  1. As a lot of us know that its not easy to get admit in US programs with a degree from UK I have seen some profile from LSE were not able to gain in to top US programs, as far my MSc our recommended texts were quite advance and all the professors were good. I would rate 4.5/5.
  2. QMUL is good there recent recruitment is from LSE, Oxford, Cambridge and they are spending a lot on research. PM If you need further details I have my MSc from QMUL.
  3. Institution: Ottawa Program: Economics, PhD Decision: Accepted Funding: tuition + TA (if avaliable not gurantee) Notification date: 13/04 Notified through: Email Comments: Will decline
  4. Institution:McMaster University Program:Economics PhD Decision: Waitlisted Notification date:04/03/2008 Notified through:E-mail Comments: This is an update on the status of your application for admission to McMaster's Economics PhD program. We have sent out the first round of admission offers, and we have turned down many other applicants. Your file is being kept on hold in case we have room later on to make you an admission offer. This will depend on the number of first-round offers that are accepted. We will not have this information for a couple of weeks yet.

  7. Thanks for all the comments esp ariel1987 and diesel. I have made up my mind if Canada then UWO and still wait for ANU outcome. I have also plans to apply to UBC and UoT next year as this year I was later for GRE but for sure I will try next year with results from Canada as UK grades are not converted properly I know a guy who just finished his MSc in Economics and Econometrics from LSE and applied to 18 schools from top-50 and just two offers from 40-50 one with funding other one no funding. So, will give my luck another go next year. (based on advice from test magic memebres, sister (Economist with state bank of Pakistan, and DAD)
  8. canecon, you are right, but the most important thing which attract me towards waterloo is their 8-12 months work experience requirement, UWO is much better but in Pakistan UWaterloo is prefered on UWO. If am not successful then I will come back here and UWaterloo PhD will help me more compare to UWO.
  9. Diesel - No idea, I was surprised by the outcome as well and Guleph rejection was the first out come of my application and after that I completely gave up the hopes that I will be accepted anywhere but after two weeks first offer from UWO came there and then yesterday Waterloo with in my opinion very good funding. When i got rejected from Guelph I posted on web and cancuknomist told me its random. May be my BSc and MSc are from UK and every university has different conversion methods. UWO : UK BSC(2:1) and MSC (Merit) is equivalent of 80% mean 60% is a start of 80%. Waterloo: Same they were quite impressed by education record UK 2:1 or Merit is 75% in Waterloo term. Ottawa: - Very strange according web tool it say UK 75% is equivalent of Ottawa 75%, but according to conversion methods used by other uniz e.g. Queen’s, Chicago, Toronto, UBC UK 70% is 4.0 or 90%+. Guelph: UK 60%(2:1) is equivalent of their 70%. I have BSc with 65% and MSc with 69%. So may be that harmed me. In my opinion there should be an standard method, any thing else I have no idea may be no GRE. UWO waived my GRE before I applied.
  10. Institution: University of Waterloo - Canada Program: Applied Economics, PhD Decision: Accepted Funding: First Year $ 34,060 (include $1,000 relocation allowance), then $33,060 for next three years Notification date: 3/18 Notified through: Check the web in morning then received email in eve. Comments: Planning to accept as I have no plans to become an adcom, want to join WB, IMF, UN, Consulting, think tank or any central bank, and Waterloo's 8 months co-op placement will help me to achieve that. But still waiting for other replays. (but jumped in the air with joy after seeing the offer hel ya). Institution: UWO Program: Economics, PhD Decision: Accepted Funding: tuition + 12,000 Notification date: 3/12 Notified through: Email Comments: Confused Institution: Guelph Program: Economics, PhD Decision: Rejected Funding: CAN $ -90 + courier charges (done it twice) Notification date: 2/26 Notified through: Email Comments: They don't know what they missed.
  11. It is but I got an offer of CAN $ 34K first year, then CAN $ 33K from Waterloo, I don't want to become an adcom. Will try to join IMF, WB, UN, some think tank or consulting or central bank. So am planning for Waterloo. :)
  12. I saw a rejection for PhD (UWO) on gradcafe, I contacted the grad secretary vie email in reply I got email today (as am current location time is 13+ Canadian time, so yesterday in Canada ) stating am accepted and funding details ( not that good and will cover my fee only), Also got admitted in waterloo don't know about funding not mentioned online.
  13. In last couple of years UCL’s placement record is better than Cambridge (M.Phil). UCL placed its graduates in OXBRIDGE, LSE, Warwick, Durham, Queen Mary, York. I had two of my lecturers who graduate in 2004 and 2006 from UCL teaching at QMUL and working with LSE research. So, UCL is some way better than Cambridge.
