  1. Hi, Gaea. If you're looking for something on northeast you mayu try UMass Amherst (Massachusetts). If I'm not mistaking they have pretty good CS department (ranked 25+ or something like that). And it is very nice area to live in. Good luck.
  2. hello, everybody. I very much agree with nonevent99 about lack of test preparation material. That ridiculous brochure is misleading and especialy harmful for those whos major was not CS. They definetelly could achieve better scores if practice material would be any closer to a real test. It would help to better diversify our limited preparation time. Anyway, for those who is going to take GRE CS next year this address may help alittle (I did post it ones before but it's difficult to find it now, I guess).: http://abbott.calstatela.edu/courses/CS490/GRE/ (click on .html files) About the live-testing questions - I don't think it's too bad to do it. Cheap and efficient :o) way. But I do think it should be announces and 10 min. or so sould be added to the testing time. Anyway, guys, Life is very unfair in general. Maybe it's first buy surely not the last time when all your efford will not bring you anything near to what you hope for. You better learn how to get right back on a horse if you had been thrown on a ground. You may lose a little if you let yourself to be thrown. You'll loose a race if you'll go off the track and try to prove that ground was more slippery than it sould. So was for everybody else. You all young and tallented. Just remember your primary goal. Do not spread around. If you suddenly desided to dedicate your life to the purpose of making testings perfect so go ahead, fight ETS and make the difference 5 or 10 years from now but if you still want to be a CS, pay your duty if you feel like this and report your concerns but forget it all right after that and FOCUS ON YOUR PRIMARY GOAL. Guys, apply everywhere you want. Noone knows final output. You may or may not get there today. But if you didn't get through the door, go through the window then. Keep focused and GO. We have kind of funny lyric (in my language) which can be generally translated like: Life is fool of little surprises Good and evil are living there side by side. If your bride run away to some ther guy It is a good question Who got lucky after all. Do your best, apply. And remember, if you will not get excepted somewhere maybe you should not be there at first place. Some universites without fansy names may just wait for someone like you to raise there rating over Berkeley. Good luck to you all.
  3. Hey, I like your approach ! I'll think about it ! Any more ideas, anyone ?
  4. Hello Erin and everybody. It will be too bad if this forum will freeze now again like it did after Nov.8th until next year CS test session. I was thinking maybe we can discuss some some subjects just to exercise our gray cells. Some of us may need help with particular CS questions for there present bachelor or master study. Some may use it to improve there English (:o) especially in particular area, some may just like to keep in touch with new friends. Anyway, as a bait, I'm offering question I came up with couple of days ago. Sorry, if anyone saw it before somewhere else. I don't think nobody before me thought of this one but I never saw it myself anywhere so I can't quote. Have fun. :p I think we can say any number is a result of arithmetic operation on one or more other numbers or/and itself. Now: 1. Sum even + even = even odd + even = odd odd + odd = even 2. Differ. even - even = even odd - even = odd odd - odd = even 3. Multipl. and Div. is a result of multiple repeated two first basic procedures. So, how comes we have 2:1 ratio of operations which create even numbers to those give us odd ones but we have equal number of odd and even numbers ? Erin, if you like the idea, you're welcome to correct my English. It'll make it easier for everybody to read.
