  1. NYU is awesome, but the graphics program is very competitive.
  2. I'll be in Columbia next year in the CS program. Who else here will be there? I know vipul will... anyone else?
  3. A guy named "tolerant" has a website called "notjewish.com"???? Care to explain?
  4. Sure... here's a breakdown Housing - through Columbia, expect about 700 a month for your bed in a shared apartment, including utilities. This is actually rather cheap for the area. Personally, I am living uptown (20 minutes away) where 1000 dollars gets you an entire 2 bedroom apartment. I think International House is not that expensive (relatively speaking), but its dormitory style and not really my speed. Food is not cheap. You can easily spend 30+ dollars a day on cafe food or fast food resturaunts (more if you pick nicer places), so be sure you have a kitchen available where you are housed to cook for yourself. I have no clue what tuition is but that should be on the website somewhere. Transportation - metro cards are the way to go. Subways cost about 1.70 a ride if you buy cards, or 70 a month for unlimited rides. You can get anywhere with subway/buses, and anyways you have no choice because its near impossible to keep a car in NYC. There's also a zipcar near Columbia - http://www.zipcar.com/columbia - but I hear they are more of a pain then anything else. Taxis are expensive. Columbia is on the upper end of the Upper West Side, so you'll need transportation anytime you want to do anything, since it's mostly downtown. I think you could get by, bare minimum, on about 1500 a month living like a churchmouse. But I am not there yet (i'm in a different part of the city) so my numbers are inexact.
  5. The online application status has finally been updated.. dont know if thats for me, or for everyone, but it might be worth checking again
  6. Actually, by phone. I called them to say I got the fellowship, and they let me in immediately. After that, I got an email, which said that there would be a snail mail to follow. As of just now, since you asked, the online application still says 'pending' so I guess they don't update it much.
  7. Thanks everyone! Dionysus, I'm sure I'll see you around, but I probably won't know who you are, nor you me ;). Stats, as requested: GRE: 800 800 6.0 CS GRE: 830 (87%) GPA: ~3.98 MAJORS: CS & Math RESEARCH: 2 Projects, no papers SCHOOL: Small liberal arts college, but has sent a few grads to Columbia's CS PhD before. FELLOWSHIPS: Won 2, actually, and an Honorable Mention for a third, but I only told Columbia about one of them (other's came after I was accepted) so I don't think they count. I'm taking only one, of course. OTHER: I took a course in Columbia last semester with the professor who admitted me into his lab, which was certainly helpful. I basically haunted the CS department for a few months, visting a bunch of professors and trying to keep my name on their minds.
  8. And... I'm in at Columbia for CS Phd. This has definitely been my week... :D - I got a national fellowship as well (leaving out which, since there's just a bit too much information about me in this post already... ;)) Haven't heard definitively from NYU yet - I spoke to a prof there last week, and he said my application was still in the pile being considered, but that was all I heard. Doesn't matter, though, cuz Columbia's where I'm headed. Anyone else going to Columbia?
  9. Just for the record, one prof told me that people are starting to trust the CS GRE less and less since it tests such an eclectic and often random set of CS knowledge. You need extremely broad knowledge to ace the test, while many schools are looking for more focused knowledge in particular research areas. So chill, everyone. Wood especially, if you are looking at Columbia (like you said you were), 3 different profs have told me that the subject GRE counts for almost nothing there.
  10. 830, 87th percentile. I agree - not good enough to be "WOW" to an admissions committee, but not bad enough to kill my chances. I'm kinda hoping General Test scores are weighted higher... ;)
