  1. Can anyone here explain the meaning/usage of the phrase "until recently"? For example, "recent studies on something conducted by somebody found that something was useful" Does this sentence mean that until recently somebody believed that something was NOT useful ? Thanks!
  2. BTW, Dunny, did G'town offered you a fellowship? Any news from UNC?
  3. I have heard that the department had made fellowships and rejections decisions. Anyone got $ or being short-listed for aid? Do you guys know how long the list would be? Cheers!
  4. Hi anukriti, How did you know that acceptance? By email?
  5. Dear Admitted Student, Congratulations on your admission to the Ph.D. program in Economics at the University of Virginia. If you’ve not yet received your official letter of admission, I can assure you it is on its way. In the meantime, on behalf of the Economics Department, I want to invite you to our upcoming Open House. On Friday, March 16th, we will offer a day of activities that will allow you to learn more about the University and our Ph.D. program. A tour of the Grounds, and discussions with faculty and current students will be included. You’ll find a schedule for the day attached to this email. This link -- http://www.virginia.edu/exploring.html -- will help you make travel and lodging arrangements. If you plan to attend the Open House, please RSVP no later than March 13th, to Patty Futrell at plf6n@virginia.edu. Unfortunately, we are not able to reimburse you for any travel expenses. However, Friday’s lunch and evening reception will be provided by the department. We look forward to meeting you. Sincerely, P.S.: I did not get any info regarding to admission from UVa before recieving this letter 1 hour ago
  6. Has anyone got AD/RJ from GWU so far? IS GWU a good school in DC? BTW, GZUZ, take care.
  7. So does this mean that those who just recieved this email are waitlisted or whose applications have not been reviewed at all? I doubt they have sent out rejections though.
  8. 'BA with first class standing" refers to the British system where they have first class, upper second and lower second, etc....all that means is that your GPA should be around at least 3.5 for MA and 3.8 for the PhD program
  9. According to 4.15 Resolution, it seems that we have the right to refuse/withdraw the contracted assistantship appointment/fellowship any time before 4/15. But how do you guys understand the resolution and deal with the $ offers? 4.15 Resolution Acceptance of an offer of financial support (such as a graduate scholarship, fellowship, traineeship, or assistantship) for the next academic year by a prospective or enrolled graduate student completes an agreement that both student and graduate school expect to honor. In that context, the conditions affecting such offers and their acceptance must be defined carefully and understood by all parties. Students are under no obligation to respond to offers of financial support prior to April 15; earlier deadlines for acceptance of such offers violate the intent of this Resolution. In those instances in which a student accepts an offer before April 15, and subsequently desires to withdraw that acceptance, the student may submit in writing a resignation of the appointment at any time through April 15. However, an acceptance given or left in force after April 15 commits the student not to accept another offer without first obtaining a written release from the institution to which a commitment has been made. Similarly, an offer by an institution after April 15 is conditional on presentation by the student of the written release from any previously accepted offer. It is further agreed by the institutions and organizations subscribing to the above Resolution that a copy of this Resolution should accompany every scholarship, fellowship, traineeship, and assistantship offer.
  10. Re: Kartelite. As far as I know, the Council's agreement (4.15) only applies to those who hold admissions without financial rewards. And most schools do ask their funded students to make early commitments by 3.15/late March. Yeah, there is no doubt that Clemson is the lowest ranked school on my list in terms of nationwide academic reputation and location. With a degree from Clemson, one can ONLY expect to find a NONacademic job locally given that it is “the # 1” in the state of SC; am I correct?
  11. Hello, everyone, This is my first post here. Actually, I have 2 questions. And I very appreciate if any of you would answer it. 1) Is Clemson University in SC a well-respected school? I was offered an admission with aid of 15k, RA 1st year+ TA onwards. My profile is below. 2) What should I reply to the econ department if I am still waiting for the results from other higher ranked schools like in the 30~40s, because they asked me to reply them by mid Feb? (BTW, is that fair?) What would happen if I sign the assistantship contract first and change minds later say by Mid March? Is it legally binding or more like a moral issue than a legal one? My background: GRE: V 95%, Q 94% MA Econ (US tier 2, NRC 80s) GPA 4.0, BA Econ (US tier 3, NRC 80s) GPA 3.8 Econ: Macro and Micro I and II, Metrics I, II, Math Econ (All As) STAT: Math Stat, Intro to Prob, Stochastic Process. (All As) MATH: Cal I, II, Linear Algebra, Advanced Cal (All As) TA for 3 years (13 econ courses) Admission Results: Indiana UVA UNC Maryland, AREC Maryland, regular Iowa Georgetown NCSU (Admitted 1/24, $ - Early March) Colorado Rice ND Buffalo SMU (Admitted last year w/o $) UIC (Admitted last year w/o $) American (Admitted 11/14/2006, $ -Decisions later) Clemson (Admitted w/ 15k, 12/2006)
