin levels. (E) Some individuals in the study reduced their calorie intake by more than 25 percent.

  19. Because of rising costs, United Shipping Company raised its rates by ten percent last year. Many of its customers balked at the increase, however, and turned to a rival company whose rates were lower. In response, United Shipping Company began offering a package of services for a single rate that, though high, is still lower than the combined rates of the individual services. Officers of the company claim that this move will recoup the company's lost profits. Which of the following, if true, provides the best basis for the officers' claim? (a) United Shipping will aggressively advertise the new package of services. (b) United Shipping's rival does not offer some of the services included in the package. © Marketing studies have shown that many of United Shipping's former customers would prefer a combined rate for their various shipping services. (d) United Shipping does not already offer all the services separately. (e) No other shipping company offers the same package of services as United Shipping. OA Folks, I opted for E and that was incorrect. Any idea why E is incorrect.
