  1. If you haven't received your official score report, you can call ETS at 1-866-473-4373 as early as 8 am US eastern time on weekdays only. Then i think I pressed 8 to speak to the operator and asked them for the registration number. Actually they can give the registration number after you register for the test. I got my second registeration number when I called them even before I take the second test. But after you have the number, you may not be able to check your report. I think it takes about 10 business days until your report is in the online system. There's no fee, but if you call from other countries outside the US, you may have to pay for international call. Good luck PS there is also some minor details about how to log in in order to review the report. please refer to this tread; http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gre/89480-gre-1160-q740-v420-2.html
  2. Jive, I couldn't agree more. I think PowerPrep may be quite outdated. After I saw the first diagnostic report, I really hate CAT. After Early RC hit me hard, I got some question level 4 or 5 right, but it didn't help to pull my score up. Good luck to you for the second GRE. Tamsel, you're welcome. I hope people who are planning to take GRE can learn something from my experience. Good luck to you.
  3. Tamsel, in the second GRE test, the order of my incorrect answers are; (Verbal 650) 5th: SC (level4) 8th: analogy (level5) 12th: RC (level 3) 15th: antonym (level 4) 17th-18th-19th: RC (level 5-4-3 respectively) 21th: RC (level3) 24th: SC (level 2) 30th: analogy (level5) My first GRE test, the order of incorrect answers are; (Verbal 420) 1st: SC (level2) 5th-6th: RC (level 2 and 3 respectively) 9th: analogy (level 2) 10th: RC (level2) 12th: RC level2) 16th: SC (level2) 25th: SC (level 2) After comparing the first and the second tests, If I had not got early RC, I would have much more better chance to score in 600-700 range in the first test. Jive, I guess early RC may be the ETS's trick to make people take the tests couple of times. How many people feel RC is a piece of cake? Probably much less than those who think RC is a monster. So ETS put early RC out, a lot more people got hit by it, then more people want to take the test two times or more (in case they are unlucky to get early RC again). It's just my conspiracy theory, though. I think if you get RC after the 10th question, you may have a good shot for 700ish range as you had early RC and still got 670!
  4. Jive, I don't know why I had early RC in the first GRE test. I still have no idea how the order of questions works out. I just guess it's all about luck. I got 3 on AWA on the first test and I don't care anymore if I got 2 on the second test because I'm really so sick of this test. tamsel, I did write something about my first diagnostic test in my first thread as following.
  5. Mick, I did get an experiment section. I think it was the second verbal section.
  6. I got both April and May registration numbers in late April when I wanted to check my first test diagnostic service. It only takes me 9-10 days until my second test report is in the system. So I guess if you guys wanna check it before you receive the official score, you can call the ETS and ask for the number. Verbal: 1st-10th question: 8 correct, 2 incorrect (1SC and 1 Analogy, difficulty level 4 and 5 respectively) Overall: 21 correct, 9 incorrect--> 2 SC (level 4 and 2), 2 Analogy (level 4 and 5), 1 Antonym (level 4) and 5 RC (level 3, 4 and 5) (I got RC at 11th-12th, 17th-21th. Total is 8 questions and I got 5 wrong) Quantitative: 1st-10th question: 1 incorrect (at the 2nd question!) 11th-20th question: 3 incorrect 21th-30th question: 2 incorrect So I DO believe that my second test score is better than the first time because; 1. I didn't get RC in the first 10th questions (RC is my weak area) 2. In Quantitative, I didn't answer incorrectly 3 or 4 question in a row like in the first test. I got the 2nd question wrong, but i got a bunch of questions correct afterward. So I hope my experience will help you guys plan your strategy in GRE a little bit. Good luck!
  7. lifeisgood, before I took the first GRE, I had quite high expectation in myself that I would be able to get 550-600 in verbal. The first score was like a slap on my face and I was so discourage. I went to the second test with no expectation at all. Good luck with your second try.
  8. I memorized Barron's Master Word List, not just the high frequency list. I don't know about Kaplan as I never use it. When I memorized only 50% of Barron's Master Word List, I only got 390 in PowerPrep. So I don't know how it will work out for you for using the combined high frequency word lists. I guess you can evaluate your vocab strength by taking PP and see how it goes. But in my opinion, I would just memorized as many words as I could, esp. in Barron.
  9. I also scored 420 in Verbal at my first time, but was able to go up to 650 at my 2nd try (2 weeks apart). I think Barron's list is sufficient for 600 score range. If you know that you memorize most words in Barron, and got below 500, you can consider to retake it. From my experience, the order of questions play an important role as well. RC is my weakest link, but the first time I got 2 RC's in the first 10 question. It kicked me down to 400. Anyway, you will need to be sure that you master at Antonym and Analogy, too. Just my 2 cents.
