  1. Strange. I got V41 and Q49, but my total score was 740 and not 730???????????
  2. I think that my GRE V wasn't so good because I am not native English speaker, so word meanings are horrible for me (and that is the great difference between verbal gmat and verbal gre).
  3. Friends: I am going to apply to a PhD Program in Management. Business Schools generally accept GMAT or GRE scores. I took both exams, and I don't know if it is more convenient to send either GMAT or GRE scores or both. Any suggestions?? My scores: GMAT: Q: 49 (91%) V: 41 (93%) Total: 740 (98%) GRE: Q: 800 (94%) V: 590 (82%) Waiting for the AWAs...

  7. CNN News Probe finds GRE answers posted on Web August 8, 2002 Posted: 1:23 PM EDT (1723 GMT) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRINCETON, New Jersey (AP) -- Computer-based versions of the Graduate Record Examination will be suspended in four Asian countries after a yearlong investigation uncovered Asian-language Web sites with answers to the test. Current and past questions from the graduate admissions exam were illegally obtained by test takers and displayed on Web sites based in China and Korea, according to the Educational Testing Service, which administers the test. The investigation found that the average verbal scores in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea had risen significantly. Test officials attribute the rise to the Web sites, which were written in Chinese and Korean. "We looked at score changes in 40 countries and noticed a significant rise in only these countries," said Carole A. Beere, the chairwoman of the GRE board. Only the paper version of the GRE General Test will be available in the four countries on the next two testing dates: November 23, 2002, and March 15, 2003. The change is expected to affect more than 55,000 students each year. ETS would not reveal when the answers were posted on the Internet nor when it noticed scores increasing. "Every year we'd get someone from China who had high verbal scores on the GRE then had little or no knowledge of English when he got to the classroom," added Howard Lijestrand, graduate adviser at the University of Texas. Bob Schaeffer of Fair Test, which monitors standardized testing, is pleased the computer version of test will be suspended in the four countries. But he said it is only a matter of time before U.S. applicants find out about the Web sites. The GRE is taken annually by more than 400,000 applicants to graduate programs in the arts, humanities, sciences and engineering. Copyright 2002 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 8. 51. “The presence of a competitor is always beneficial to a company. Competition forces a company to change itself in ways that improve its practices.” Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading. Answer: In my opinion, competition is not really beneficial to a firm. One usually tends to think that the presence of a competitor will be good for the company, but the contrary is true. As I will show in this essay, economic theory and professors of strategy only state that the company should avoid competition to achieve success. First of all, the presence of a competitor leads to an interminable war. The consequence of this war is only less profits for the company. This has been well demonstrated by economic theory. However, the truth is that the presence of a competitor is beneficial for the consumer, who will receive a better product for less money. Another important thing to recall is what all strategy professors teach: For a company to succeed it must achieve an "unfair advantage", or a competitive advantage that is sustainable over time. The best scenario is when you have a core competence that allows you to be a monopoly for a period of time, so the firm can make more profits. I have also read that innovation doesn't spark when there is a lot of competition. This is because the company will only focus in matching his competitor, becoming more concerned with little improvements than with generating an important innovative breakthrough. Competitors always enter in a never-ending war where they are only concentrated with winning than with making profits. On the other hand, I think that competition stimulates a company to improve its practices. In other words, its presence should be correlated with more efficiency. However, I think that the company will do the same thing better, and we will only have sustaining improvements not disruptive ones. In conclusion, I have shown that the presence of a competitor is not good for any company. The most important objective of any company is to make profits, and competition will certainly not contribute to reach this goal. Notwithstanding, I agree that competition leads to improvement of practices, but I don't think that this mean that your stockholders will achieve a better return over their investment (probably the opposite is true).
  9. 25. The following appeared as part of an article in a magazine on lifestyles. “Two years ago, City L was listed 14th in an annual survey that ranks cities according to the quality of life that can be enjoyed by those living in them. This information will enable people who are moving to the state in which City L is located to confidently identify one place, at least, where schools are good, housing is affordable, people are friendly, the environment is safe, and the arts flourish.” Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion. Essay: The argument stated above is seriously flawed. The journalist is assuming a lot of things that are not obvious for the reader and subject to discussion. First of all, the argument doesn't say anything about the total number of cities that were surveyed. For example, if the number of cities surveyed were 15, the quality of life in City L would be very near the worst place. On the other hand, if the number of cities surveyed were 200, City L would be among the cities with better quality of life. Another important evidence that would strengthen the argument is to provide information about the kind of cities involved in the survey. For instance, the conclusion would be very different if all the cities surveyed were cities of developing countries. On the contrary, the conclusion would sound more adequate if the cities surveyed belonged only to developed countries. Also, the argument would be more logically sound if the journalist gives information about how the ranking was constructed. For example, which types of measures were used (quality of schools, industry development, etc.). This is because we don't know if a good ranking imply that the city has good schools, affordable housing, friendly people, safe environment, and flourish arts. Finally, it would be very useful to give, in addition to the ranking, a score based on points. This would allow the readers to have an idea of the absolute (rather than relative) quality of life in City L. For instance, if the maximum score possible were 100 points, and City L got 40, we would think that the quality of life is not so good as the conclusion imply (even if the total number of cities involved in the surveyed was large). In conclusion, a lot of additional information is needed to strengthen the argument. As I have stated above, it is essential to give more information about the methodology used to build the ranking, the characteristics of the sample used, the year of the survey (it could be outdated), etc.
  10. My Final Score in the TOEFL: List: 28 Struc: 28 (initial range 13-29) Read: 30 Essay: 5.5 Total: 287 I am very happy with it! Now I am going to focus on the GRE and GMAT. One doubt I have is whether I should wait for the new GRE format (october) or not. Any suggestions having in mind my essay TOEFL score?
  11. What was your initial structure/writing score range?
  12. Friends. I think that the caclulation of the final score in the structure/writing part is a little more complicated than only doing linear interpolations. I think that is more related with percentiles and things like that. Let's wait for my final score and we will see.:)
  13. I have just taken the toefl. I socred: Listening:28 Structure/Writing 13-29 Reading: 30 Range: 237-290 I want to know the final structure/writing score I would obtain if I score 5 in the essay; if I score 5,5 in the essay or if I Score 6 in the essay. Do you have any ideas?? Edited by - solo on 2002 Jul 10 06:52:37
