  1. :ARGUMENT 9 - The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University. "Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors." words:502 time:0:29:07 date:2006-7-10 In this memo, the author claims that Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors. However, I found that this conlusion is groundless and unconvincing for the readers, as there are not any correlation between the author's the conclusion and his evidence. Therefore, I think it is not right for the reader to believe what the author claims. First of all, whether getting a jobs successfully or not has many factors, and the most important factors are a student's capability of working, a student's characteristics, and the present economical environment. And a student's academic performance is not the only factor affecting students' getting jobs. It is quite likely that the area of the Alpha University has a better economical environment and it would be easy for the university students there to find jobs. Also the students in Alpha University may very well be better than the students in Omega University, therefore, it is not surprising that the Alpha University students can find jobs more easily. Another possibility is that Omega University(OU) is just an arts school, while Alpha University(AU) is a technological school, thus it would be quite natural foro the AU's students to find jobs, because the needs for the technology students are higher than arts students in most cases. Also, the author does not provide enough information on the students' performances academically, because the increase in the grades of the students could be the results of hard working of the students. Therefore, it is not surprising that the students can get a higher score than before. In this case, it is groundless for the potential emploers to believe the grades at OU are inflated, and it is unfair for the students in OU to be treated this way. So there should be more detailed evidence to support the potential employers' beliefs, otherwise it would be unconvincing to me. Thirdly, there is not enough evidence supporting that the professors assign higher grades that the students do not deserve. Because as I mention above, it is likely that the increase in the grades is the result of harder working and better academical performances of the students, and getting the higher grades is the natural results of the students in OU. To support the author's claim, we need more detailed information on the students' academical performances, and enough evidence that verify that professors in OU do give the poor students better grades which they do not deserve. In sum, in the memo, to support the author's conclusion to terminate the student evaluation of professors, the author is supposed to provide more convincing information and detialed evidences on his supporting ideas. As finding jobs successfully have many factors, it would be hasty to think only academical performances matter. Also if the author can not provide any information on the students' real learning situation, it would be unfair to think that their grades are inflated. All in all, the author's conclusion is unconvincing and groundless, and I need more evidences and information to be convinced.
  2. ISSUE 11 - "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems." words:593 time:0:43:18 date:2006-7-10 The speaker thinks that the universities in all the nations should engage students in the process of solving the persistent social problems. However, when this comes to specific situations, it may not be so appropriate as the speaker claims. Because we need to think about the functions of the universities specificly, and the detailed situations of the persistent social problems. It is true that universities should engage students in the process of knowing the present persistent social problems, however, whether the universities can solve these problems is unknown, as the world's most persistent social problems are not formed in one day, which can be so complicated that they are beyond the capabilitiy of the universities, because the universities may not be so mature to do this. Besides, even the universities can manage to solve these problems, the results may not be so expected, as solving these social problems not only needs theoriotical knowledges, but also the real experiences which are what the universities lack. Nevertheless, it is quite likely that the universities may spend too much time and energy in solving these problems unsuccessly. In this case, the universities may waste the resourses and the precious people's talents. As the world's most persistent social problems may not be as easy as the junior high's maths courses, I think it may be more appropriate for the nations to establish the specific research centers or institute to solve these problems. For one thing, these centers or institute can have more experienced people who are more familiar with the present situation, and this in turn can simulate the jobs demand in the society. For another, to have the specialists to solve these problems would be more efficient, and this is what a nation will be pleased to see. Also, in this world, different nations have different issues. For example, the social problems in the middle east are not the same as the poverty problems in India, and the problems in the Africa differ a lot from the problems in Japan. Therefore, we need to consider different problems differently, and it would be difficult for the unversities to solve the problems that have nothing to do with the situation in which they live. Moreover, solving these problems would be not so efficient as the nation expects. Addmitedly, universities should establish some courses that concerning the world's most persistent social problems, so that the students can learn the present situation, and this is good for the students themselves. Also learning the present situation and trying to solve these problems may help the students develop the critical thinking and the capability of solving practical problems, and this is one of the aims of the unversity education. Therefore, when it comes to solving the social problems, it would be more appropriate for the special reseach centers to do this. While these problems can also provide the opportunities for the students to practise in the universities. In the final analysis, as the world's most persistent problems may not be so easy as we expected, and the universities may not be mature enough to solve these problems, it would be wiser for the nations to establish the special research centers to learn the problems systematically and specifically in details and solve these problems expectedly. And this is what a nation would be glad to see. Meanwhile, the universities can provide the problems for the students, so that they can get to the front line of the present situation and they can have the opportunity to practise, which is good for the students' own development.

ISSUE 36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries." words:647 time:0:38:24 date:2006-7-7 The speaker claims that only people live after those great people can decide the greatness of individuals, and the greatness of the individuals is not decided by their contemporaries. However, I think the speaker's claim is to some extent extreme, as it is not necessarily the case that the contemporaries living with the individuals cannot judge or discovery the greatness of an individual. It is true that there are some individuals whose greatnesses were not recognized immediately by their contemporaries. And look back our history, the cases are not rare. For example, during the lifetime of the great lengendary paiter Vincent van Gogh, people could hardly realize how great his works are, and Vincent spent his whole life striving for selling his works. From this point of view, if the greatness needs to be recognized or accepted or decided by the contemporary public, it is, to some extent, difficult. Because for one thing, the really great individual's mind and works are beyond when he was living, and the way they conceive things is not the same as an ordinary people. Therefore, it is understandable that their works could not be accepted by the contemporary majorities. And only after some time did their greatnesses get decided and their works become the true treasure of human beings. However, there are some individuals whose greatnesses get decided by their contemporaries. And there are many examples about this case too. Take Einstein for example, during his lifetime, he was recognized as the greatest science, and he also won the Nobel Prize for his outstanding research of the photoelectrics. Also, the great German composer Richard Wagner was recognized as the world's greatest talent during his lifetime by his contemporaries. These individuals creat what is great for the contemporaries, and were recognized then. One of the reasons that can explain the phenomenon is that what these individuals did had everything to do with the contemporary life of the people. Their works have very close connection to the life of others. Because as we all know, Einstein's research of photoelectrics was the foundation of the modern physics which were developing very fast then, and Richard Wagner's The Lord of Ring trilogies were the top opera in the world during that that. Therefore, these people's greatnesses could be decided immediately, as they have the direct impact on the time when they were living. In our modern world, as the fast development of the contemporary technology and science, we are more capable of getting the access to the information that we want. And as the deleopment of the democratic and the systems of the world, great individuals are more encouraged than ever before, and many countries are trying the utmost to hold the talent people in their countries. And the individuals' devotions to the their realms are greatly encouraged. Therefore, it is becoming much more possible that the works and achievements of these individuals can be recognized very soon by the contemporaries, who would be very likely to make these works into application, which, in turn, will speed up the development of the world. Admittedly, if our contemporaries want to discovery and decide where the greatness is, there should be some policies and systems to support this, so that the individuals will be more willing to dovote their energy to their jobs. In the final analysis, whether the greatness of the individuals can be decided has little to do with if it is the contemporaries who can decide the greatness. It is the individuals themselves and the government of a country that play an important role in deciding whether their achievement could be recognized or not. Moreover, with the fast development of the world, we believe the process of deciding the greatness of an individual will be easier and faster. And the greatnesses of these individuals will play an even more important role in the furture.
