  1. i did my undergraduate econ at mcgill... if you want to do phd, i suggest you not to go to Mcgill MA econ... do MA Math at Mcgill U(heheheheheheh) (but i m serious..if you can..) ...Or MA econ from U of Toronto, UBC or Queen's
  2. Do you guys know any researchers who are applying game theory to growth theory?
  3. how much money did the program give their students?
  4. i obtained my bachelor from mcgill econ if u go there for MA econ, i suggest you not to go there. UBCMA minus $12000 is strictly better McGill MA
  5. so apart from a few calculus courses, linear algebra courses, probability and statistics courses. Does it have any must-have course for top 10 economics phd admission?
  6. Does anybody know how much it values for Phd admission and future use in doing research? Course Aims This course introduces some concepts and techniques of analysis, which are important in applications but not covered (at least in any details) in other mathematics courses offered by the department. It develops students’ ability in approaching more sophisticated mathematical problems with knowledge from classical analysis. Keyword Syllabus Inequalities. Fourier Series. Approximation and Interpolation. Bessel functions. Orthogonal polynomials.
  7. i think it also depends on what grade you got from your 1st PHD econometrics and 1st Real analysis. If you have got A in one but A- in the other, why don t you take the sequence you got A- before?
  8. how do we see the marginal benefit of taking it? didnot take it and fail in all the Phd admission this year and only take one course of real analysis and succeeds in the Phd application next year ?? Or have the similar profile with your classmates( SAME research interest, similar courses, simliar grades, similar LOR and similar GRE ) except you/your classmate have one more course of real analysis.. and he got in a better school than you.( with similar luck as well )
  9. i think the third classes of your linear algebra courses is helpful~ But i would like to ask if the class stresses on proof.
  10. of course it is "very" helpful. it is just relatively less important than 5 billions mathe courses in the world.
  11. to save time, i did it before.:p i did not take cal 1 and cal 2 (read it myself) before i took cal 3, and i did not take any statistics course before i took the classes using Statistical Inference by George Casella (Author), Roger L. Berger (Author) and econometrics using Econometric Theory and Methods (Hardcover) by Russell Davidson (Author), James G. MacKinnon (Author). Apart from A- from econometrics, I got A in other classes mentioned above. So I would not bother to suggest it if 1) you have confidence in yourself 2) your school allows you to take any courses without its pre-re and 3) willing to take the risk for any purpose it does save time~
  12. could u learn calculus 1 and calculus 2 yourself? If not, Calc 1-3 Linear Algebra 1-2 probability 1 Real Analysis Mathematical Analysis If yes, Cal 3-4 Linear Algebra 1-2 probability 1 Real Analysis Mathematical Analysis ODE
  13. there are regression analysis books.. i read some of them.. i found that the topics are very similar to those in econometrics.. So what s the difference between them?
  14. How do you guys think about the following texts? Amazon.com: Econometric Theory and Methods: Russell Davidson, James G. MacKinnon: Books
  15. I would suggest to take a proof-based course. For the numerical analysis, "it sounds like a proof-based one course" "it sounds like a proof-based one course", take it, my adviser always say.
  16. What about the other two LOR writers? Are they professor in Economics? If yes, I would rule out the 2nd choice above. But if two of your LOR writers are not professors in Economics, I prefer the 1st choice above.
  17. We use this book in the first Phd econometrics course.
  18. What other mathematics courses have you taken by then?
  19. so usually people here say RA...are they referring Elementary Real analysis with Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis or Graduate Real ANalysis with Royden?
  20. I am just curious about what type of journals did phd applicants publish before Phd admission. And I would like to ask what the difference between the main and the 2nd author?
  21. I found that quite a lot of people discussed what kinds of courses we should take. What about...what kinds of courses we don t need to bother (relatively)?:hmm:
