  1. yo, getting SAS verification is a waste of time and money - all you need to do is say you know how to use SAS, and if they want to verify, they'll ask you a question in the interview (and probably something easy). GL and bcg will in no way shape or form help you get into a phd. fed position is perfect - if youre deadset on phd go for that
  2. Type of Undergrad: top 10 liberal arts Undergrad GPA: 3.5 Type of Grad: none GRE: 790/630/6.0 Math Courses: multi, linear alg, real & complex analysis, diff-e-q, stat+prob Econ Courses: metrics, math-econ, history of thought Letters of Recommendation: 2 econ profs, 1 math prof from top 10 uni's Research Experience: RA at university, govt agency, private sector Teaching Experience: TA, math/stats/econ/stata&sas tutor Research Interests: "inequality," metrics SOP: spent 5 min on it RESULTS: Acceptances: osu, virginia, jhu, ucsd (attending), boston uni, brown Rejections: chicago, berkeley, mich, columbia What would you have done differently? i graduated in '07 and took a year off. would have tried to do one of those full-time academic research assistanships
  3. cool, thanks chess guy. uh, clive was there? darn it - i heard he's about the coolest laureate there is. also, i thought their macro was fairly decent, or at least not completely lacking?
  4. did anyone attend? can you tell me anything about funding situations and possibility of those not offered it thus far getting a ta-ship in first year (heard sometimes they offer late)
  5. i also found this rather disconcerting - its hard to believe in the last two years there is only a handful of very solid academic placements for a supposed top-10 to 15 program ... although i think that its probably not because metrics is dead - ps clive granger seems like the coolest guy ever - there's a picture of him on a motorcycle in the economic bulletin announcing his nobel
  6. does anyone know where to find placements for ucsd?
  7. Ah its not that bad. you can get housing for dirt cheap through the university and likely make 5-7 each summer. plus you can probs get some sort of position through the grad school first year. i think i'm going to go for it - plan is to go to ohio's open house and if not wowed i'll be heading to la jolla!
  8. ya i just got the aid letter as well with a simple "you gets nothing" paragraph. says "maybe" a ta-ship will open up first year, and that all years after first are covered. it really wouldnt be bad to pay only $25k for an entire 5 years' education, but it will be hard to choose between that and full funding from ohio
  9. thanks - kind of a bummer - but very helpful
  10. when you say "no point guarantee," what exactly do you mean, as in a range?
  11. i thought we were talking about aid ... first supposed to be emailed monday, then tues, and now its 1 pm cali time wednesday and no sign!
  12. i hope its today! the anticipation is painful
  13. all i know is that mary jane stood me up last night as i waited for the email, rose in hand, as it started to rain on my best suit. i'll still love her for the time-being pending on the decision
  14. actually, ya, they already sent out an email invite to the open house in which they said that financial aid offers (or non-offers) would be emailed today. But they're really making us sweat it out - its 8 pm already in new york!
  15. if we end up getting funding to ucsd, i will throw the first party of the year there
  16. has anyone received a formal aid offer yet or are we all waiting on those via snail mail?
  17. thanks, it helpful to hear all this. all would be funded years 2-5 - i do want to wait on brown, and yes ohio is a fellowship
  18. I'm interested in econometrics, macro, labor, history of thought: which one of these offers should I take? Thanks for your input. sorry for greedily starting my own thread on this UCSD (find out funding this week, assume none) Ohio State (full funding) Virginia (same) Brown (waitlist for funding) BU (no funding)
  19. the ben flies over and drops money on everyone so they all win

  21. funding information is coming out in snail mail to be sent by monday. notifications on the website are from the graduate school automatically generated just to say "you're in"
  22. i'm in ... no mention of aid. will have to call and see what's up, but no good news on aid is usually a bad thing... i would love to go there but without $$ it is going to be a hard decision
  23. you guys didn't know that everything's slower in socal?
