  1. It's not a bad site, but it can be hard to navigate and there are some bugs. Applycorner: place for graduate school applicants is another site I'd recommend.
  2. I'm sorry to hear that a careless mistake by a proctor resulted in an lower score for you. What's the problem with having two scores on your report? If there is a large difference between the scores, I'm sure adcoms will ask you why there is such a change and you could clarify.
  3. So I'm flipping through my Kaplan book..it says the ETS was going to change the GRE from the computer adaptive test (CAT) to the computer based test (CBT) this Fall. But this change was canceled and a minor change will be occurring in November 2007. I wanted to double check on the website, and it says that the GRE is a "computer based" exam. I'm kind of confused...I hope I haven't studied the wrong stuff for the exam. I've just taken the Kaplan, Barron's tests, etc. I think I might be having almost-exam-day jitters. So what's up? Is it really just AWA/Q/V with antonyms, RC, SC and the whole hoo ha for Q like QC, etc?
  4. It could be that the section you skipped was not an experimental section. Call up ETS and explain your situation. (Btw, is it even allowed for a proctor to say that to students during the examination period?)
  5. The numbers for #3 are not verbatim. I came up with those numbers knowing that the procedure for answering such problems would be the same regardless of integer value. Set V is the sum of the even integers from 1-48 inclusive and set D is the sum of odd integers from 1-48 inclusive.
  6. If you get a good GRE score, it may help balance your application. I think a score of >1400 would be good. Aim for 800 on the quantitative section if you want to do something in engineering.
  7. These are probably elementary for some students here, but some clarification on these three problems would be helpful. Thanks. 1) S is a set of integers from numbers 1-48 inclusive. V is the sum of the even integers and D is the sum of the odd integers. Column A- Set V Column B- Set D 2) If "n" and "d" are positive integers such that "n" is a multiple of "d", how many positive multiple of "d" are less than or equal to "n"? 3) There was a problem similar to what Kickboxer put up but an answer and process would be good: worker A alone finishes a job in 3 hours. Worker A + B finish the job in 7 hours. How many hours does worker B finish the job alone?
  8. The Word document doesn't work as far as I know, but the link provided (formerly swt.edu...) is now: Student Learning Assistance Center - SLAC GRE Quantitative Handouts
  9. 1) Thanks 2) I didn't get it either. This is similar to a GRE problem I encountered but I didn't understand how to solve it. 3) The problem showed a triangle with base on the x plane with base 5 and height 5 - again the height of the triangle was oblique and not perpendicular to the base. They asked for the area in column A and put a number in column B. I put 1/2(5*5) = 25/2 as the area for column A (which was the same number in column B) but it does not equal.
  10. How do you work the following questions out? (I've made these questions up as an example) 1) A top turns 50 rounds in 4 minutes. At that constant rate, how many turns will 4 such tops turn in 2 1/2 hours? 2) If the probability that Rockstar will win a game is 3/7 (probability of winning over probability of not winning), what are the odds that Rockstar will win the game? 3) If a question is asking the area of a triangle whose height is not 90ยบ (it is skewed), would the area of the triangle be different even if the height and base equal the same number? Thanks!
  11. There is no harm in taking the section, but there might be harm in skipping it. Your friend skipped the AW because taking it again would probably result in a lower score so she probably thought "what's the point in taking it if the odds are I will do worse? Adcoms look at the higher score anyway." Exactly, but the argument could be used for taking the test. If adcoms are going to look at the higher score, taking it again and doing worse would give them an idea of where you stand but they will (probably) take the higher score. However, if you skip it all together, they will wonder "why didn't this person take it?" and this might arouse doubts in their minds concerning your score and perhaps your application.
