  1. Hi All, It would be great if you please advice me on housing in Irvine. I have got the graduate housing, but its expensive at $900 for sharing a two bedroom flat. Please let me know of the rates around the university. I am looking for a private room for myself. Also, it would be great if you please give some links to find a room Cheers!
  2. Hi hlimethe3rd, Thanks for your comments! From my experience of using SAS for many years, I guess i can say the following, with all due respect to you; I am not aware of how well STATA gives graphs (used it only for 6 months), but SAS graph is simply amazing. One can create amazing graphs in that and you have the flexibilty of creating graphs in an interactive mode i.e. if you want to change a bar graph to a pie chart , you can simply do that by right click on the diagram and choosing an option. As far as survey is concerned, one has the following important procedures PROC SURVEYFREQ, PROC SURVEYSELECT, PROC SURVEYLOGISTICS, PROC SURVEYMEANS AND PROC SURVEYREG. I am yet to fully explore the efficiency of all this procedures, but these are simply excellent.
  3. Thanks for all information. With due respect to all of you, here's my thought. SAS rules over all the softwares, be it STATA, EVIEWS or SPSS. Some of the measure to check are follows 1. One important measure to judge a software is how well it uses DATE & Time functions. SAS is excellent in handling this. 2. How good is the support and documentation. The documentation and support that SAS gives is unparalelled. We can find excellent SUGI papers that can help us in doing the most complicated macros. 3. It is simply amazing in handling econometric & time series modelling 4. A key feature of SAS is that virtually every statement or operation will be part of one of just two types: a DATA routine or a PROC routine. The DATA routines open, close, create, merge and manipulate datasets. The PROC routines perform pre-written procedures and operations on existing datasets. 5. With SAS, at any one time only one observation is 'in memory' while in the case of Stata, the entire dataset is in memory and can be accessed at any time. This is why memory requirements and constraints in Stata can be quite binding. It is also the reason you need to pre-specify memory requirements in Stata before running a large-memory program (and you need to modify these specifications for different datasets). SAS does have memory specification requirements, but typically only for very special jobs. 6.One important reason why many people is do not use SAS, is because SAS is very expensive. One license of PC SAS comes at a whopping $ 13000 per year. As far as EG SAS is concerned, it is relatively much cheaper, but then one needs to be connected to the server (office or university) for using it. It also pretty slow. However, EG SAS scores over PC SAS in one aspect, it can handle millions of data. 7. Finally, almost all the corporates (including research wings like HP labs) uses SAS. Hope thsi helps friends!
  4. Hi all, Do anyone has any idea about the placements at California Irvine? How good or bad is it? Also, what are the options that are open to first year PhD students for summer job? Request you to please give your views. Thanks a Ton!
  5. Placements:UC Irvine Do anyone has any idea about the placemensts at UC Irvine? Also, what are options that can be explored for a summer job? How tough it is to get a good summer job? Would really appreciate your responses, even mean ones.
  6. I would also go with UCR. I also got an offer with Dean's Fellowship Award but declined. How will one survive with such a low scholarship value?
  7. Hi, We also see an offer in many cases where you get a summer stipend. Do one has to work for this in return or this is just given to support yourself throughout the summer?
  8. Do anyone have any idea how many funded offers was given by BU. Also, how long is the funding waiting list?
  9. Are there no other person, who has received an offer from Boston? Also, please indicate your preference, whether you are going to Boston or some other place. Thanks Doubtful!
  10. Can we have all those who have received a Boston offer in this thread?
  11. Rochester is definitely one step ahead compared to BU or UT. I have heard that Rochester has received a huge fund recently and hence can expect that they would hire a few faculties in teh coming months. Would suggest you Rochester..definitely!
  12. point noted fp3690! Thanks for letting me know. Till now I was wondering why TM'ers were frustrated about my writing, even when there were no spelling mistakes. Got It this time! Thanks dude
  13. I would go for Wisconsin -Madison....its really good...Economics is full of Maths, so there is no escape and its always good to be mathematically sound..harder is a relative term, someone else's perception..you may really enjoy it there at Wisconsin..wisconsin is really known for its diversity & interdisciplinary work..facilities are good..placements are relatively good..normally at IMF, LSE, Korean Schools, Fedearl reserve bank and Univ of California..good place overall....i would go for Madison.....Best of Luck
  14. Even I have not heard anything...probably all in the waitlist....PSU has given offers to really good people..and they are mostly (few of them I know) going to Princeton, NYU..etc...So i guess they have a long waiting list....fingers crossed ...All the Best!
  15. The fact that you have got funding at Cornell should be enough for you to be there (my opinion with all due reespect to yours). Besides, I had a long conversation with Kaushik Basu in December'07 at DSE, regarding this course. Its good and you many classes are held in common for the mainstream and applied class. So in terms of education you shall not be behind, the only thing is that you will be specialising in a narrower field. But then you have to a write thesis on a particular topic. However, as mentioned in your passage broader options and job markets..you got to decide...but then you have funding...cornell placement should not be bad..or very far as compared to BU.....you got to choose yourself.. Hope this information helps... :)
  16. @ Pevdoki & Mr. Keen I agree with you that I was rude...but isnt it carelessness and showing irresponsibility to make comments without reading the thread properly... and moreover..please note ..that I started my message with.."Please forgive me.." your thoughts
  17. @ Dev If you have some bucks spend it on LSE or take some credit to go to LSE..its worth it....One of my friends last year went to LSE (got himself funded from Asian Development Bank) even though he had full funding from US top ranked universities..its not about US & Europe ..its about the legacy of LSE....who would not want to go to harvard or princeton......i agree with you...on the faculty aspect...but do not hesitate to spend some money (LSE have aslo started giving scholarship...contact your professor if they can help you getting that)...u will be carrying the brand name through out your life...
  18. Please forgive me ...i meant minnesota...getting old..u know
  19. rochester is definitely the answer...unitil u fancy the locatuon of boston due to its proximity to harvard...yes..rochester may be loosing rite now...but dont forget rochester has recieved a huge grant few months back and would definitely pull up their socks to be where they were.....so good luck..i know its always tough to decide in these cases...
  20. PSU is known for micro and theory works...maryland is far better...as far as finance & macroeconomics is concerned......beside..the exposure at college park is much wider as compared to PSU.......
  21. Southern california may be marginally betteroverall.....also have heard from ffriends at USC...that its pretty good there...boston..has a great location..near to harvard..same city..but some students run teh risk of going unfunded second year....its a sti9ngy school...so u can weigh your options...but head to head as far dept. is concerned..boston is better...
  22. I got the offer around 10th of february'08......social science merit award.....also was informed from UCR...that they are considering for full fellowship for 5 years..... but ahvent got an offer from east coast...where my heart lies.... :(
  23. I have got a full funding at UCI. Was thinking, is it worth to go UCI for a PHD. Request you to please give your feedback> Thanks a Ton!
