  1. haha... "diffy Q" ... if you're choosing between Indiana or Ohio, definitely go with the former. at the least, stick out two years at Indiana-- if you're able to be the "top" student there, then transferring shouldn't be a problem (but you will obviously have to re-take the first two years). i don't think doing an MA in econ will give you a greater edge than doing 2 years at Indiana and then transferring/re-applying.
  2. is the 36k fully a stipend? (or does it also include fees, tuition, etc)?
  3. on econphd, Irvine is ranked top 10 for public economics, social choice theory, and political economy. and a few of you mentioned some macro stuff, but do they have any other strengths?
  4. thanks for the info, andronicus and berthe! i wasn't able to attend the flyout (stupid midterms :p) so i found this post very informative. how many other prospective students were at the flyout?
  5. hi stupoidolive. what is the phd program you are in now? (if you don't feel comfortable with revealing that info, could you provide its relative rank?)
  6. antichron would definitely be a pure sophisticate ;).
  7. oh my gosh, that was hilarious!! its all about the hamiltonians baby! :D
  8. BERKELEY!! and MIT, and Harvard is good too. but in my opinion (perhaps heavily baised ;)) berkeley just has the most interesting behavioral research--- and like Antichron mentioned, has the frontrunners Rabin and Koszegi. I am lucky enough to have taken two of the behavioral courses at Berkeley, and really enjoyed both. Plus there is a field in "psychology and economics," which is one of the department's most popular fields too.
  9. i don't see how antonio is being disrespectful... he did say "almost all admissions"... and his question is a legitimate question for such a forum. i know a lot of you are stressed out and on edge here, but no reason to blame antonio for something i'm sure he had no intention of\!
  10. answer is yes. and i'm mildly freaked out by this. (i should be been better about maintaining anonymity).... do i know you wednesday>
  11. given the tense atmosphere on this board as of late, perhaps it'd be fun to liven up this forum a bit. so here's a question for you to think about: if you could assemble 3 or 4 economists to be on your dissertation committee, who would they be? since we're in dream-world here, let's say that committee members can be from different schools. go!
  12. that doesn't even compare to my horrible freshman year GPA. think below 2.0!! but i managed to pull a 3.6 overall, and 3.9ish for econ and the past two years. (application-wise, it probably did hurt me since 3.6 is still on the lower-end of the gpa spectrum for top candidates...) i think that your GPA from the last two years (from which you presumably took more difficult classes) matters much more.
  13. lol, i'm hardly a top applicant, but thanks anyways! i'm sure the admission process has to do with sheer volume, since in their letter they mentioned a "record number of applicants this year" or something like that. ... i'm also fairly certain that i will turn down the offer, so hopefully that makes some more room for borderline applicants.
