  1. oxford is not famous for macro in terms of finance you have excellent time-series econometricians who do a lot of finance-applications
  2. Dear all, I want to apply for MPhil/PhD at UCL and I am wondering if I should retake my GRE (previous results: 710/560/3.5). I know that for US Schools the answer would be straightforward, though I am not too sure if this is really the case for UCL (the rest of my application is quite strong). Anyone with personal experiences with UCL applications or from UCL itself here around? Thx! :grad:
  3. Hi Wikiwiz, you might have a look on this site: developmentdata.org It gives you a overview and provides links to some possibly relevant databases. Best.
  4. Hey Valhalla, have you already rejected Davis' offer? Was it a fellowship or a TA? I am asking for reasons of personal interest :) btw, is there a difference between the $ and the double $$ in your list?
  5. Freud, I was notified via mail, the letter was postmarked some day in mid march. I got the email from the college at the end of march. You can call dominique attala (People — Development Studies at Oxford) but she might be unwilling to tell you your application status (as she was with me when I called her by mid march).
  6. To add sth to your query: I recently contacted someone who did the MSc and this person was not sure if it is really a top pushing programme for top US graduate schools. it seems to be less math oriented than other masters; however, it was also reported that it has become stronger analytically in the last years, one who did it two years ago allegedly went to MIT (I suppose in economics but did not ask)
  7. I was also accepted to the program but I am only considering it for proceeding from there to the DPhil. Hence I'd like to add to an84's query the question if you would consider it as worth to take the risk of enrolling into the programe allthough you have to be quite top of the class to be able to pass to 2nd year MPhil (sorry an84 for using your thread for this ). Maybe someone reading this has gone this way or knows people that did it. The problem is also the high investment (24.000 Pound ).
  8. what econphd says (trade & development): Journals: Trade & Development
  9. the story is hypothetical, I am not at Davis, but was accepted there and my interests are more or less how described I checked the ARE faculty and some people doing development there, thanks for the advice. I am not sure, agriculture/development is not really what I am interested in, but I have to check it better... so how it is with commuting?
  10. Hey, this thread is quite interesting. Let me outline the following which I'd be happy to get some comments on. I study at UCD and specialize quite successfully in metrics (micro and panel). I also want to do some courses in development, which is, as far as I can see, not really existent at UCD. Hence I commute to Berkeley to take courses with Bardhan or Miguel, which does not to seem to be difficult. Suppose I study quite hard and obtain good grades in their courses. Now I realize that I'd really like to write my thesis on some topic they are specialized on (let's say empirical development micro). Do you think they would be allowed to supervise me (assuming that they are willing to do so)? Of course, the reasoning can be generalized to any other field not covered at UCD. By the way, how much time does it take to UCB campus from Davis? Is there a regular pub transport connection (like every hour or something alike)?
  11. Hey Chauchau, What do you mean by 'it's cake'? Would you recommend to contact these departments already and query about such positions? I mean, naturally I would like to know whether I can finance the whole story before I start it. Was he from the 1st or 2nd year? What do you mean? Do TA-ships at other departments not imply these in-state fee reductions from $10,000 to $600?
  12. thanks GMM for your wise words... :grad: No, seriously, all you guys helped me to get some kind of impression how it would be to live in Paris, Oxford or Warwick. The thing is that I have to decide where to spend a considerable time of my life, so I am trying to increase my information the best I can to optmize this decision under uncertainty. One aspect which may be important is that stronger relationships with fellow students and less distractions in Oxford might help to concentrate more on studying. Thanks guys.
  13. Hi, I was accepted into Davis, unluckily without funding or TA-ship. One answer to a FAQ on the departments' webpage states that new graduate students can apply for TA-ships in other departments such as Math, Statistics or Agricultural and Resource Economics. Has anyone reading this post had experience with this issue at Davis (maybe personal experience or informations from other persons he/she knows) to provide a comment on the dificulty to get such a position outside econ department? I am not sure if I am likely to get a TA-ship at Math or Statistics department (I have taken a lot of graduate level econometrics courses with good grades but had kinda low GRE Q), but what are the typical requirements at ARE? Best and thanks.
  14. Sorry but there were server problems so please ignore the previous thread... I know this query is rather on the soft facts of a program, however it is important to me considering I have to spent 4 to 5 years of my life in this place. I am well informed about the programs itself and funding possibilities so I rather like to know about your opinion on the locations. Best and thanks.
