  1. In C, why can't "those" also refer to "manufacturers"? -- both "manufacturers" and "small cars" are plural. What am I missing whereby "they"/"their" in Answer Choice A,B,D,E is ambiguous and "those" in Answer Choice C is not ambiguous?
  2. Taken from http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/79540-fuel-efficient.html Referring to the red below... Is it true that the pronoun "those" only refers to the closest noun?? --- similar to "which"??
  3. When the integer k is divided by 12, the remainder is 3. Which of the following, when divided by 18, will have a remainder of 6 ? I. 2k II. 6k III. 4k + 6 (A) I only (B) II only © III only (D) None (E) I, II, and III
  4. Because they can reproduce several times each year and produce large numbers of offspring, many insect species can generally adapt quickly to changes in their environment. A. Because they can reproduce several times each year and produce large numbers of offspring, many insect species B. Because of many insect species’ ability of reproducing several times a year, along with producing large numbers of offspring, thus they C. Because they can reproduce yearly several times, along with producing offspring in large numbers, so many insect species D. Due to their capability to reproduce several times yearly and to produce large numbers of offspring, many insect species E. Due to their ability of reproducing several times yearly and to produce offspring of large numbers, many insect species
  5. This is a tough one... I'm having a hard time figuring out what the intended meaning of the sentence is: as sandeep mentioned several posts earlier, the million dollar question is: What are the 2 assumptions?? We know 1) that there are clearly identifiable thinking skills... As for the 2nd, I'm not sure... 2a) that if students [blah blah blah], they will become.... (Choice E) 2b) that students will become... (Choice B) I think 2b) is the assumption (thus ans. choice B), and that the if statement is NOT part of that assumption as it is a constraint... what do other ppl think?
  6. 800Bob, while I've read many of your posts in the past and greatly valued (and agreed with) your insights on difficult problems, I still can't seem to come to terms with the answer C of this problem. You mentioned that you chose C because "Choice C says that other plants grow in metal-rich soil also exhibit high histidine production". However, I still can't seem to find the finding's relation to growth in metal-rich soil in choice C. Can anyone help resolve this discrepancy?
  7. For E, don't you need a "was" or a "were" in there to be parallel? Thus: "So dogged were Frances Perkins'...., so persistent [was] her lobbying for wage and hour reform, that Alfred..."
  8. Another one for D. E is definately wrong. --- ..."developed a scale THAT rates..." This insinuates that the scale is doing the rating, which is wrong. It's the astronomers that are doing the rating against a scale. My second choice is C --- but eventually chose D over C because the "be" sounded awkward.
  9. Another one for E. So is this from GMATPrep or not?? If so, please show proof! ;)
  10. Ah, but your 2nd the question --- the answer is NOT NECESSARILY "No". There is no mention that connects the CAUSE: low crop yield to the EFFECT: decrease in farmers preference. What do other people think?
  11. Hmm.... sonal_p makes a good point.... BUT the question asks to evaluate the ARGUMENT. --- and the argument never mentions "crop yields" to play any factor in this. I think D is a red herring (distraction). I think to evaluate the argument, we need to focus on 1) pesticides and 2) the fact that people like LESS pesticides on their crops. One more vote for B.
  12. Hmmm... The first thing that struck me that was wrong was the ambiguous reference of "often green and striped..." we don't know if it's the Heirlooms Tomatoes or its Cousins. That said, D and E doesn't really help much as "they" is just as ambiguous of a pronoun --- (STILL could be the Cousin(s) Since this area was ambiguous in ALL answer choices, I decided to move on to other aspects of the question: "ONLY look less appetizing..." --- the semi-colon in D and E seem to make a fragment of the sentence since the "only" alludes to a contrasting word like "but" later on in the sentence. Also, I think the last part of the sentence "MORE flavorful" is meant to be parallel to "LESS appetizing" --- and the semi-colon in D and E disrupts that parallelism. --- in D and E the second part of the sentence (after the semi-colon), --- what exactly is "more flavorful"?? I choose A. --- not perfect, but lesser of the 5 evils.
  13. Actually I think the answer to the first question is 40. --- it just says the facing the SAME direction... doesn't specifically say front nor rear facing --- thus it's 20*2 = 40
