  1. I agree with Iceman. Following UBC and Toronto, I would go for U of A, UWO and Queen's in order.
  2. Waterloo is strong in PhD in Accounting. It has decent placements like U of A in recent years.
  3. U of A is known for its corporate finance, however we have very decent placements for microstructure guys and it is getting better year by year. Randall is one of the best in North America in corporate finance. We have quality research conducted and sent for top journals. Profs are very helpful and nice. You might consider UWO and Queen's. But among them, absolutely I would shoot for U of A. Edmonton is not a nice city at all. I find here a bit boring ( great excuse for studying though.)
  4. Another UIUC here. (One of my friends) I am happy for him. Good luck to everybody! Tough waiting times!
  5. I think game theory fits more to industrial organization in business department. Ind. organization is also available in Econ departments too... If you are a quantitative guy and find an appropriate professor, you can even study game theory in a math department :) For statistics, you can go for any area of business, we use it throughout in all areas of specialization.
  6. None of the schools are rich enough to afford 100 students. For finance, at most 5 students per year I guess.
  7. You guys think that it is easier to go through all the process without family? Probably you are right, if the individual can focus on what he is going through. There are a lot of people doing their PhDs with their kids and families. All of you will be alright.
  8. I am also in Canada and I am in the PhD Finance program without any masters degree. UBC and U of T requires you to have some kind of graduate degree anyways.
  9. Try Alberta. Boring place and terrible weather. Winnipeg is even worse...
  10. UBC is probably the best place to go, taking account the vibrant community and nice weather of Vancouver. Finance area also has recent good placements in the job market.
  11. Now I feel glad about being admitted to PhD last year. Thanks god! Good luck to this year's applicants. Times are tough
  12. You can find a list of European and Non-US Universites that offer M.Sc in Finance here: http://www.ualberta.ca/~ozsoy/msclist.htm For Canada, I can recommend Queen's M.Sc, and you can find placements on the website. A good preperation for PhD in Finance though. There are also masters in HEC Montreal, Laval and University of Sherbrook if you have a good command in French. Bilkent University's M.Sc in Finance is also highly quantitative oriented as a good preperation for PhD. There are plenty of schools offering M.Sc's for Finance in US too... Good luck,
  13. For my school, I am sure that Finance PhD program does not like older guys at all.(not older but too old) I heard a lot of stories about some older guys who applied to Finance, ended up in Accounting just because of their age.