  14. I already joined a distance learning diploma in Maths with LSE and studying Advanced Calculus, Optimization, diacrete mathematics Linear Algebra and Mathematical Modeling plus 2 optional. I was planning to join any PhD program and then next year when I will have my diploma (exam in Dec,09) and if some PhD module results in my hand then I will apply for PhD in UoT, UBC, Queens, and Chicago. So, this will be really important for me. Thanks canuckonomist your always a good help.
  15. Help me with my options I applied to very lower tire universities for my PhD on Thursday I received a rejection from University of Guelph, and after from this rejection am accepting that due to no math course on my transcripts and lower grades in econometrics (gradate level B, B-, Undergraduate A+) and Micro (graduate A, B-) I will be rejected from all the universities I applied can some one please help me with this I didn’t applied to any MA programs - Letter grades in Canadian grading using - Queens, LSE, Cambridge, Waterloo and Leeds conversion guide. MSc Queen Mary- University of London 68% (Canadian 86%) BSc London Metropolitan University 64% (Canadian 80%) Universities applied – See signatures. Please advice me.
  16. University: Guelph Program: PhD Decision: Rejected Comment: may be no math courses on transcripts as degree is from UK Where majority of universities have just economics courses in program.
  17. University: Guelph Program: PhD Decision: Rejected Comment: may be no math courses on transcripts as degree is from UK Where majority of universities have just economics courses in program.
  18. UWO is highly selective in choosing their applicants. I know student decline by UWO accepted at Chicago but maybe from profile they can assume that this person should have applied to other good schools (a profile with GPA 3.7+, GRE 770+>Q, good references) so maybe they will join there, but still UWO is more competitive than Queens, UBC and Toronto.
  19. I accept there is an increase in applicant pool, but not from people already working in industry e.g. bankers, central bank economist, main reason behind the increase is fresh graduates who hearing the rumours that it can be worse than 1929. Universities are also on the same route, I think we should take any offer (I will not take any offer without funding, tight on finances) and then think to reapply again my aim is to work in IMF, WB or central bank which have the age limit of 34 so I have 6 years to sort out mean another year to go for better universities.
  20. Am in same boat, still waiting to hear from the Canadian Universities I applied. Includes Guelph, UWO, York, Waterloo, Concordia, McMaster, Ottawa. Guelph said maybe last week of Feb or first week of March Ottawa- received an email from Economics department saying that will let you know in two weeks or so on. so waiting. By the way all PhD programs.
  21. Diplomer, Let me check my old lecture notes from my MSc econometrics professor. Which has this proof. May be 2morow.
  22. During My MSc we used Greene and Hamilton and another books recommended Generalized Method of Monets Estiamtion, Laslo Matyas and advanced econometrics by Takeshi Amemiya. And seriously I done very bad in econometrics A and B got B+ in A and B- in 2nd mean UK B and C.
  23. LSE is not that bad. I accept its not easy to obtain a distinction in UK MSc program it’s not just LSE I went to Queen Mary- UOL (declined LSE they didn’t offered me any funding). We were 160 students in 5 different degree titles in Economics department and just one obtained Distinction just 70.1%. The basic problem with UK economic degree that it has virtually no math expects Mathematics for economics. This is one of the biggest drawbacks for UK graduates during applying for top-5. Plus the US and Canadian grades are quite inflated. Let me give you a good example for three modules Micro B, Econometrics B and Financial Econometrics all of these have 25% weighted for class test in Final result and believe me the maximum marks Micro B professor awarded were 9 out of 25 an he wrote excellent work on the student's test sheet and for me 8.5 with outstanding on sheet, same applies to other modules not more than 12 which automatically decrease your chances to obtain a 70+ marks in those modules in exam the max you will be able to achieve is 70 on weighted it should be around 45, and the final result will be between 55-65. And believe me US adcoms know this issue. Give a try to LSE which is more famous and reputable around the world. If you passed with a distinction excellent other wise 68%-69% (my university has a distinction on 70%) still make 3.7+ GPA which will be enough with good GRE to take you to top 5 program the best benifit of UK MSc program is your dissertation which can give you a good boost compared to MSc from Can and US as there are taught modules compared to dissertation. (Don't know about UPF)
  24. After completing BSc in Financial Economics I went for a MSc in Finance and Econometrics both from UK(University of London). Now applied for PhD programs in Canada. Guelph, Concordia, UWO, York, McMaster, Ottawa, Waterloo
  25. My BSc and MSc are from UK, so just UCL and Warwick. you are safe for warwick and UCL. But funding will be tough.