  10. Oldman, I don't think I learned significant knowledge during the time between the 1st and 2nd test, but I earned huge difference between those scores. Everything stayed the same, only the order of the questions that changed. Maybe this is a trick from ETS to make people take GRE couple of times? I doubt it. At my first test, I felt that I was comfortable with most of the questions beside RC. RC gave me a very difficult time because I was pretty hesitant to make choices. It always came down to 2 choices after POE. I think the second test's score was just also about luck. I still feel pretty unfair that at the first test, I answered 18 out of 20 last questions right, but it didn't help to pull my score up at all. I just don't like the way CAT operates, but nothing I can do, just have to accept it. I agree with you that it's all about first 10 questions. It sounds so scary, either you make it or lose it. I am very glad it is finally over.
  11. Finally!!!!!! I took my first GRE 2 weeks ago. Here is my first thread http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gre/89480-gre-1160-q740-v420.html First time I got 740Q and 420V and was very upset with verbal score. I just got my first test's official score yesterday. It even upset me more because I was able to got a big bunch of question right, but my Verbal score was just 420. Last night, I was so dejected. I think I would just rest the second test on luck. AWA : I did it quite bad because I couldn't think of enough supporting ideas for Issue writing. Oh well...even if I will get 2 on AWA, I don't care anymore. Verbal: After the break, I just prayed and prayed and hope that I would have some luck this time. I prayed for not to get RC in the first 10 questions. It seemed like it was my day. RC came at 11th question (short RC) and long RC came at around 15th question. Last short RC came at 25th or so. This time, I was EXTREMELY careful with the first 10 questions (lesson learned!). I was confident with Analogy and Antonym and paid very close attention with SC (last time I only got half of SC's right). I paced myself quite well and finished the last question on time. Quant: I learned from the diagnostic service that I spent to much time (3-4 minutes) on 4 questions and I ran out of time in the end (7 or 8 minutes left for 10 questions). This time, when I couldn't find any answers in 40 seconds, I just guessed and move on to the next question. Anyway, I still ran out of time when the last question came, but I have enough time (5 seconds) to make sure that I marked the answer. Verbal 2: I got another Verbal part at after the math section. At first I was not sure which one was real and which was the research section. There were more words that were not in Barron's list in 4-5 Analogy and Antonym questions. I recognized that they were in Nova's. I also did not got any RC in the first 10 questions. I realized that this Verbal section was research because the last short RC (came at 25th-28th question) was too short, just 15 lines and it had one hight light in one word (like in TOEFL iBT exam) when that word was asked. I never see this highlight before, and I think ETS said they will or do put this feature after November 2007. Correct me if I am wrong. So what did I study differently? nothing really. I just went over NOVA's word list once and memorized few new words vaguely. I recognized some of them in the second Verbal sections, but couldn't think of the meaning. So at the end of the day, I got 770Q and 650V. I am VERY glad this ordeal is finally over. My goal was to get 750 in Math and 550 in Verbal and finally I did it. I hate this test more than any tests I took in my life and I do hate CAT. Now I can move on to improve other parts of the grad school application. One thing I learned from this 140$ lesson. If your real score was VERY strange from your performance on Bigbook or Powerprep. Don't be scared to retake the test. It might happen that it was just not your day. I always got 550-650 in PowerPrep's and BigBook's verbal sections, thus 420 in my first real test was VERY odd to me. Also, I believe that you've gotta got some luck (besides hard work) to get good score. Good luck to you all.
  12. I took TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), my score was 28 out of 30. So I thought I was quite good in reading. But GRE's RC questions are trickier. My scores on RC lacks consistency as well. In BigBook, there are 11 questions in RC, my average score is 7 out of 11. Some time I only got 3-4 right, sometime I got 10 right. Oldman, I had a friend got RC as early as the 3rd question. Mick, I kind of give up on verbal, I think I'll just rest it on luck or whatever it is. I may just spend my time on math for now. Verbal: Total RC: 8, correct 4, incorrect 4 Total SC: 6, correct 3, incorrect 3 Total Analogy: 6, correct 5, incorrect 1 Total Antonym: 10, correct 10, incorrect 0 First 15 questions; 9 correct, 6 incorrect Overall 23 correct, 7 incorrect. Math I got killed in word problems and problem-solving strategies, too. First 15 questions, I got 4 wrong. I also saw that I spent 3-4 minutes on couple questions and I only got half of them right. I will make sure that I won't spend that much time on some questions again, especially the last 15 questions.
  13. By the way, One of the representatives I spoke said the diagnostic service usually has your report 10-15 business days after your test. In my case, It only took 10 or 11 business days. I have my May registration number, so I will try next time how early this report will be in the diagnostic service system. Yep, I had really bad penalty for getting 5 of 10 first questions wrong, though they were just level 2 or 3 difficulty. It was ironic that I got harder questions right, but they just came later. Thinking that I did quite well on powerprep's and BigBook's Verbal, I really wanna cry. I really have no idea what to do to improve for the next test.