  5. I would be happy to hear some oppinions on my version. Thanks. ---------------- To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. I don’t have an opinion on this subject just yet but to reach one I think we have to answer step by step on a few questions. First one, what is it ethical and moral standards ? Second one, what it actually mean to be an effective leader ? And the last one, what is the role of a public official in a society ? I think we can define ethical and moral standards as a guidelines for an ethical and moral behavior. And in it’s turn, ethical and moral behavior of a person (or a group) can be defined as a such a way of interaction with a society which is the least disturbing, or better, pleasing to the other members of a society. Now, what is it “an effective leader” ? I think in our society we can call person “an effective leader” if he was able to gain respect of people around him and there loyalty. But why do people grant there loyalty To anyone ? Because most people like to feel then somebody else think wider, see farther and move faster and knows answers on a questions they don’t. It makes them feel protected and comforted by a power they do not possess. And I think now we’re down to the root of the question. To be an effective leader person has to possess or make the others to believe he possess a power over there fears, problems or needs. And unfortunately this definition we came up with does not include any remainder of moral and ethics. And finally, to the point of a public official. Role of a public official either elected or an appointed one is to represent a larger then himself unit of a society and it’s power. Therefore, his personality does not invest as much in his leadership as the power of the organization he represents. And as long as his ethical and moral standards are high enough to keep the job and his skills are sufficient to care out his duty, actual height of his moral and ethical standards will not be justified. At the end I want to offer very recent illustration to the conclusion I just reached. Catholic church is experiencing a very difficult times now because some of it’s representatives had bend the very base of the rules it exists on. Well, only a few representatives were removed And the rest continue to perform there tasks. Organization itself lost number of it’s followers and some of it’s power but now it is gaining respect, loyalty and a power among ‘till recently outcast part of out society. Finalizing everything I've said, I have to disagree with the original statement. It appears to be not necessary for a public official to maintain HIGHEST ethical and moral standards if he wants to be an effective leader. He just have to be able to sufficiently deliver power of organization he represents to the people he suppose to lead.
  6. I would like to understand what to expect. There is ETS official announcement now all essays has to be word processed. But what does it mean exactly ? Is it something like MicrosoftWord ? Can we CUT and PASTE ? Any other luxuries ? Anyone who did it before could you please describe the process ? Thanks.
  7. Hello everybody. I was watching this discussion for a while... My personal experience is not important but maybe it will make some sense to try to clear out couple of questions. My observations tells me there is some kind of inconsistency with performance some of members of forum On the Forum and on exam. (For example, I definitely wouldn’t expect Wood to be among disappointed ones). Anyway, it looks a lot to me like we all are talking about different GRE (even if they all CS). I think it’s what that little table on p.7 “practice book” mean, presenting different output for 3 forms (A, B and C). /I'm just guessing. If somebody knows for sure, I would appreciate some info./ It definitely would explain difference of opinions and how nonevent got his 800 with only 43 or so right answers. I personally didn’t pay any attention to this little table and now waiting for the score I feel Sorry I didn’t because somewhere on that booklet there was I think something which would give me an idea was it A, B or C. :shy: Anyway, I found this link while ago and I don’t remember seeing it on the Forum but if I’ll have to take GRE CS again I’ll use this PRACTICE QUESTIONS in my study. I like there style better.:cool: (Wood, I hope you won’t need it). Good Luck, everybody. http://abbott.calstatela.edu/courses/CS490/GRE/
  8. For the best of my understanding shape can be not much alike but in simple words every vertex of n-degree which is connected to I vertices of m-degree, j vertices of k-degree and l vertices of p-degree has to have exact image of itself with exactly the same number of connections to the same degree vertices. And this mapping has to be "one-to-one" and "onto" (every vertex is mapped, none is mapped more then ones).
  9. This book had been highly evaluated by the members of this forum so I decided to buy one. On first and second.com there were two books of a slightly different description by the same author. In a hurry I bought them both. They came just now and they're 100% identical. I'm willing to sell one. I paid just over $38 for two (+shipping to USA). If anyone want it for $20 I'll ship it tomorrow "priority mail". I can only except payment by check or money order (I don't have any kind of e-payment options). If you live close enough to Boston, MA to pick it up, I can accept cash :o) Anyway,I can’t tell anything about this book. Didn't have time to open it yet. To speed up the process e-mail me to marina@perlstar.com
  10. Maybe not everybody know yet: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/087891434X/ref=pd_sxp_f/102-4738069-7325756?v=glance&s=books#product-details http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2373359&sourceid=1500000000000000034760
  11. #2. Let's say z:=5 z:= 5 ( >0) x := 1*y z:=5-1 = 4 z:=4 ( >0) x ..> 1*y*y z:=4-1 = 3 z:=3 ( >0) x ..> 1*y*y*y z:=3-1 = 2 z:=2 ( >0) x ..> 1*y*y*y*y z:=2-1 = 1 z:=1 ( >0) x ..> 1*y*y*y*y*y z:=1-1 = 0 z:=0 not >0 OUT x = y^z (not x^y)
  12. For swapping 1. has to have x:= x + y y:= x - y x:= x - x
