1. I heard of a UNM student that transferred to another program. I don't know any details or if it's even true...I'll try to find out. But i don't think it's that crazy to think about leaving for a higher ranked program since we are a low-ranked program. I'm sure some profs.( including the chair) might not like the idea, but I'm sure some won't care... I do know that a few students came here after not passing prelims at higher ranked schools...
2. my fellowship is paid out in three payments..10k in the fall and spring and 4k in the summer
3. I have admit there are many outdoor activities available in Laramie...But its still not that cool for most people. I lived in a smaller town than Laramie ( Arcata,Ca with a pop. of around 15,000), so im not a city slicker by any means, and Arcata offered many more activities than Laramie...
4. WYO is the best program out of the ones mentioned and 16K is more than enough to live in that town...That being said, Laramie blows...I've been to Laramie a couple times and there is not many things to do...Although Denver is close, so that could be a positive
5. Hang in there singmeat.....I'm sure UNM will fund you....
6. Last summer I spend a month taking more stats courses at a University of Michigan summer program.
7. yeah, but it goes to show that the process can be random....
8. This profile is from an applicant in 2007. She was my classmate at a small state school in CA and was admitted with full funding at UC IRVINE. She got a 660 Q ... Profile
9. I know most of you won't be interested, but for those of you interested in applying to UNM here are some of the placements from the last ten years ( It's incomplete since the department does not have a list. I compiled the list by goggling former students to find out their initial placement and using profs. c.v.'s) ...Btw, has anyone uploaded info on econspace? I haven't seen much info on there... here is the link University of New Mexico - Department of Economics - Econspace
10. I agree with the last post...I only took Calc I & II and i was fully funded at the University of New Mexico. I would assume it's possible to get funded at other schools in the 200 range...Linear Algebra is recommended but not required. I did not take Linear Algebra before i got here but I've since taken a course, plus math boot camp and Math Econ ( we used Simon & blume and hoy )...
11. Hello, I just thought i would let everyone know about this opportunity. It's a Visiting Grad Research Fellowship for 2009. $10,000 stipend per semester ($6000 for summer semester). If you can't open the pdf containing more info, let me know so i can email the pdf to you. oavdn17@gmail.com
12. Here are recent placements from Miami(Oh) according to their website: placements *scroll to the bottom of the page to see grad school placement
13. I met a guy last year , who is at UCLA and he did the MA program at SFSU...
14. No , i i didn't go there but thats why i asking.I met a couple of profs from UT Pan Am this past year and they told me they've had a few students go to the summer program...
15. I knew i recognized the names, so i checked my email and sure enough! Grijalva was the name ! She got her Phd here at UNM, and in December she presented this paper at our weekly seminar. So here is the paper she sent us before the seminar. Im not sure if they made changes to the paper before it was published but here it is:
16. thats amazing. I read Mas-Colell, but it's not for fun! ( by the way , you should try reading Varian's Micro Theory )
17. I didnt care if i got into CUNY! I had already been accepted at UNM with full funding. I didn't need to stroke my ego! plus i didnt actually pay (project 1000). I applied to CUNY because i didn't have to pay, but i really didn't want to move to NYC. I remember checking online and it said my app was being reviewed but i don't ever recall getting a letter or email stating their decision.
18. i never heard back from CUNY last year. But i never called to ask about my status, so it might not mean anything..
19. A few M.A. students at UNM have full assistantships..
20. reviewing does not mean "burning out"! I think its important to brush up on those subjects that maybe you haven't taken in a while. This could include some math, micro or metrics. I wasn't suggesting for the OP to study all summer. Last summer , i didn't do anything and i wish i would have reviewed some math.
21. start reviewing for your courses in the fall. Get a textbook list and buy the books ( i bought my books in late summer !)....
22. I don't think there is a specific score, especially if you have done well in math courses(Of course that includes calc sequence, linear algebra, and some proof based courses). I got a 700q score and i was offered a fellowship ( although its probably irrelevant to most of you, since im at a low ranked school). But more importantly for the OP,my undergrad classmate got a 660q score( im pretty sure she double majored in math) and was awarded full funding at UC Irvine. So i personally don't think it's a big deal , well at least outside of the top 20, if your profile can make up for the deficiency with your math courses.
23. Hello, I just read this article and its interesting to hear what some profs. think. As im going through the first year core courses my first thought was that they should be changed, but then after a bit of time i realize its the foundation we need as future economists....Read it and let me know what you think Economists Call for a Redesign of First-Year Core Courses for Graduate Students
