  1. I am not too sure about how much score I'd give you out of 6 because I dont have much idea about how toefl testing agency marks the essays. I suggest you take a look at the checklists and criteria for the essays, if you havent seen them yet. These criteria can either be downloaded online from the official website for toefl or can be found in the official guide book. once you have the criteria with you, you can ask a friend to rate your essay based on that. I didnt refer to it for my test, but it might help. Since i dont have the criteria grid, i wont be able to help you on that. :) keep practicing and I'm sure you'll achieve the score you want. good luck for your test.
  2. blue = omit this/omit these green = revised portion orange = revising sentence to make it more clear will help your essay is quite good so you need not panic! :) but you still have to practice. However, i notice some grammatical errors. you need to use pronouns where you can and also, try and develop your examples a little more. The way your essay has been structured is good - intro, firstly, secondly, finally and then summing up in conclusion. You also need to work on the tenses (past, present etc; ) in your sentences. You mis-spelt "interesting" - avoiding those mitakes is better. One last thing: *"then" is used to show course of action etc; for example: "wash your hands, then eat" *"than" is used for comparison. for example: "jill is better than jack" good luck :)

  4. hi! i've been reading all the posts closely. I wanted to ask, everyone'e mentioned kalpan and longman, has any one tried barrons? Bookstores in the country where I live do not have many books for teofl. Even the official guide was out of stock. Can any one tell me the exact name of the longman book so that i can try searching for it somewhere? Also, if any one is using barrons as well as other books, a feedback about the books will be much appreciated. Around how many days are sufficient to prepare for and get a good score in teofl ibt test? thanks!
  5. "Provided it" does have the same meaning i.e. provided the adhesive does not get dirty (in the above sentence). Also, i think it should be "Employees at this company were asked to think of a use for a weak adhesive which, provided it does not get dirty, can be reused"
  6. Thanks for correcting me also. dussamkumar, i think after all this discussion i understand why you said that the definition of osmosis varies from one source to another. Here, i think it is important to note that when one is saying that osmosis is "transporting from lower conc to higher conc", it is with respect to the concentration of the solute. I think that is why you were confused. Some put it the way I put: higher to lower and some put it as: lower to higher but with respect to solute concentration. A diluted solution (in other words, a solution with low solute concentration) will have high water potential, while a concentrated solution (high solute concentration in given volume of water) has a lower water potential - so water will move from a diluted solution to a concentrated solution across a partially permeable membrane. Hence the definition "from lower to higher" The definition cherryfda gave is perfectly correct :) In addition, one of the best ways to understand both definitions (not explain them) is that ulimately the movement of the solvent takes place down the concentration gradient. The query that now arises in my mind is "is osmosis only for water or for ALL solvents?"
  7. osmosis - from higher concentration to lower concentration across partially permeable membrane. applies to water. active transport - from lower to higher concentration. energy is utilised during the process.
  8. 1. A - seems close but since "Soviet audiences have seen a great deal of coverage" it is more likely that some of the conference had been covered, so this is incorrect. B - awkward C and D - "alive" doesnt make sense to me. E - seems to be most appropriate. "not all" were cariied live but Soviet audiences saw a great deal of the coverage. 2. I'll pick C.
  9. Does anyone know where one can find practice tests (online) for SAT 2 Subject Tests - Physics, Chemistry and Math IIc.
  10. A and B are close, but I'd go for B.
  11. I'll go with C. These are the most obvious mistakes in the following choices: A - problem with "was". it should be "were" instead B - as have been D - problem with "are" - since it says "ealier time" it should be "were" E - verbose
  12. C, D and E - eliminate rightaway. "cautiously allowed... to take credit" not "taking." In A "they" refers to the two women. Just try placing "the two women" instead of "they" in A and it'll make sense. Nevertheless, i feel A is not the answer. i'll pick B.
  13. i feel that its bound to be "lying" and not "lie" - only then will it comply with the tense in the sentence. So A,B and C are eliminated straightaway. E is absolutely awkward - "sharks pairs," its an incomplete phrase and if, for example, the sentence is read aloud the question that it is bound to raise is: "pairs of what?" So E should be eliminated. D is the most appropriate choice.
  14. since the question has the phrase "not only" - choices A,B and E should be eliminated straightaway. C and D remain. "it" goes with Chain of Retail Stores - not "theirs". So D looks like the best choice.
  15. animesh has a point. (thanks!) in that case, the answer should be C.
  16. i think the answer is E. cover the phrase "just picked from his garden" and read option C, it'll make sense.
  17. use of pronoun "he" is not required. saying "he was watching...and he was facing" is not only verbose, but awkward too.
  18. imo D. watching.... and facing - same tense.
